Alright, trying an ELI5 here.

Big internet platforms like YouTube, Instagram etc. will get new rules in the EU

  • Less relevant/targeted ads for minors
  • Ads are not allowed to target you based on your gender, ethnicity etc.
  • More transparency and more control over which content will get shown to you
  • Big internet companies can get sued for the content users upload
  • They will implement reporting and delting tools to not get sued
  • Maybe we'll see some upload filters
  • Instagram will give you a chronological feed
  • TikTok will give you some trending stuff within your region
  • EU only

I've got a bad feeling about this.

[–] SkepticalButOpenMinded@lemmy.ca 30 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I suspect they just can’t be willfully negligent. Right now Facebook could actively promote a genocide and not see any consequences.

Rohingya says what

[–] VentraSqwal@links.dartboard.social 13 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yup. I was up for it until that point. That bullet is a terrible idea.

[–] wahming@monyet.cc 27 points 2 years ago

Eh, there's more nuance to it than implied in the TLDR

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com -3 points 2 years ago

You should, this is really bad. These laws are all so backwards. That's like suing the postal service because of people putting illegal stuff in the mail. Or phone companies for streaming copyrighted material because a song was playing in the background.

Looking forward to seeing ads for bras... :)

Just kidding. I don't see ads anyway.

You'll never get the support you need with that attitude!

More transparency and more control over which content will get shown to you

So I can block all the "this changes everything", "incredible thing you did not know", "mind blowing details about game x" videos from youtube? When I load Youtube I always scroll down on the main page and click don't recommend this channel on all videos that have titles like that or thumbnails with arrows, red circles or other crap thumbnails. Don't care what channel it is.

[–] ripcord@kbin.social 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you browse your subscribed channels?

[–] OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Nope, I am mainly subscribed to business channels, like news and other stuff. I don't really follow youtubers, I think I have around 3-4.

There's also some stuff about interoperability which is partly why threads were making noises about the fediverse.

The requirement for reporting and blocking tools presents a problem for X, which has just removed those. Although it wouldn't surprise me to see Musk just pull out of the non-US market altogether . He's trying to turn it into a payment platform and doing that in every country simultaneously would be impossible.

That's the Digital Markets Act.

Don't know why there are two acts that sound so similar and have similar goals. It's confusing.

Personal tl;dr:

  • Affects only large platforms for now
  • Selling illegal goods is not allowed and there must be a way to report that content
  • Ad targeting based on sexuality, religion, ethnicity or political beliefs is not allowed
  • Targeting ads on children is restricted
  • Transparency on how recommendation algorithms work
  • Option to opt out of recommendation algorithms
  • Requirements for data sharing with researchers and authorities
  • Cooperation with crisis response requirements
  • Requirement for external and independent auditing
[–] TenderfootGungi@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Musk is actively trying to stop data sharing. He threatened to sue a researcher that was using the api to collect data for breach of terms of service.

[–] EnderofGames@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

...to stop data sharing for AI training (or other purposes) for other people. There is no way I believe Musk wants to stop the collection and use of data, especially since he is trying to make his own AI. Even with the fact he is trying to kill off Twitter at the same time.

Here's the key paragraphs:

online platforms must implement ways to prevent and remove posts containing illegal goods, services, or content while simultaneously giving users the means to report this type of content.

the DSA bans targeted advertising based on a person’s sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, or political beliefs and puts restrictions on targeting ads to children. It also requires online platforms to provide more transparency on how their algorithms work.

The DSA carves out additional rules for what it considers “very large online platforms,” (over 45 million European users/month) forcing them to give users the right to opt out of recommendation systems and profiling, share key data with researchers and authorities, cooperate with crisis response requirements, and perform external and independent auditing.

Bloody brilliant.

[–] kiwifoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

This is likely why .world initiated some changes over the last week.

[–] fogetaboutit@programming.dev 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Explain this to me in csgo terms.

[–] ItsDedo@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The app you're using does not let you save comments?

[–] Gsus4@feddit.nl 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Liftoff should have it and I have been saving posts for later, but I need to check where they are :) plus no reminders

[–] Gsus4@feddit.nl -1 points 2 years ago (1 children)
