Hello everyone! Yet another Reddit Refugee, here. I'm a network engineer and DIYer with a passion for calculators, fountain pens, and mechanical pencils. Been on Red Matrix/Hubzilla for years, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this part of the Fediverse is like!

Hi everyone! I’m a lifelong Iowan in my mid-20s. I work in small museums in the southeast part of the state as a consultant and contractor. So many of these small institutions have part-time volunteers and no professionally trained staff, so I offer guidance with collection management, exhibit curation, event planning, and digital marketing. I like to tell history through material culture and through a philosophy called post-humanism, which looks at the world around us in terms beyond the human perspective.
Outside of that, I am really into head-fi and am mostly listening to music in my free time. Additionally, I like to tinker with Arch Linux and FreeBSD installs and have been teaching myself how to code in Haskell. I’m still rather new to federated social media, but have really been enjoying my transition thus far.
Welcome! My degree is in archaeology, and I really really loved all the work I did in the historical archaeology arena while in school and for a bit afterwards. Your job sounds like what I wish I would have gotten into ten years ago.
Hi there! I'm from Colorado, which is almost the midwest! I saw the community and decided to pop into Lemmy through here, though, since it seemed to be friendly and welcoming. I write queer fantasy romance and love a good book!
I am Robbey, born in Iowa, live in tx now, used to be on Reddit, loving it much more on lemmy
Are you there, fellas? It's me, Bizzle.
Lemmy.world wasn't working for me so I jumped ship over here.
Hi! I'm Nolan from Minneapolis! Trying out this board as part of a broader effort to un-big-tech my life. Didn't see one, so I just created a community for posting about bicycles/cycling! I also love music, the outdoors, and dumb movies. Nice to meet you all!
Hi, former Wisconsinite in exile, trying to move back.
Howdy, Chicagoland area here. I love the idea of a "location-federated" social media so I migrated here from lemmy.ml.
Migration was smooth however I'm finding this instance to be quite slow to load pages, is it just me?
Hello! I’m from NW Arkansas. Here because I’m getting frustrated with reddit and suspicious of it as well. Lots of bots, and fear mongering.
It’s important to me to try to keep my life in perspective. Touch grass. Go on hikes. I am looking for a place where information is not censored by billionaires so here I am… hello.
Hello! Just curious, where did you hear about lemmy/this site specifically?
I heard about it on Reddit. People getting warnings just for upvoting comments about protests. Not violent protests mind you…. Regular protests.
Been replacing windows, mac, IBM db2 mainframe servers with rack mount i86 linux since ~2000. Everything is moving to hosted hardware VMs and away from in-house hardware. It's just cheaper to outsource server maintenance. semi-retired since 2017. Typing isn't my favorite activity. coordination is failing. Be kind. Oh yeah, never used 'social media' much until 2016. wasted time on slashdot, digg, forums, tech and motorcycles a lot. Found a good thread on reddit about a garage door opener I bought. https://stackoverflow.com/ for scripting. had a fun guild on WoW for a few years. SenJin Defiant lol
From Iowa, moved to Wisconsin a few years ago after graduating college with my BSN. Most of my family has always been involved with the Democratic Party and have had a liberal, progressive views. I grew up loving history and current events which turned into an interest in politics that only grew once I got in high school. I’d say my liberal to leftist conversion began after the 2016 election and just started to learn how outdated the dems were and incompetent they have always been. I’ve only gotten more and more leftist as the years have gone by to the point where it’s hard to talk to people who only hold milquetoast liberal beliefs.
Why I’m on the fediverse? Curiosity: I had a random tab that lead to a link that explained the fediverse and just went down a rabbit hole about it today. After doing a bit of research, I finally looked into the platform and its quirks. Always been intimidated because it seemed too techy for me to grasp (still don’t have a total idea on how this all works just yet but I’m getting there) but realized the importance and the freedom that comes along with it. I was also a bit concerned about using the fediverse when I learned that it’s popular because it supposedly upholds “freedom of speech” to its truest form which I have always interpreted as a dog whistle for right wing lunatics to use slurs like an 8 year old. So it’s a massive relief to see a strong left wing presence here without having to utilize an algorithm to see such a community.
Greetings, all. Former Game Developer, located in the Metro Detroit area, looking for an alternative to Reddit. Presently in an offshoot of the game business, doing simulations work with game engines, but nothing real fun and interesting, and mostly can't-talk-about stuff.
Also have done some maybe interesting work in online resale.
Huge Star Trek nerd right now, mid Superhero pop culture nerd, fan of 80's-00's alt/rock/metal.
This makes me wonder if this site has a spot for user profiles, and stuff like that. Always interesting to try out new things, and so far, this doesn't turn me off... although I could wish for some adjustments to the UI. If I get particularly vexed by something, but I still like it, I might dig into developing something :)
Hello everyone, new user living in Northside Indianapolis but a lifelong Midwesterner that doesn't plan on leaving. I've been concerned with the trends on Reddit for years now since u/spez has been trying to make as much money off the platform as they can. The recent silencing of noncompliant users for opinions on what is supposed to be an open forum was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
I am a firm patriot to the actual ideals of the U.S. and believe economic system should not be tied into it's governing documents as any kind of argument from the wealthy elites controlling the country and the media. The best system for all the people is the best system for the country whether its "Capitalist" or "socialist" or something else. The foundation of the country is a free, open, Democratic Republic not locked to one economic scheme and right now only the leftists seem to be trying anything like that.
Long time deep thinker on civics, political ideology, systems of all types (controls, engineering, human). And how they should best function. A big passion for history. Love gaming of all types, sci-fi and fantasy nerd. Will take a strong opinion and debate about anything for the fun of it as long as it stays intellectual and not an emotional topic.
Looking to start actually being involved in community both here online and in the local area as well and this seemed the place to be. More than willing to discuss anything I said here and would love recommendations for communities.
Hello everyone. I'm brand new to lemmy and I hope that I understand it soon. LOL I'm in central Illinois, there's a little blue in the sea of red around me. I have been lazy lately, between work and working OT, I've been watching TV. I knit, love to travel, enjoy cooking classes, going to flea markets among other things. I would love to figure out how to rehab some of my furniture, do some minor home repairs and garden.
Hi. I'm looking for weird shit in the Internet. I decided to hop on Midwest.social to ease the burden in Lemmy.ml
