General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

I'll accept driverless cars on the road, when the CEO of Uber can go to prison when they run people over.

Around 20k people are hit by cars every year in the UK, Ford, VW and Peugeot would have to go through a lot of CEOs if we held them to the same standard

About 400 pedestrians are killed, which, as a pedestrian, is the figure I'm interested in.

And good. Let's see how keen they are to cut costs (which is 100% why Uber would rather have a machine rather than a driver take the wheel) when their predecessors are languishing in HMP Parkhurst.

I don't give consent to share my space with automated vehicles. Limit them to 20pmh in all built up areas (same for cars with drivers tbh). I don't care how many million miles of motorway driving is done safely. That's not where I am. If I need to cross road, sometimes a driver will flash his lights and wave me over. Do you trust a machine to do that? I certainly don't.

First of let me state that I'm not arguing for Uber or automation. I personally believe we should collectively say fuck cars. But I'm also for a level playing field and by all reports, there's less accidents when the driving is automated.

Let's see how keen they are to cut costs

There was something posted a while back in !avs@futurology.today that said robotaxis are unviable as a business for now. We're far away from them reducing costs.

Do you trust a machine to do that?

If programmed to, yeah… moreso than humans.

But again, I'm not advocating for Uber. Just thought your initial comment seemed unfair.
