A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

Many reasons, but I think most of all, it's that Rome has fascinating precursors of modernity in it that were nonetheless in many cases snuffed out by its decline, and thus our own modern institutions are not directly descended from (in most cases). It's like seeing parallel evolution.
I could probably write more, but I'm about to head out.
