I suspect her being Jewish had a role to play in them pushing for a harsh penalty as well.

IIRC, Behind the Bastards mentioned Kissinger was a huge part of the push, which is interesting because he is also Jewish.

In their six part series about him, Kissinger was quoted saying he'd be antisemitic if not for the accident of his birth.
