Having chosen an instance when creating an account for lemmy, am I now tied to that instance forever?

What happens if, for example, the owner of that instances decides to just stop managing it one day? Does my account just go away with it?

yes, that's the situation at the moment. You could always make a second or backup account on another server.

Do you know if there's a way to transfer an account from one instance to another?

It sounds like the best way might be to have my own instance then I can decide how/if I want to interact.

@can_i_be_serious Not yet. We are starting to see things like account migration in the microblogging fediverse space, so I imagine it will arrive in the groups/communities space one day. This area of the fediverse is a lot less mature though, so I imagine it will be a while, as they'll be focused on essential features first
