Ottawa on the Fediverse:

Ottawa chatrooms:

Please note the following:

* All chatrooms are linked together. If you join one room your messages will be copied to the other platforms.

* Matrix is an open source and potentially distributed chat protocol. The matrix room listed is hosted on matrix.org, a somewhat centralized hub for a lot of currently public rooms. Though the protocol itself is free, libre and open source, the deployment of the protocol resembles a centralized service. This may be fixed in the future with the deployment of independent servers.

* Be aware that both Telegram and Discord are centralized proprietary platforms and do not necessarily protect your rights nor privacy while simultaneously giving power to corporations.

So I recently followed a short rabbit hole to something that seems worth sharing. There's a small group of artists/DIYers in Ottawa who participate in something called the Third Culture Collective. Looks like there's some local bands involved (moridori is one that was on my radar), and some rumbles that more is coming re: the site.

Found it by way of a homemade sticker for one of the members at a small business I frequent here. Seems neat, open to aligned participants and of possible interest to Fediverse loving locals. Who knows - maybe this is just the kind of thing someone reading this is looking for!

Reading this makes me think of scenes from 'Demolition Man'; particularly the scenes where the computer detected a MDK and also dispatched police to apprehend the perp. (https://youtu.be/dlyMZNURdmc) Is this where we are heading as a city?

"Uh OC Transp-AI, how do I approach someone to ask them to see their PoP?"

Changes are coming to how blue and black bins are collected across the province. Under regulations from the Government of Ontario (link is external), responsibility for collecting and processing recycling across Ontario will transfer to producers of paper and packaging. This means that Ontarians will be able to recycle the same materials no matter where they live.

What this will mean for curbside recycling collection in Ottawa:

  • Continue to put your bins out by 7 am on your collection day. They will be collected by a different truck and collection may occur at a different time of day than usual.
  • There will be minor changes to what can go in your blue and black bins as of January 1, 2026. A full list of items that can be recycled is available on the Circular Materials website(link is external). The City will provide more details in the coming weeks.
  • You can continue to use your existing standard sized blue and black bins.
  • Beginning on Thursday, January 1, 2026, you will no longer contact the City for any recycling-related services such as a broken bin or a missed collection.

More details will be provided in the coming weeks on who residents can contact for recycling collection services in 2026.

Just curious on what everyone will be carving and putting out. I unfortunately can't contribute to my own post as I haven't done a pumpkin in a few years, but I'd love to see what everyone is thinking about carving up :)

Just went for a walk with my doggo. The colours are amazing, the leaf crunch is there. Many people are out and about at the dog parks, parking lots are almost full.

What's holding you back from getting the family out for an hour long walk? it's great for your legs, back and lungs and keeps any pets tired so you can enjoy the rest of your day even more?

Hope you had a great weekend whatever your original plans were.

Stay safe and happy Ottawa!

Just checking in with others, making sure everyone's good and happy, or if anyone needs any help with anything.

Rewiring myself to be more outgoing, and accepting of everyone so why not start with Ottawa.

My Fairphone 4's USB port is broken and I'm looking for a replacement. Looking for Ottawa Fairphone users to either buy USB ports in bulk or to buy the USB ports from.

Thank you in advance.

I grew up in toronto when active surplus was still kickin' and you could browse for hours, just soaking it all in and getting inspired.

I have a few projects in mind. Mostly things I want to do with electromechanical controls for around the house and I'd love to find a place in eastern ontario that is similar. I know for mechanical components some of the flea markets are a good place to go, but what about electronics? Does such a magical place exist???

I know about pi shop which has some of the things I am looking for but I'd love a brick and mortar junk shop to wander.

Posting in Ottawa because it seems like the best bet, but I'm not specifically looking for Ottawa. Anywhere 613 would be great.

I was down at Parliament Hill today, and I saw a drone loitering over the cenotaph. It was clearly a police drone because it had little blue and red lights flashing on the underside. Later I saw the thing head over to the Chateau, get a fresh battery, before resuming its position.

Sadly, it didn't seem to have a little RCMP hat or serge. Nor did it make "weeooo weeooo" noises.
