although I am using lemmy almost exclusively , I am using geddit at times for reading reddits , It is a good app that does not use reddit api !

In the past week and a half, I've noticed Reddit behaviors starting to try and poison all of the places that people are taking refuge in to get away from the toxicity, myself included. They've started to DDoS Lemmy for a while, which is a Reddit thing to do and what they're notorious of doing whenever they feel they don't like something.

And now they've been trickling in numbers, these incredibly toxic users that behave as they would on Reddit. The reckless shitposting, derailing open civil discussions with unfunny and irrelevant jokes. The downvote brigading and banding together to get you banned. This exact thing has happened to me on Lemmy, that I had to leave because the toxicity was gradually building.

We should reject Reddit toxicity in general, tell them they don't have a place here or anywhere. They know where they can dump their shit in, but they feel that because they've made mountains of it, that they've got to come over to other places and do it all over again.

I left Reddit because the toxicity levels have gotten unbearable. I really am yearning for a place where I can talk in and not be antagonized. I'm sure others are too.

I hope I don't incur too much flak for this post, but I have been wondering about how reddit profits from its users. I left reddit mobile along with most everyone else when RIF went down, but since then I've still been browsing reddit on desktop with uBlock origin. So they aren't getting ad revenue from me, but I do occasionally make comments. Aside from the principle of still contributing to reddit when I know I shouldn't be, is it possible that doing so still earns revenue for reddit?

I'm pretty sure this is illegal? They have to accept my GDPR request, and they certainly can't block me from reporting that it isn't working, for them to accept it.

do any off the Lemmy or kbin apps provide a way to browse instances other than your own? kind of like filtering for "local" posts but local to another federated instance.

I've subscribed to communities from other instances once I find ones I like. but the only way I can "find" them it's if I see an interesting post when I filter for "all" posts - what some other site might refer to as a post making it to the front page

I guess I could hunt from a web browser to do that, but I'd rather not have to switch between apps to do that

I found a plug-in for Firefox that deletes all posts and comments from your reddit account. (Power Delete Suite). Now I am in talks with reddit, to have them delete my account and data.

They say that all content will be disassociated when I delete my account but I had them confirm that they won't recreate it when I have deleted it. They still say that they will retain the IP used for creating the account. Not sure if this is legitimate data redemption after I have asked for my data to be deleted according to GDPR?

1. /u/howdy@thesimplecorner.org has created a really useful userscript that you can find here: https://thesimplecorner.org/c/lemmytools. We're going to be working together to bring those features into Instance Assistant, so that you can have all the features in one place.

2. Right now there are buttons to explore Lemmy/Kbin communities (with lemmyverse.net), and search across Lemmy sites (with search-lemmy.com). Both of these take you to the respective webpages. Instead, it might be nicer to have a lightweight version right on the Lemmy/Kbin community page (or in the extension popup/sidebar). This should be possible using their APIs/data access, and I have a little working proof of concept already (see GitHub)

I'm new, what is this?

Instance Assistant is a browser extension that started out as a way to quickly jump from one community to the version on your home instance, so that you could subscribe/participate immediately. Since then, a few other features have been implemented:

• Redirect to your home instance:
  • Buttons will be added to the sidebar of any Lemmy or Kbin community you visit, which will let you open the same community on your home instance.

  • Right click context menu will allow you to open any links in your home instance

Did Google help reddit? A short time ago the score for the reddit app was down around 3.2 as everyone gave it 1 star for how bad it was and all the drama going on. I just opened the play store today and the app has a 4.2. Did Google delete or discount some of those reviews?

I'm in the post-ban blackpilled mode right no so please forgive me. I know reddit is falling apart but it isn't happening fast enough. Is there any hope that the whole site will be destroyed? I really just want the whole site / app completely destroyed and thew Vichyite mods unable to have their power trips anymore.

Edit: alright I'm sticking this up here because a number of people seem confused--this post isn't trying to convince you that "fediverse" is a bad term--rather it's a discussion of why I think "threadiverse" is a good umbrella term, for the forum-based part of the fediverse specifically. (lemmy+kbin)

So; we've got something special right here; a federated, thread based forum; but we're still on the forefront right now; most people are still stuck on the old thing; reddit--they'll come in time, but they usually have a hard time getting here--largely because they don't know what "here" is.

Say Lemmy or Kbin, and you've already got problems; you've got to explain all the details of the platform, and how Lemmy and Kbin are really the same thing, etc, etc--too specific--

Say Fediverse, and you've got the opposite problem; too broad and vague, such that nobody will know what you're talking about unless you unload a whole pile of overwhelming details--we need a term that talks about only this segment of the Fediverse; the thread based forum portion--just as the World Wide Web could only really catch on once terms like, "internet" or "web" became widespread, the federated alternative to Reddit will only catch on once it has a name too--it's a branding game.

Thus, if we want to beat Reddit at branding, we need a better name than them--In my opinon, "Threadiverse" is the best name for the job, for reasons I'll lay out below:

First off; any good name communicates a lot of information--like how "Reddit" contains both "Read+it" and Red, the colour associated with their brand--it's made up of those three parts, plus the company name:

"Reddit"=Read+It+Red+Reddit

We, however, don't have a company, and are thus not bound by a need for that kind of recognizeability--we're looking for a new term; a term like internet; that doesn't need to communicate anything other than what the platform is.

So enter Threadiverse;

Like "Reddit", "Threadiverse" is made up of a number of parts--first, and most obviously to an outside observer you've got thread+universe. Simple, and easy to remember, just like "Reddit" is from Read and it. But we've got more depth too, just like Reddit does; but unlike Reddit, our term has two deeper meanings; first, again, more obvious to an outside observer we have "diverse"--what we want our platform to be: a diverse marketplace of ideas; where reddit has "red" the colour of their brand, a superficial bit of brand information, and representation of their existence as a corporation, we have another descriptor of ourselves--all this is not even to mention "Fediverse", the term we take to get "Threadiverse" in the first place, but that part is not relevant to the outside observer who knows nothing of the platform, its makeup, or its history.

so in short; within that name we've got one more bit of meaning than they do, and, rather than using most of our meanings to communicate superficial brand information, as Reddit does with having their company colour as part of their name; we have "diverse", as our goal is not to be a company, as Reddit's is, but to be diverse marketplace of ideas, and an exchange of useful information.

TL:DR:
"Threadiverse": Thread+Universe+Diverse+Fediverse+Threadiverse
"Reddit": Read+it+Red+Reddit
More info = good; therefore "Threadiverse">"Reddit".

And therefore "Threadiverse" is probably one of the best names our platform can have.

I'm certainly not the first person to use the term "Threadiverse"; but I haven't seen much discussion of why it's the name we ought to be using--and none about why that in particular matters for getting people to understand the platform--hence why I'm making a post about it--a post which I meant to make two weeks ago, but accidentally deleted instead; so here it is now.

I've looked around but haven't found updates on if or where the subreddit migrated.

I searched for instances on Lemmy. There are 4 but they're unmoderated or appear to be moderated by a bot.

The askhistorians.org website still links to the subreddit.

The subreddit itself seems to be open, but the list of moderators is hidden (probably because I deleted my reddit account).

I found some chatter on Discord, but not an actual server.
