In a black market setting they'd be worth a lot more. These guys thought they could get less money, but cover their tracks by selling it for the weight of the gold instead of the value of the significance of history.
That is so god damn stupid.
The irony being at any point in this chain of exchange someone could have turned the previous people into authorities and gotten far more, AND been above board.
Let's not valorize snitching, but they could have sold it back to the museum for more; absolutely.
When it's cultural heritage? Fuck yeah snitch. You don't snitch if someone steals food or clothing, or a tent. But when were talking about ancient history? You snitch. That item can never be remade.
You don't snitch to cops. Maybe to the museum. Maybe put out word that theres a gold thing so much more valuable than what it can be melted down for floating around on the market. Maybe put out a bounty.

If your heritage is cops, if thats the only thing you can think of to protect it, if none of your people are educated enough to care and protect it, and you want to beat them into compliance, use your heritage to abuse your people while you feed me lines straight out of the British museum's PR department?

Not saying my culture of origin is any better–it's not–only that your perception of yours its values and its methods of acting paint me a picture of a dog shit society that deserves to be forgotten.
To be clear; my argument is that you didn't have to suck this much, and the cops failed because this is not what cops are for.
