I run multiple environments (dev, staging, different projects) in my homelab and I'm tired of DNS management.

Current options suck IMO:

Public DNS → don't want my internal stuff exposed

Tailscale → works but feels like overkill just for DNS, costs add up if I add more users

/etc/hosts → have to edit on every device, breaks constantly

Pi-hole + VPN → too much setup for what should be simple

Local DNS server → works at home but useless when mobile

I just want to type api.dev.project.local and have it work on any device. No VPN setup, no editing hosts files, no exposing stuff publicly.

What's your setup? Is there something simple I'm missing?

I’m currently using MoneyWallet on Android and looking to move to a more powerful setup. Ideally something self-hosted, FOSS, and with these features:

  • Tagging a single expense with multiple tags (e.g. restaurant and gift)
  • Tagging payment method (cash/card) and specific card used, as well as the currency
  • SMS/email parsing for transaction logging, ideally auto-filling card
  • Sync or auto-backup to a directory I can sync via Nextcloud
  • Web interface on PC, mobile app on phone

Anything out there that gets close?

Hey friends, it’s Violet again with some updates on Jellify!

ICYMI - Jellify is a FOSS music player for Jellyfin, available for iOS and Android

We did it!

We’re live in the stores as of this week! Links can be found on our GitHub README, we’re glued to the repository and watching for issues. Our Discord Server is continuing to grow too, if y’all need any help, run into bugs, or just wanna drop by to say hi, we’ll be there! :)

We are still ironing out the experience in the car, and as such, Android Auto is nonexistent and CarPlay is rather crude. Unfortunately I’ve been running into issues with my head unit in my car, and it’s severely limited my ability to test this functionality. That being said, this is our top priority and I am working to get this addressed.

Aside from auto functionality, we’ve also got some other features planned as we enter 2026. We’ve got a roadmap published on our GitHub README and will be included on our upcoming website as well!

Thank you all so much for your support. This has truly been the time of my life, and I’m forever grateful for this amazing community <3

I’ve just shipped tududi v0.87, a self-hosted, open-source task & project manager that combines the simplicity of a personal to-do app with the power of a proper project organizer – while keeping all your data on your own server.

What tududi does:

  • Areas → Projects → Tasks: clear GTD-style hierarchy instead of one giant list.
  • Smart recurring tasks: daily/weekly/monthly, completion-based recurrence.
  • Subtasks & progress: break work down and see progress roll up to the parent.
  • Tags + filters + smart views: slice by context, status, due date, etc., not just “projects”.
  • Notes & markdown for projects/tasks so specs, ideas and links live next to the work.
  • Telegram integration: add tasks and get daily digests straight in chat.
  • Privacy-first & self-hosted: Docker, SQLite, no SaaS, no per-user pricing.

What’s new in v0.87: GitHub

  • Recurring tasks + “Today” view finally behave consistently.
  • New recurring-tasks search view to manage all patterns in one place.
  • Task details UI cleanup, better markdown, and autosave for edits.
  • Notifications + SMTP scaffolding and profile photos.
  • Lots of small UX fixes (mobile menu, metrics button, priority colors, flags, race conditions, etc.).

🔗 GitHub release: https://github.com/chrisvel/tududi/releases/tag/v0.87

🔗 Official website: https://tududi.com/

If you’re running a homelab or just like owning your own tools, I’d be curious how tududi fits into your stack and what’s still missing for you.

Thank you all for your support!

Chris

Hey all 👋

In case you're not already aware, there is a nasty 10.0 React Vulnerability that was published the other day.

At first I didn't think too much about it since we don't use React for our own apps, but then I thought:

Oh crap, what about all the open source projects that we self-host? 😅

I instantly started looking through projects that I knew ran React (like cal.com). I saw they made a commit to bump Next to 15.4.8, but when you look at the latest release notes, its a pretty casual "bump nextjs version". There's no mention of any security update.

I'm not a Javascript expert by any means.

My fear is self-hosters are not being notified of this potential critical impact. Was this not mentioned as a security release because they simply were not affected by it? I might open a discussion on their GitHub for extra clarity.

Do you know of any other popular projects that could be affected?

Because of this uncertainty, it has me worried about other projects. Is any one else aware of our popular self-hosted projects that need to get updated?

Cloudflare deployed WAF rules automatically to help protect their customers, but I am also seeing rumors on X (Twitter) there are alleged proof of concepts that could bypass this.

If we could get a list going of other potential projects to update, this could greatly help other fellow self-hosters. Thanks! ✌️

I have been thinking about getting a VPS but i'm having trouble justifying to myself that it is worth it. I'm planning to set it up with calibre, a password manager, and a google drive replacement. But i doubt that will reach full usage of the server and it feels bad to pay for a bunch of resources that i'm not using.

I then remembered that tor exists, and contributing another node to that network seems like a good thing. So what i'm wondering is if there are any other cool projects i could contribute to with leftover server time?

Bitwarden Lite (was called Unified) is now out of beta.

Anyone switching over to it either from Vaultwarden or regular self hosted Bitwarden?

Hello everyone!

