May 2025 update: Film festival season

If you're seeing more posts here than usual, it's film festival season in the northern hemisphere. We're getting exposure to lots of new movies from small studios from around the world seeking distribution deals. I'm working my way through some long lists of films in alphabetical order with a limit of 10-20 per day as to not spam the community. Subscribers can expect regular posting cadences to resume in a few weeks.

This is a community for posting and sharing trailers and teasers for upcoming film, television and video game premieres. The goal is to provide subscribers a curated feed of trailers for UPCOMING media. General-purpose posts about movies, television and games are better suited for other communities around the Lemmyverse. This place is just for trailers.

Rules

  1. All posts must be trailers or teasers; not full movies, not trailers for trailers, and not clips of popular scenes. Meta posts from mod staff are OK, but should be kept to a minimum.
  2. No fan-made trailers or remixes.
  3. Trailers for upcoming content only. Do not spam the community with trailers for media that has already been released.
  4. Link to official channels for trailers whenever possible (ie: the YouTube accounts of each film's studio or distribution company); avoid linking to videos from media outlets that function as aggregators / re-posters if you can.
  5. Post titles should follow formatting guidelines: "Media Name (release year, relevant creator credit)". Creator credits should be directors for films and games, showrunners for television series. Other details such as starring actors, writers, production studios, etc can be added to the post description.
  6. Don't be a jerk.

Original title (SO): Tuulada ku xigta Jannada (The Village Next to Paradise)

Mamargade spends his days tending to a dusty public restroom on the edge of a Somali village, scraping together a modest life for himself and his spirited young son, Cigaal. With little more than a mop and quiet determination, he tries to offer stability in a place where opportunity comes in narrow windows—often opened by leaving. When his sister pursues a high-risk plan to migrate abroad, the family’s fragile balance begins to shift, forcing Mamargade to reconsider what it means to stay behind.

With a photographer’s eye and a patient rhythm, Somali director Mo Harawe builds a tactile sense of place where routine tasks—filling water jugs, sweeping sand, waiting—carry the weight of survival and small acts of hope. The film is steeped in lived-in detail, inviting viewers to see beyond headlines and stereotypes of the Horn of Africa.

The Village Next to Paradise finds quiet power in what its characters are willing to carry for one another. In a landscape shaped by absence—of resources, of certainty—Harawe captures the emotional texture of those who stay behind, and those who leave, out of love. Without grand declarations or sweeping drama, drawing strength from the everyday sacrifices that tether families together, even as geography threatens to pull them apart.

Original title (ES): La infiltrada (The Infiltrator)

In one of the most turbulent times in the history of Spain, Mónica, a 20-year-old fresh out of the Police Academy, is recruited to infiltrate the terrorist group ETA. Under the false name of Aranzazu Berradre, she pretends to be a young sympathizer of the group. “Arantxa,” a magnificent role played by Goya Award winner Carolina Yuste, moves to San Sebastián to achieve a mission that lasted for years; battling loneliness, the feeling of abandonment, doubts, and the risk of being discovered and murdered at any time. During her infiltration, she had to completely cut family ties in order to dismantle the Donosti commando. Monica/Arantxa is forced to confront not only an armed gang, but the toxic masculinity of its members. Inspired by real events, Undercover, the 2025 Goya Award for Best Film and Best Actress, recreates an unknown, shocking, and terrible story. Arantxa Echevarría (Carmen and Lola) fleshes out her characters with strength and deep and moving humanity. Undercover, the highest-grossing Spanish film directed by a woman, goes beyond the suspense political thriller to offer a story that serves as a testimony to dark and violent times that still have ripple effects in today’s Spain.

Original title (PL): Pod wulkanem (Under the Volcano)

Immediately thrust into the familiar slow-build, tangible tenseness of an awkward family vacation (set in the sun-drenched Canary Islands), discomfort and longing for a return to routine only intensify when it becomes clear that there is no longer a home to go back to.

