If your grandmother had wheels, she would be a bicycle.

[–] Mordred_85@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Also: if I had three balls I’d be a pinball

[–] MadhuGururajan@programming.dev 18 points 6 hours ago

not this argument again.

how the fuck do you know she won't be a motorcycle? Do you need a motor thats not your heart? Why doesn't she become a tire demon or a stool with wheels for sests?

[–] glorkon@lemmy.world 20 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

And Berlin would be in fucking Utah... as someone who lives in Berlin, I strongly resent this notion.

[–] FrostyTheDoo@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Utah is actually one of the most beautiful states in the US! The people are a little odd, but very nice. Which was actually my experience in Germany as well, so maybe it's not far off ha

The people are a little odd, but very nice

you have not actually lived there, have you. The people are very odd, not nice at all, violent if you upset them slightly, and the only beautiful parts are where the people aren't.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 6 hours ago

London being San Francisco is rather apt

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Ah, it’s basically the same cultural niche. Haven’t you heard of Salt Lake City’s 24 hour club?

[–] glorkon@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (2 children)

Sorry if I'm mistaken or failing to detect your irony, but isn't Utah this highly conservative state, with a vast majority of the population being white (or Hispanic, which to me counts as "white but speaking Spanish") and where most people follow a crackpot religion which basically views fun things like sex, drugs, alcohol and homosexuality as a sin?

Comparing that to Berlin, a permissive, irreligious, hedonistic, multi-ethnic place, brimming with culture and open-minded people, seems rather far-fetched to me.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

It was sarcasm, yes. There’s definitely no 24 hour club in SLC

[–] glorkon@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Sorry, I kinda suspected it was sarcasm but wasn't 100% sure.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

No worries, text makes it difficult and if you’re not sure on the culture of SLC, I can see it being unclear

[–] kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Utah is, salt lake is the one spot of relative normalcy

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 5 points 9 hours ago

At least put Bordeaux where LA is.

Can you host images somewhere else than reddit? It's blocked(?) by some instances, I can't even see them without going to lemmy.world, or following the link to reddit. On reddit you can't open images in full size, literally the worst image host I can imagine.

Reuploaded to lemmy.zip:

(I won't comment on how much work was to create this screenshot. Classic r/mapporn)

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Ngl, you have me curious how much work it took to make that screenshot.

[–] infeeeee@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)
  1. Go to this website or one of its clones: https://thetruesize.com/ If you search for "true size map" there a lot of similar websites
  2. Eyeball the countries
  3. Screenshot
  4. Post

It's like 5 minutes max, with some practice I think you can lower that to less than half minutes.

Or, as it's from reddit, I suspect its a repost bot, so just find the last time it was posted

Recreated something similar now:

[–] ooli3@sopuli.xyz 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

the avif format doesnt seems to work on lemmy

[–] infeeeee@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

No, lemmy.zip converts it to avif, the original is jpg, this is the link of the image you posted: https://i.redd.it/sg3ssz188iig1.jpeg

I don't know if the problem is on lemmy's side, or reddit rate limits us or something. But we shouldn't give clicks to reddit anyway.

Also if the post will be deleted on reddit it will stop working here as well, so it's more future proof if you mirror it to here or somewhere else.

[–] ooli3@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 minutes ago

the problem is that the avif format, is not embedded. When I post it, you have to go outside of lemmy to see it. Or do I miss something?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 13 points 13 hours ago (11 children)

This is a good reminder to those who keep asking “why don’t people in the US do anything about this regime?” Well because people who voted against all this (including their representatives) live thousands of miles away from the asshole who did. Should I go burn down my representatives offices even though they voted aligned with my choices?

[–] MousePotatoDoesStuff@lemmy.world 10 points 10 hours ago

I think a better argument is that a lot of people ARE doing what they can, and that the regime is making it difficult to do so. Also, if being immersed in the River Styx of Online Discourse for the last ten years taught me anything, it's that trying to call someone out for (percieved or actual) inaction or mistakes does not work.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago (7 children)

"My country is really big therefore it's not my fault if nothing gets done about the regime that's fucking up my country."

[–] Soulg@ani.social 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

"my country is really big and I do not have the physical ability, means, or resources to travel to where the problem is to effectively impose change"

Your comment is literally proving it's right, you're too stupid, ignorant, or stubborn to consider anything other than what allows you to continue spewing nonsense

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

And your comment proves you are ok with doing nothing. Fucks sake.

Utter utter fucking BULLSHIT. It's all just trying to justify doing pretty much fuck all about the orange paedo and his goons. Fucking embarrassing.

At no point did I say travel to the whitehouse and punch the kiddie fiddler in the face. Which is impossible. But where's the mass protests? No fucking where.

Where's the general strikes? {tumbleweed}

Where's, well, any decent effort at all? "Oh well, it's a big country so I'll just wait for someone else to do it".

FUCK OFF with your "but it's miles away" CRAP. You guys live in a world where communication is almost instant yet there's hardly any protests. And yet in decades gone by people could protest without the internet. Why haven't you guys? Because most of you are ok with a child abusing, failed reality TV star, rapist dictator running things.
Which, as far as I'm concerned, is tantamount to you condoning what he's done.
FUCK OFF

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Why aren’t those Russians stopping Putin? They’ve had like 20 years.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 4 points 8 hours ago

Because they didn't stop him 20 years ago.

If Paris were Los Angeles, the war in Ukraine would be near Memphis

not really. Kansas too would be under fire.

Like Dallas also would be

[–] hitwright@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Ah shit.. did an assault start from Transnistria side?

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

In the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city faced some Russian bombing attacks. On 23 April 2022, Russian troops bombarded Odesa with cruise missiles. They destroyed both the city's military infrastructure and residential buildings, killing eight people and wounding another eighteen people. In addition, the Russian military destroyed more than 1,000 m2 of the territory of the cemetery. The city suffered further aerial attacks on regional infrastructure facilities in October 2022, cutting off power to 10,500 households and injuring three people.

Huh, I always thought the UK was much smaller.

[–] turboSnail@piefed.europe.pub 12 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It’s not the size, it’s how you use it.

Just for reference, the largest company that has existed so far was the Dutch East India Company. Didn’t come from a very large country either, but that company had its own navy and it even negotiated treaties with countries just like a sovereign nation would.

Now we're cooking! That's more like the kind of edge cases we need to prove a point. Exactly 0 km^2 of area to protect, but you still have 13 500 knights. 😄
