Hello friends! Friendly neighbor over at sh.itjust.works popping in to lend a hand. Here's a very useful set of instructions and tips that have been floating about, I hope you find it useful too.

You can ignore the "How to Join Lemmy" part if you're already happily set up on startrek.website, but the rest'll still be useful.

I'm happy to answer any questions people may have!

(These instructions are for using Lemmy in a browser. If you are using an app, some steps may differ.)

How to Join Lemmy

To use Lemmy, you need to be a member of one instance from the list at https://join-lemmy.org/instances. You will still be able to see content from anywhere, but the instance you choose will determine:

  • What URL you use to log in to Lemmy,
  • What content shows on the homepage when you select "Local" or "All",
  • Who moderates your instance, and
  • What rules you agree to when you sign up.

Choose an instance that matches your interests, language, and region. (If you want more information about an instance, you can tap its "Join" button, which will show you its current homepage in the main view and its description in the sidebar. You can also check the tables here and here.) Please avoid joining instances that are already crowded (1K+ users/month). If an instance gets overcrowded, it can start running slowly or experiencing downtime, so choosing an uncrowded instance will give both you and others a better Lemmy experience.

Once you have decided on an instance, tap its "Join" button to open it and then tap "Sign Up" in the upper-right corner. Fill out the form and wait for your account to be approved.

When your account is approved, log in and customize your profile and settings. If you change your language settings, select "Undetermined" in addition to any languages you speak so that you can still see posts and comments that are not tagged as being in any particular language.

How to Find and Subscribe to Communities

There are four ways to find communities through Lemmy:

  1. To browse communities that others in your instance are already subscribed to, tap the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and choose the "All" scope. Tapping on a community name will open it through your instance.

  2. To browse communities across all instances, visit https://browse.feddit.de/. Tapping on the community's name will open it, but probably not through your instance (in which case the page will say that you are not logged in). Instead, follow these steps:

    a. Copy the community's URL or remote name. You can use the copy button next to the community name, you can open the community outside your instance and copy the URL from your address bar, or you can open the community outside your instance and copy the remote name (which will look like [!community@instance.tld](/c/community@instance.tld)) from the sidebar.

    b. In your instance, tap on the "🔍 Search" button in the upper toolbar.

    c. Make sure that you have chosen "All" for each of the four filters: "Type", "Scope", "Community", and "Creator".

    d. Paste the community's URL or remote name into the search field and tap "Search".

    e. One of the results should be the community shown as an icon, a name, and a subscriber count. If you do not see it, or it is buried too deep in the search results, try changing "Scope" to "Local". If that does not work, you may need to wait a bit and try again.

    f. Tap on the community in the search results to open it in your instance.

  3. If you want an experience similar to Reddit's r/all, visit https://lemmy.directory/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Hot/page/1, which aggregates from these communities as described here. As in Option 2, you can copy and search for a community's URL to open it in your instance and subscribe to it.

  4. If you don't see a community by browsing, subscribe to https://lemmy.ml/c/findacommunity and make a post about what you're looking for.

Once a community is open in your instance, subscribe to it by tapping on the "Subscribe" button at the top of the sidebar. It will then appear in the "Subscribed" section of your "Communities" tab, and its posts will show on your home feeds.

Can't find a community you're looking for? If your instance allows it, you can create the community yourself by tapping "Create Community" in the upper toolbar.

The simple version of that wall of text is if you're the first person on your instance to subscribe to a community:

  1. Get the URL (for example, https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy)

  2. Go to the Communities page

  3. Search for that URL

  4. Change all search options to "All" (even "Communities")

  5. Click the federated link it gives you (for example, https://startrek.website/c/lemmy@lemmy.ml)

  6. Click subscribe

EDIT: Also, there's a new project for finding communities across instances! lemmyverse.net is a REALLY cool and easy way to find communities that you might want to subscribe to!

I just found this post on IMDB and I can't believe I haven't heard about this yet. How do I see/hear them? I didn't see it on Paramount+ or YouTube, so I guess the next stop is the high seas? 🏴‍☠️

SPOILERS OF SEASON 4 OF DISCOVERY

I have recently finished watching season 4 of Discovery and havent read any reviews or opinions on it before or after watching. Here I want to share my views.

Basically, I am very frustrated. Not because I think its complete trash, but because I think they had a very cool concept which they screwed up.

I separate, what I think are the main issues, in these two points:

  • Non-stop apocalypse ready to happen
  • Spore drive killing character development

I will cover both now in more depth.

Non-Stop apocalypse ready to happen

So in this season we are introduced with the idea of rebuilding. Rebuilding a great Federation, to return it to its glory and make the quadrant and galaxy prosper again. Soon we are introduced to this anomaly, DMA, which destroys an entire world and is basically unstoppable and is coming for other worlds as well. This, then, turns out to be artifical and creators are these very cool aliens at the edge of the galaxy. The task is to meet them and convince them to shut it down.

