Some dev updates tldr below. I'm happy iRacing is reinvesting its success back into itself so extensively.

  • iRacing is in midseason development mode for Season 4.
  • New track projects include Algarve, Misano, Mugello, Pukekohe, Lédenon, Zandvoort, and Navarra.
  • Short oval racing additions are planned, and the historic version of Zandvoort will be kept.
  • The art department is upgrading existing content.
  • The rain project is making progress.
  • Teams have been expanded for various developments.
  • The sim engine is being overhauled.
  • The UI framework is getting a redesign.
  • The web team is working on improvements.
  • Plans for new sim systems and a Career Mode experience are in place.

Does anyone mainly play iRacing but frequent Assetto Corsa? Do you notice a re-learning curve when you go back to iRacing? Do you perform more poorly in iRacing after racing in AC? Not like im top tier that it would really matter, but im curious how different others feel ac/iRacing are to be playing both comparatively.

Start of the race. I got a good run. T1 is pretty wide open but I know it's going to go 3-wide and so I stick to the inside. But that doesn't matter when the server thinks I'm a bit further to the left than I was. Poor pink car gave up after this.

Hey all! Just had an amazing time jumping back into Assetto Corsa after watching the Belgium GP this weekend. Ran some laps with F1 cars around Spa, and the experience was incredible!

I'm running a couple different RSS and VRC Formula Hybrid F1 car mods.

The highlight was playing with the rain and experiencing the mind-blowing effects provided by CSP (Custom Shaders Patch). The simulated spray from the tires made the race so immersive, I couldn't get enough of it!

I can't wait for iRacing to finish their rain implementation, but for now, I'm more than happy to get my rainy fix in Assetto Corsa. Patience is key, and the experience is totally worth it! Happy racing!

Bonus question: does anyone concentrate mainly on iRacing but still play AC a lot? Curious how much of a relearn it'd take to go back and forth between the two. If it would really affect my performance in iRacing. Not like im told tier so I guess who cares really.

Rain

We were going to make this a wet weather challenge, but wet weather requires paid mods. Please let us know if you're happy for that. We will write up a guide for this if we have a wet challenge.

I play titles like AC, ACC, DR2.0, AMS2, BeamNG.drive, etc. Up until this point my FOV adjustment has been the following procedure:

  • Use an FOV calculator to find my FOV settings for various games, My latest favorite is this one https://dinex86.github.io/FOV-Calculator/
  • Set the FOV in game (particularly annoying for things like DR2.0 but w/e)
  • Start a race or practice session with the virtual wheel and drivers hands displayed
  • Set the virtual seat position so that the IRL wheel hides the virtual wheel and the virtual hands behind what's in real life and the curvature of the wheels match approximately (works for most rally cars, road racing cars have a lot more variation in wheel size so less effective for that but I can get mostly close)
  • Hide the virtual wheel and hands
  • Begin racing

The problem I am facing is that basically all the games listed above save a seat position per vehicle. They are all a bit different, so this makes sense, however this makes it super annoying if I don't drive the same car all the time because I have to go do the whole procedure listed above, except for the FOV part, every time I want to try a new car.

Is there a better way or is this just what everyone does?

That's all really, just excited to have another dirt racing option. Also lots of other updates. It's pretty nice that if you had the 2020-2022 season pass you have access to the new content already.

A Pt2 of the Adrenaline Pack is already in production and will take AMS2 to even higher extremes - owners of the AMS2 2020-2022 Season Pass and of the AMS2 Premium Expansion Packs are secured both parts at no additional charge.

That is all, just putting it out there to see if any other drivers have an opinion

Are sims accurate enough that with a wheel, pedals, and a shifter that I could reach someone how to drive a manual transmission? Obviously we'd finish up in a real car, in the real world, but I was thinking that maybe they'd learn better without the stress of real world consequences, and maybe we'd end up on the other side of training with a lot less transmission damage.

Hey all,

Sorry about the google forum, it's set not to collect any info, but we all know how much info that still means google will grab.

I think that due to the spread of timezones interested we should plan to run the races on the weekend. They'd take ~30-45 minutes (Race length to be decided later) but shouldn't take more than an hour and a half maximum.

Please select any timeslots that you're available for, we'll choose the one that the most people can make.

To join the League you'll need to Search for the "Lemmy iRacing League", currently with id 10017. The correct one will link back to https://lemmy.ml/c/simracing as the website link. Request to join and I'll accept any incoming join requests.

As requested elsewhere, I'll give a little report on how my team fared at this years 24hrs of Spa race on iRacing.

TLDR; We dropped out after 12hrs due to making mistakes.

So a month or so ago I figured it was time for me to do the Spa 24 for the first time. I've done Endurance races before, such as Daytona, Sebring and Suzuka. But all of those happen in colder months, so Spa has been off the table until now due to me moving out of what amounts to an apartment sized oven.

Having wrung some amount of commitment out of 4 other team members. We got going on choosing the car and setup to use. After some back and forth we ended up with the Ferrari f488 GT3 Evo, instead of the BMW M4 GT3 or the Porsche 992 GT.R. We also debated the setup up until the race weekend and ended up on a somewhat playful setup that was more tuned for handling rather than top speed. We just wanted to finish, that was our stated goal. I planned to make a special livery for the occasion but couldn't find time in the end.