While you’d think the idea of a permanent vacation might sound ideal, this film does a wonderful job of encapsulating that ache you feel when you are more than ready to shower and sleep in your own bed again. To be washed in more familiar smells and nestle back into routine. To let your sunburn cool and regale your friends with stories and mishaps that are funny now that they are over.

Unfortunately for this family, their home is in the Ukraine, and it has come under attack.

While the adults struggle to hold their own fears aside for the wellbeing of the children, they are lacking a definable “light at the end of the tunnel” to make their promises ring sincere. There are no solutions to aim for, and the ground has already shifted under their feet beyond repair. Under duress, like the volcano, the family threatens to burst apart at the seams, exhausted, scared, and pressured into making a decision.

You feel for them because you could be them. No stability in life is promised, only held onto. It happens naturally, much like the feel of these characters drifting through their days, unsure where to stand. Mortality is always a presence lurking in the peripheral view. It’s the stranger in the corner of the elevator with whom you try to avoid eye contact with, even though they are asking you to push the buttons and ascend to the next floor of the hotel.

In order to show how easy ad fraud is to exploit, a former tech executive gathers a team of software developers to create a digital ad fraud operation right before our eyes. Making clickbait websites and harvesting bots that won’t get flagged as bots, they show just how extensive the problem is. Uber is one victim, having lost millions of dollars to ad fraud, but so are small business operators all the way down to people who can barely afford the cost of phone data being used up by ad fraud malware. You might think the two companies who run almost all of the digital advertising on the internet, Google and Meta (a.k.a. Facebook), would want to put a halt to this, until you learn that they make money no matter how real or fraudulent each click is. Unclickable presents enough information to make you wish our government was functional enough to put proper regulations in place.

Original title (AR): إلى أرض مجهولة ('iilaa 'ard majhula, To an unknown land)

The refugees in this story have made out of their camp and travelled to Athens, where they are stranded en route to Germany. Chatila is clever and resourceful, and it falls to him to come up with a plan; Reda, his cousin, is sweet but hapless, owing in part to a weakness for drugs. To raise the money they need for fake passports, they resort to increasingly desperate crimes: stealing, sex work, human trafficking. To sustain themselves, they nurture the fantasy of the café they plan to open in Germany, where Chatila’s wife will cook, and they’ll make enough money to bring the rest of their family, currently stuck in the camp.

While films about refugees are not uncommon, what sets this film apart is the way the director puts us squarely in Chatila and Reda’s shoes as they try to figure out how to reach their final destination, how to keep themselves alive in the meanwhile, and how to do it all without losing their humanity in the process.

Original title (PT): Traslados (Transfers)

Through rigorous journalistic investigation, Transfers revisits one of the darkest episodes of the last Argentine military dictatorship: the infamous Death Flights. Through a thriller-like rhythm that leaves no respite, the film reveals the horror of those violent years in which men and women were kidnapped, tortured, and thrown alive into the sea or the Río de la Plata from State planes as part of a systematic plan of extermination. Transfers sheds light on one of the most emblematic episodes of the death flights: the kidnapping and murder of the “twelve of Santa Cruz,” a group of Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, human rights activists and two French nuns captured in December 1977. The film brings together testimonies from detainees, journalists, mothers, and grandmothers from Plaza de Mayo, researchers, judges, anthropologists, witnesses, and many well-known figures, on how these flights became the modus operandi to make a huge number of people disappear, of which very few bodies were able to ever be recovered. Nicolás Gil Lavedra’s Transfers is a poignant and urgent reconstruction that underscores the vital importance of continuing to fight for memory, truth and justice.

Original title (ZH): 一匹白馬的熱夢 (Yī pǐ báimǎ de rè mèng, Fever Dream of a White Horse)

Herders and horse riders are losing their way of life in Mongolia and bemoan the overuse of their beloved steeds in daring acrobatic shows for Chinese tourists. Director Xiaoxuan Jiang, a native of Inner Mongolia who studied film in New York, has created a set of emotional characters in a bleak but beautiful Mongolian setting.