Honestly, I am tired of this thrope that every problem has to be a world-ending, galaxy-ending, universe-ending problem. Everything is so huge, everytime its either we succede or we all die. There is no more room for simple problems, "every day" problems. By far, the best episodes are episodes where "small" problems are solved. Like the episode where Zora's consciousness was explored or in previous season where Saru beat his fear and so on. They work much better because audience can understand them much more, connect to them more easily than "entire universe will be dead". At a risk of sounding like a hater, this is why TNG is so damn good. It is a bunch of small stories than are easy to grasp and connect to. You dont need a world-ending problem to make a good plot.

Spore drive killing character development

I think this is a unexpected consequence of the spore drive. A lot of character development in old shows was happening during the their travel to the destination. That was the time dedicated for character development, it was logical, it was simple, it worked. Now, with spore drive you dont have time for that. You are instantly in the combat or a problem.

How they do character development then? They do it in the middle of the mission. So there is a time sensitive thing we need to do, we have a few minutes to get the fuck out, lets talk about our emotions. I am all for talking about emotions, but damn, you are trained military personnel. You do your job first, then talk about your emotions. Its like firefighters would go into a burning building and pause to have a chat about their childhood. You go in, you do the job and you talk after the mission is over. Basically, the moments they choose for character development are extremely illogical and unnatural for trained military personnel.

My ideas on how to fix it

First, for the character development. Just give more screen time before and after the mission to this, not in the middle of the mission.

For the plot. I loved the idea of the future and rebuilding the federation. And i even like the idea of this aliens, which look super cool. But I would love to see more diplomatic episodes, where this federation rebuilding would actually been shown. Give us 1 episode of heavy diplomacy so we can appreciate what goes into rebuilding it. It surely is not as simple as "Join us, please. Ok we agree".

Also these aliens could have been prime example of "new civilazation" and trying to bring them into the federation. Overcoming vast differences between the species, accpeting those differences and finding the common ground.

Basically, more diplomacy less apocalypse.

Do you agree, or do you think i am wrong? Please, I welcome the discussion on this.

“Well, I think what Terry did with Season 3 is so extraordinary, and I think that the appetite for it is, I think, undeniable. So certainly, I am a huge advocate of some version of that continuing. It was so spectacular, I think, what he did. And so, you know, right now, there's no pitching of anything. Right now the world is uh shut down [due to writer's strike]. But, you know, I would really hope– let me put it like this: I signed the petition [for Star Trek: Legacy] too.”

During Voyagers Season 4 and 5, the crew periodically encounter a group of waste managment freigters from a species called the Malon, who are in the business in dumping millions of tons of theta radiation into "isolated spaces".

During their first encounter, they offered the Controller of a freighter a way to reduce theta-radiation to a minimum the same way Starfleet does with their ships warp core. This was declined due to disrupting the waste managment sector and "putting them out of business".

A few episodes later, in the episode Juggernaut, they encounter another Malon freighter with ruptured theta tanks, which explosions will wipe out anything in a three lightyear radius.

During a crawl through a service catwalk, B'Elanna and one of the Malon begin having idle conversation, much to B'Elannas dismay of course. In this conversation, the Malon describe their homeworld as a pristine, beautiful world, and to keep it that way the giant waste managment industry exists.

Wouldn't that be a perfect time to offer their plans to recycle Theta radiation again, which would keep their world pristine without the extremly hazardous and poisonous work? If not suggested by B'Elanna, why hasn't it been suggested by Janeway?

#ActivityPub is super cool once you see it in action.

For instance, you can visit the new StarTrek lemmy server here: https://startrek.website/c/startrek. Looks like a reddit sub with posts, threaded comments, upvotes, &c.

OR you can follow the same server on Mastodon ‪@startrek‬.
Every thread and comment shows up as a boosted post.

Continuing my DS9 rewatch. Tonight’s episodes were

  • Afterimage
  • Take Me Out To The Holosuite

Take Me Out To The Holosuite is such a great episode. I enjoy it every time.

  • Odo as the umpire is perfect.
  • Nog: what do I do? Worf: find him and kill him!

That is all. Have a good night everyone (or morning depending where you are in the world).

I love having an entire live TV channel dedicated to re-runs of old Star Trek episodes

Ok so, I have a little Kodi setup which includes a live tv system hooked up to Pluto so I can grab a bunch of channels for free. Turns out, this includes not one, but two whole channels of just Star Trek!

The first one is mostly TNG and the original series, and the other one ("creatively" called More Star Trek) has mainly Voyager and Deep Space Nine. I like these because I don't even have to think about what episode to watch, and can just enjoy some Star Trek!

The only downside to this is well, ads lol

How are folks using the decidedly beta Mlem doing?

It’s not as fully built as the developer’s demo pages would suggest.

However, it can do more than some have criticized.

It’s definitely idiosyncratic at this point.

So, I’m curious, in the spirit of assisting in getting this community going, to share what people have figured out that works.
