I think before suggesting volume training to beginners we might describe augmenting the body weight exercises. The intensity of most functional movements can be improved by, for example, wearing a backpack with some heavy stuff in it, like books.
Volume does work, but it requires increasingly greater time commitment and usually more soreness in recovery, either of which might sap a beginner’s motivation before they fully develop the habit and discipline to overcome.
Not a PT, just my .02
Sorry this just occurred to me tonight. The Guardian might be targeting an older British demographic, and volume training could in fact be a better recommendation for older beginners.
Just to be clear, this is entirely outside my expertise, but if I was to coach an older person with less experience in resistance training I’d be more inclined to suggest volume training specifically for its lack of intensity.
I’d still expect more soreness and greater time investment, and would openly prepare them for it, but would rely on their time-tested resolve and/or mandate from a doctor to drive them.
Again this is only my opinion, I just realized I was assuming mainstream readership of this newspaper with which I’m less familiar.
Here’s an introduction to volume training that appears to adequately cover the basics: https://www.getlabtest.com/news/post/guide-volume-training-muscle-growth