Director Jiang’s lovely quiet film features beautiful scenery and effective acting that speaks to the ongoing destruction of native cultures. Themes in her previous award-winning short film (Graveyard of Horses, 2022) have included femininity, nature, animals, and mysticism.

Main character Saina—played by an actual champion rider (and non-professional actor) of the same name—struggles to keep the family’s livestock and land, which are jeopardized by his father’s mounting debts, and to maintain his relationship with his estranged wife and small child. To Kill a Mongolian Horse offers a rare look at Inner Mongolia from an insider’s perspective.

Original title (TR): Öldürdüğün Şeyler (Things You Kill)

Ali thinks of himself as a modern man, progressive and self-aware. He teaches Comparative Literature at a university in Ankara; he cooks; he gardens; he regularly ventures back to his parents’ small town to help his sisters care for their ailing mother—something their more traditional father can’t be bothered to do. But there are cracks in this veneer as well, as Ali feels his masculinity called into question in both his personal and professional lives.

When his mother dies under dubious circumstances, Ali’s long-simmering rage at his father emerges. As his suspicions grow, so too does his desire for revenge. It’s about this time that an enigmatic drifter named Rıza arrives at the cabin he has outside the city, and negotiates a job tending to the land—and whatever other tasks Ali might send his way.

Iranian writer-director Alireza Khatami, who won the Best Director prize at Sundance earlier this year, cites David Lynch as a major influence on this film, which he also describes as deeply personal. The result is a surreal psychological thriller about violence passed down through generations, as well as the distinct identities that exist within each person and the existential struggle that may play out between them.

Original Title (KO): 여름의 카메라 (Yeoleum-ui kamela, Summer camera)

Summer is reluctant to finish her late father’s final roll of film until she finds a surprisingly captivating subject: her school’s soccer star Yeonwoo. When she develops her prints, she is puzzled to find lovingly framed photographs of a strange man. On her quest to unravel the mystery of her father’s friend and her own attraction to Yeonwoo, Summer receives help from an unexpected mentor. First-time director Divine Sung realizes her vision through beautiful cinematography, empathetic character development, and the universal experience of first queer love. The film successfully grounds itself in Summer’s unique perspective as she navigates the joy of her sapphic awakening and the grief of confronting a family secret. Summer's Camera avoids the tired tropes of many queer narratives to provide a wholly delicious slice of life that balances the humorous and the bittersweet. This delightfully tender story of first love and loss will resonate for audiences young and old alike.

Original title (FR): L'Histoire de Souleymane

The anonymous Uber Eats driver delivering take-out orders across Paris? That’s Souleymane, an immigrant from Guinea, racing through traffic on his bicycle, one order after another. Because he has no papers, even this job requires him to use the identity of a fellow delivery driver, and pay a hefty fee for the privilege.

Souleymane has applied for asylum in France, and in two days he will have an interview with the bureaucratic government agency that will determine his future. In the hope of improving his chances, he is paying a dubious fixer to help him get the papers he needs and navigate the process. The fixer tells Souleymane that his real story is not compelling enough and that he needs something more extreme involving political persecution and torture. Over the course of chaotic days and sleepless nights, Souleymane struggles to memorize the details of this fictional narrative.

Non-professional actor Abou Sangaré gives a spellbinding performance in the title role (one that won him the Most Promising Actor award at this year’s Césars). And director Boris Lokjine infuses his story with the pulse-pounding urgency of a thriller, right up to the fateful finale.

