A reasonable objection. Many Muslims have associated LGBT and women's rights with US meddling and influence, so they resolutely refuse to consider them.
I think a lot of this stems from the US history of screwing with Iran. Iran was somewhat open to women's rights before the US couped their government in 1953 when their prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh tried to nationalize oil.
Under US puppet rule, Iran did implement some socially progressive policies.
After the Iranians revolted and took back control in 1979, they massively overcompensated and became extremely socially reactionary. Because of Iran's significant influence in Islam, these views also propagated across many Muslims in the world.
Since Iran has been constantly under attack from the US, they haven't really had any space to reconsider this view. I do think that once Israel is destroyed, and once the West loses its iron grip on the world, that Muslims and Iran will be able to reconsider their views.
it's still dumb to conflate social progressivism (queer rights and womens rights) with usanian imperialism
queer people like me in the global south, particularly in muslim-majority countries are forced to flee their own homeland because of this, because they'd rather see our heads on a pike than leave us alone and live. even without the conflation with usanian imperialism, some of them try to use religion to try justify this and demonize us.
