Hi folks! There hasn't been any misbehavior in this community, nor to be frank do I expect any, but it's good to have redundancy, cover more time zones, etc... in case of spambots and the like. I'm looking to add a couple more mods!

I don't have many metrics by which to choose fellow mods (such as the age of the account) so all you need to apply and get picked is to be active in this community (which means contribute posts and/or comments... the more quality contributions you've made the more likely you're to get picked). I'm CET, btw.

If you want to guard this community and help it stay a cozy place, apply here in the comments to become a mod. Feel free to add any additional reason why you think you should be picked! Are you a geographer? ~~Are you power hungry?~~ Are you ~~glued to your computer~~ an internet enthusiast? Apply now!

Applications will be open for a while until I pick a couple of peeps.

Located in London, I measured the RTT or round trip time to 574,691 random webservers and plotted the times on the globe.

Discovery was done with masscan, measurements using hping and plotting with an old Python script I've revived and enhanced.

This is part of the next writeup on my blog, with which I will be posting any of the code I've used.

Couldn't find more recent data. Was talking with a friend recently about their idea of moving to a rural location and we were brainstorming what the benefits and downsides are.

Hi, I made this map a few years back for Reddit. The source used is OmniAtlas, which is why it may be wrong (for example, in the Buenos Aires Province, with Alsina's campaign).

I made this in 2022 in QGIS (but when I uploaded it on Reddit back then, you may find it as starting at Ste-Helena island.... don't ask me why, I don't remember how I made that mistake when posting it)

A map of the New York City subway/metro

Full size here : https://www.mta.info/map/5256

Old map here https://www.nycurbanism.com/map-store/1972-vignelli-subway-map

The new map was designed by the MTA’s Creative Services Mapping Department and, like many major subway systems around the world, utilizes a diagrammatic style, employing bold, straight lines making it much easier for the eye to follow and more suitable for digital users. The white background, bold colors, horizontal writing and use of black dots make the map more ADA-friendly and easier for people with low-vision or cognitive disabilities to read.

Designers also focused on text legibility, keeping text on one line wherever possible and making better use of open space to alleviate crowding and using a black subway bullet with a white character to provide maximum contrast for easier reading. The legend on the map is now more detailed and includes accessibility, transfer, and safety information, as well as a QR code that leads users to the MTA website.

Although this map is a new design, the creative team drew inspiration from previous maps including:

  • Preserving the official brand colors established by the 1979 and 1998 Hertz maps
  • Using a similar geometric and diagrammatic aesthetic introduced to the New York City Subway with the 1972 Vignelli diagram and revived by its successors, Waterhouse Cifuentes
