Day 3/31 of TabOKtoberfest

  • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Tabak Oridjinal, now with 28 mm Gelousy knot
  • Razor: Raido Star – 堕落の剃刀 Razor of Depravity (8/8", extra hollow, carbon steel kamisori) 🇺🇦
  • Lather: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Post Shave: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Original

My degenerate kamisori has landed! This form factor is completely new to me, so I've been impatiently waiting to try it out.

This thing is a beauty: folding kamisori configuration, symmetric (western) grind, full 8/8" width, short blade (compared to western straights with their ~70 mm edge lengths, normal by kamisori standards), polished finish, and —of course— the mark of degeneracy. It looks and feels really well-made, and the beautiful faux-tortoise shell scales sit tight and perfectly centre. Roman knows his razor-making.

The geometry felt immediately comfortable. The tang is fat and square and gives good control of the edge. The wide blade is surprisingly heavy for its short build and it moves through stubble with quiet conviction. I've been spoiled by u/Whosgotthepudding edges for the last month, but even so, Roman's factory edge felt quite good.

I'm enjoying the stubby length. I'm always a bit at a loss what to do with the full length of western straights, so this feels right.

Thanks @whosgotthepudding@sub.wetshaving.social and the gang of degenerates for making this happen!

Слава Україні!

Where have you been? I was about to ask if anyone heard anything from you or if we need to send a search team to Switzerland until I read something about a break in one of the SOTD threads. Hope everything is going well for you!

Btw, a really beautiful razor. I personally prefer the non-folding kamisoris, but one with a western style symmetrical grind sounds awesome! Plus I always like faux tortoise shell scales, giving it a unique look IMHO.

Yeah, I'm all good. I'm just taking a step back from the hobby, making a little more space for other things.

I personally prefer the non-folding kamisoris

I can't get used to them. I'm always worried about the exposed edge. They are like a gun without a safety 😅

I have a pretty Henkotsu kami, and it shaves really well, but I'm reluctant to use it if I don't have a lot of time to be deliberate

No worries, I know that all too well. Sometimes we need to put stuff on the back burner to focus more on other important things. Since it seemed like your passion for wetshaving was never burning you out, I was a little worried that you had health issues or a mountaineering accident or something like that 😉

I must clarify: I only like these in terms of looks. The only thing I have is my KAI Captain kamisori shavette with AC blades and even that one came with a leather sheath for the open blade, kinda like a samurai sword 😆 Now, given that I mostly shave my head, it doesn't nearly get used enough. Mostly collects dust. Traditional kamisori are a no-go for me since their grind is mostly for barbers shaving a customer vs. something you can comfortably use on yourself. That's why I really liked the idea of one with a western grind, even if I'd never get into straight razors myself due to the honing requirements...
