hey I'm a solo gamedev and I recently launched the demo for Folk Emerging.

if you're into turn-based strategy games like Civilization and enjoy in-depth characters, cultures, and ecosystems, then this might be for you!

curious to hear what folks around here think

nice, how was your experience? all feedback is much appreciated

I've always loved the beginning of a Civ game, but kinda hated how bogged down the middle and late game get. So if this gives the feeling of early civ games, I'll probably love it.

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

nice! yeah this is very much inspired by the early part of Civ, and the many hours I spent playing Civ 2 and 3 as a kid :)

Ok, right off the bat the nested tooltips is a really cool system.

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

glad you like it. i must credit At The Gates, which pioneered it afaik, and games like Old World that have improved on it over time

Stone age nomadic 4X is fresh. Most 4X games end up as city builders with borders—nomadic shifts the whole economic model.

true, one of impacts on the resource economy, for example, is that here you don't have stockpile limits, but you have carrying capacities, so if you have more than you can carry it gets left behind when you move

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

What does 4x mean?

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

This is an extremely cool concept; I hope to be able to give it a shot soon!!!

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

thanks :) if you do, lmk what you think, i'm actively updating the demo so all feedback is much appreciated

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

We'll see if I can get it running, my only personal machine right now is an old laptop running linux so I'll have to try WINE...if it works at least you'll know the basics are real solid to work even emulating windows on old hardware :P

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

ah i fear there might be some performance issues, but definitely lmk if it runs and if so at what FPS :)

[–] brynden_rivers_esq@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

for sure for sure, would never hold my own jank against the software lol just how life circumstances go sometimes!

It’s a specific type of strategy game in which you: eXplore your surroundings, eXploit the natural resources, eXpand your empire, and eXterminate any competition. Think like the CIV games.

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

@athatet gave a great summary, and the Civ games are the biggest mainstream example of 4X games. there are many sub-genres and lots of games that use it as a foundation but extend it in various ways, and Folk Emerging does that too by centering around nomadic gameplay and complex ecosystems

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

so I'm currently playing Foundation, I played Civilization a bunch and Civ2 a bit but mostly avoided that kind of game in favor of 3rd Person Shooters and like.

I will give your demo a go soon

[–] CuriousDynamics@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

ah i loved Civ 2 :) could never get my hands on the original Civ 1 though. and thanks!

I filled out the form after playing for nearly 2 hours. I thought the form really lacked places to give feedback so im gonna put it here.

What I liked, the movement mechanic, the combat, balancing foraging and building. My favorite thing was collecting and trading the relic items that gave your tribe bonuses I thought this fit the theme and gameplay perfectly. Music and art was solid.

What I didnt like, late game there is to many other tribes that surround and box you in and you get attacked constantly. The specialist select felt bad, they need to do something in my opinion to become a specialist otherwise you're constantly selecting specialists with no care who they are. There should be a few more things to build early as it felt like 99% of my turns were foraging(maybe thats intended if so then thats fine). The events that you select like scaring off predators there is no feedback to tell the player what the outcome was. This should be more apparent in my opinion.

Overall I enjoyed it even if it was a bit unpolished.

Some UI/UX comments.

When you hit enough culture to make a choice it should popup, same for science. It should be more clear that you have to right click on the same square if you dont want to move that turn this confused me for way to long.

thanks a lot for checking out the demo and sharing your feedback! i'm noting it all down. btw i'm planning a demo update in the next couple of days that will already address a couple of these points, namely give players more ways to get out when cornered somewhere by other tribes, plus some UX improvements for moving/staying. thanks again