Our schedule was dominated by life being in the way. I had work the morning after so I only had the first few hours available, others had kids to attend to etc. We figured we'd have to remix and reconsider on the fly as the race developed.

qualifying, I was the one to do qual and the first stints. I do a 2.19.5, leaving us almost dead last for those who qualified at p46. Had our faster drivers been in the seat we'd probably be midfield instead. Regardless, Endurance races rarely care about starting positions. The race start was oddly clean, I made up 10 or so positions via freebies. I kept creeping forward on consistency and luck alone for most of my first stint before I lost it at Blanchimont. almost catching it but eventually I slammed nose first into the right-side walls. Somehow this only meant 4mins optional repairs and a very slight steering damage, we were still competitive.

A few spins and little moments kept creeping into the race as it progressed. 4-5hrs in we were in p27 or so. We had another big accident, being hounded by passing drivers who thought they could lay claim to our precious time for simply blinking at us (I have many thoughts on how people think Blueflags work). Mistake made on a curb spun us around and then a car behind drove into us. 15mins in the pits including optionals. After that we were down on pace, doing 2.22s regularly instead of the 2.19 race pace. Some of our drivers were pretty rusty and made even more mistakes. In the end we figured it was not fun anymore and driving any more wouldn't give us any reasonable chance at advancing in the ranks. And so we ended our effort at the 12th hour. Final result was p35, so still 11 positions ahead of our start.

In the end our demise was almost entirely due to our own mistakes and lacking practice. Some of us also got quite bothered by blueflags which pushed them into more mistakes. And then there was all sorts of little spins and problems compounding the time loss, we saw no point in continuing as we could not hope to gain other than other teams quitting before us.

We'll get them next time.

Hi all,

Thanks for voting! The breakdown is as follows:

Surprised to see how low iRacing was here! AC, ACC, AMS2 and PC2 look to be the most popular track titles, with Dirt Rally 2.0 being the most popular rally title.

Perhaps our hotlap challenge could have a short rally stage or two in it!

If lemmy.ml gets taken down, !simracing@lemmy.world now exists. I've locked it to mod posts only for now. I'll try to find time to backup the hot lap challenge threads.

When reading through some of the other comments on the page, I noticed there's a good number of people who at least have an iRacing subscription. Would there be any interest in a 1 month long, free content only league? It would allow people to try the sim for a minimum cost if they're interested.

A 3 week mini championship with the MX-5 Cup, Formula Ford and Street Stocks could make for a lot of fun.

I'd be happy to organize and cover hosting costs if we can get 5/10 people interested

Edit: 5 Interested, I’ll put a poll together later and we can look at running this for the month of august.

Will we ever get it tho ?

Hey all,

Just a quick question to work out what sims we're all using here.

Yes, I know they're not all technically sims, and that some of them are simcade, and some are arguably arcade. You know that's not what this is about haha!

Yes, it's also very PC centric. Mainly because I only have a PC, but it seems that most sim racers are on PC too.

Just having a bit of fun in AMS2, testing the Gen 2 Formula Ultimate which has the new tyre physics update and it’s a game changer. So much more feel!

Can’t wait for all of the cars to get the update, hopefully soon.

I recently decided to implement an old tablet into my sim rig for the purpose of utilizing it as an external dash.

After doing some research, I came about a program called "simhub" which allows for the simulation of various dash instruments.

I have been enjoying the setup of the external dash and find it to be a great addition to my sim rig.

The process of setting it up was relatively easy and I was able to quickly get it up and running.

I know the race isnt until next weekend, but I'm ready to ride. Im going to take out the Lotus Exos 125. Ive never driven this track before, so it should be a good time. I did the BMW M3 GT2 as training wheels and set 2:15. What y’all got?

Let’s ride the M3 GT2 for a while then swap up to the Lotus Exos 125. Everybody in Assetto Corsa has these, but post a screenshot if you really send it please!

Ladies and * of the simracing Fediverse, my name is BlinkerFluid and I don't even own a wheel yet... it's out for delivery. G29, btw. Yes, YouTube.

I, am a nerd and I like operating systems that are light, utilitarian, pretty, quick and easy to use. The last part may be subjective, but I like Linux. It gives me the ownership feeling of actually owning my PC, and I don't want to give that up to race simulators.

This will all be done on Garuda Linux, KDE variant, for those following along at home.

I will catalogue my journey for historical use, for the Linux driver of the future who came here from his SearX search on his self-hosted AMD 6600 AIO he got on ebay for $200.

So where are we at, Mr. Fluid?

I own a lot of racing games and I happen to know quite a few run on Linux, like BeamNG! I also know some... kinda... work or not so well, work on Linux, like Assetto Corsa, despite spending an hour throwing protontricks commands at it from blog posts to install lots of missing Windows libraries, and the content manager. That works, at least.

Yeah so far, AC has loaded, then failed to load the exact same car and track setup, then hang, then crash. BeamNG has been a saint, and runs well, so it will likely be my first choice for testing my wheel, despite being like, my 5th choice for a racing experience, it's closer to my 1st-2st choice for a solo driving experience.

Huzzah, PCSX2!

Then there's Gran Turismo 4 and PCSX2. First off, I know I can run it as I've ran about half the game on an Xbox controller and my PC doesn't suck... that much. This hits all of my marks, personally even if it isn't that modern as this is my gaming generation, and also my generation of cars.

but a massive grey area is the wheel. I've seen general how-to's for Windows users but I'm not sure if the same information applies for me and I can't know until I have the wheel.

Dirt.. 3?!

Yeah, I'm 35 and I've been gaming forever so I own Dirt 3 on steam despite it not actually being on steam anymore. I'm pretty sure I can get the wheel running with this, although I wonder at what level.

I have a few others but I'm not sure what the utility of a racing wheel with arcade racers would be, but I'm at least going to see what chaos unfolds, and I'm also interested in cruising around GTA 5 with a wheel despite it not really being a sim. The experience would be tight.

I will keep you updated! Stay tuned!