Original title (FI): Kenraaliharjoitus (Dress Rehearsal)

Travel agent Jane (Iina Kuustonen) lives a comfortable, stable yuppie existence in Helsinki with Mikki (Riku Nieminen), her theatre-actor boyfriend of 10 years. While their sex life appears active and content on the surface, Jane is thrown for a loop when Mikki suggests trying an “open relationship” to spice things up. Jane is initially resistant but eventually agrees to attend an exclusive sex-positive weekend retreat, where the 40-ish couple can explore other romantic pursuits. While Mikki wanders off, Jane bumps into Valma (Laura Malmivaara), a free-spirited woman and veteran of the polyamorous lifestyle, who encourages Jane to explore hidden facets of her love language. Let the mid-life crises begin! As Jane’s relationship with Valma deepens, jealousy begins to wreak havoc on her personal and professional life, with often disastrous and hilarious results. This debut feature from Finnish TV writer/director Paula Korva, could be called a “rom-dramedy” for its skillful depiction of the awkwardness, excitement, and befuddlement felt by newbies to the 3D chess game of polyamory. Korva treats her characters with grace and humor, allowing them room to evolve gradually in this modern spin on the joys and absurdities of gender-fluid dating.

Original title (DA): Vogter (Guardian)

Danish director Gustav Möller returns with his second feature, another claustrophobic, unrelenting psychological thriller. A guard at a maximum security prison, Eva (Sidse Babett Knudsen) has never fit in with her colleagues, who revel in the opportunistic brutality synonymous with the job. Despite the deeply personal reasons behind her choice of career, Eva allows nothing to crack her stoic, unaffected veneer. But when Nikolas (Sebastian Bull), a young man guilty of an exceedingly vicious and gruesome crime, is transferred to Eva’s prison, she is instantly transported back to the past and can no longer separate herself from her job or the violence it begets. What begins as a crusade for justice dissolves into a ruthless game of cat-and-mouse between guard and prisoner that cannot end until one has broken the other in mind, body, and spirit alike. With bold, commanding performances and an atmosphere so heavy you could cut it with a knife, Sons is an unflinching look at the special breed of barbarism only found in prison that spares no one—on either side of the bars.

Original title (FR): La Cache (The Cache)

Based on the novel by Christophe Boltanski, Lionel Baier’s fast-paced, moving, and impeccably art-directed comedy transports us to Paris in May 1968, viewed through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy. While student-led protests rock the city and promise to change the world forever, the boy is having the time of his life. His parents are on the barricades, but the rest of his unusual, multigenerational family is gleefully crammed into their shared apartment: his charismatic, creative uncles; his grandfather, a Jewish professor of medicine; his grandmother, a wryly smiling French author; and great-grandmother, a former dancer from Odessa, wrapped in her bedclothes and her memories of pre-war glamor. But the tumult in the streets brings echoes of the past: the last time soldiers and police roamed the streets, the uncles had been forced to wear yellow stars on their jackets, and grandfather to hide in a secret spot beneath the stairs. It’s this hiding place that an exceedingly exalted and profoundly unexpected personage seeks out when he turns up at the family’s door. Baier has the gift of a light touch with serious material, and this film, with its nods to cultural touchstones of 1960s Paris, its jazz score, and its extremely stylish filmmaking, oozes charm while making a serious argument about history, memory, and movies.

Original title (SV): Rörelser (Movements)

In this masterful period drama, director Jon Blåhed transports us to “beautiful [yet] godless” near-Arctic Scandinavia and recounts the harrowing stranger-than-fiction true story of the fanatical cult that overtook the Indigenous Meänkieli community in the 1930s. When Swedish authorities arrive in her village, schoolteacher and devout Christian Rakel (Jessica Grabowsky) is horrified by the cruel acts the men plan to perform on the children in the name of racial purity and left at a loss when they claim the Meänkieli translation of the Bible is incorrect. When townspeople begin experiencing intense visions which they believe to be messages from God, it appears the salvation and freedom they so desperately seek is finally upon them. When Rakel’s husband, Teodor (Jakob Öhrman), finds himself leading the charges, the movement rapidly spirals into chaos as a doomsday of their own making approaches. The frenetic strings and dread-inducing horns of Rebekka Karijord’s standout score perfectly compliment the striking landscape and powerhouse performances from Grabowsky and Öhrman. Perhaps just as much as it is a startling look at the dangers of fanaticism, Raptures is a cautionary tale of the cyclical horrors of colonialism, begging the question: Is it better to create your own apocalypse than succumb to someone else’s?