I have been using containers for about a year now and since the moment I started I have tried looking for tools which can start and stop my containers based on web requests, which I did find, but I decided to develop my own as a fun project.

https://github.com/drgshub/spinnerr

This is not my first post here about this, however I just released a more polished update and I'm looking for some feedback if you guys are willing to try. So far, this tool includes:

  • Starting containers based on web requests and stopping them after a defined timeout
  • The ability to group containers so that they can be started and stopped together
  • An web UI to manage the configuration, as well as start/stop services manually

The next feature I'm working on is scheduled power management for the containers and groups.

Let me know what you think!

My gmail account is 20+ years old. I figured I should probably keep a backup of all of these emails in case I ever get locked out for whatever reason. I stumbled upon Bichon which looked like it would do the job. I set it up on my NAS following this guide. Next I needed to figure out how to give access to my GMail account so it can start syncing the emails.

How to setup Gmail with Bichon via IMAP

Once in Bichon, go to the Accounts screen and click the "Add IMAP" button.

https://preview.redd.it/a1ljkz78wg5g1.jpg?width=2880&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a0f3a3b1e1d02891acd80cdfab422bd71483971

Enter your email address in the email field

https://preview.redd.it/qp9bl8hfwg5g1.jpg?width=1874&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef7845815cb13a9a6d275b4e31e0f34d786c68e3

The IMAP host, port, and encryption values should automatically be prefilled. For personal GMail accounts with 2-step authentication you can set the IMAP Auth Method to password.

Go to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords to generate an app password. Copy the password and paste it into the IMAP Password field in Bichon.

Set your sync preferences as desired

https://preview.redd.it/4m0763emxg5g1.jpg?width=1874&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f51d4dbe62e94d42928aab7f432f53f100436a2

Review your changes on the last screen and click "Submit" to save your changes.

You should now see your GMail account listed in the Account tab. Now we need to setup which folders should be synced. Click the three dots all the way to the right of your account.

https://preview.redd.it/3mro8e6ayg5g1.jpg?width=1282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad23cf3b652865740bd556d1b97c18f36dda42b6

Click "Sync Folders" and select which folders you want to sync. I selected INBOX and the default GMail folders of All Mail, Chats, Drafts, Important, Sent Mail, and Starred. Click the Save button.

Now just wait for your mail to sync to Bichon. You can view the status of the sync by clicking "view details" under the State column.

Hope this guide helps you get started backing up your GMail account.

I'm looking for a straightforward way for backing up my VaultWarden docker compose instance. I wanted to backup the necessary for restoring all my data (even if I have to recreate the docker instance). I'm willing to encrypt it and send to proton drive with rclone, so all my data is on the cloud but encrypted.

Has anyone done something similar willing to elucidate me with some ideas?

Thank you

My homelab is stable right now which means my brain is whispering: “What if you redo the whole thing in a more elegant way?”

I know everything is running fine including backups and apps and permissions but the temptation to restructure or containerize differently or switch platforms is very real.

Do you stick with “if it is not broken do not fix it”? Or are you also guilty of breaking perfectly working setups just to rebuild them cleaner?

I've been learning self hosting through trial and error for the most past, as I'm sure most of us do, and am yet to have any formal education. But nevertheless, I've been trying to up my security game.

Ive gone from opening my services directly to the internet with a cloudflare tunnel and no further security measures. To using pangolin on a vps with crowdsec, regularly updating all of my applications, and for once actually configuring firewalls.

All of that to ask, what is the best practice for frequency of updates. In the past I've done them around every 6 months and now about once a month. How often do all of you actually go through and do updates and additionally audit your services?

Im looking to move away from my existing password manager which is bundled with my vpn and self host my own. I have seen various lists of pros & cons of both Vaultwarden and Bitwarden. It seems to break down to one is still own by a company, but there is open source and more open to malicious code.

Can anyone give me some pros and cons, feedback etc on the real word useage of both? I intend to host it in my homelab and access via my reverse proxy.

So far all I've been doing is using tailscale and memorizing port numbers and accepting the fact that I can't use apps that need https

Also no PWAs

I know that there are ways to get around it, but I've tried a bunch of different methods and I couldn't get it to work (most likely a skill issue on my part)

But I realized 3 things

  1. that I actually have a job now,
  2. that domain names are fairly cheap if you're not picky
  3. my life becomes so much easier if I get one

So I am now the proud owner of a .uk domain name from cloudflare (I don't live in the uk). Time to figure out everything else

most likely still going to be using tailscale though

I recently installed BookLore to host my book collection and was pleasantly surprised by its clean interface and useful features.

Got me curious, what’s your newly released app of the year for 2025 so far? Anything that genuinely surprised you or replaced an app you’d been using for years?

Edit: Here's the BookLore repo: https://github.com/booklore-app/booklore

I started self-hosting a few things mostly to save money, but some of them ended up being straight upgrades over paid tools.

Curious what others are running that they’d genuinely never go back to SaaS for. Could be dashboards, media, analytics, notes, backups, anything.

Bonus points if it’s low-maintenance and hasn’t broken in six months.
