The Iowa high school principal who was shot and wounded while trying to protect his students during a school shooting earlier this month has died from his injuries, according to the school district.

Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was among seven people injured in the Jan. 4 shooting. One student, 11-year-old sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, was killed, authorities said.

The suspected shooter -- a student at the high school -- died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Fucking hero. Law enforcement in Uvalde should take notes.

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 93 points 2 years ago (4 children)

I didn't even hear about this school shooting

[–] be_excellent_to_each_other@kbin.social 52 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The coverage seemed very low key compared to usual. I don't know what to make of that.

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 45 points 2 years ago (2 children)

It's barely even news anymore. I'm guessing there just wasn't that high of a body count?

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 42 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Boringdystopia. Not getting onto the news because your school shooting didn't make the cut.

[–] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That's what those 8 year olds get for not being photogenic enough.

[–] curtainshowers@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 2 years ago

"Local photographer apologies for earlier comments, calling mass murder victims 'hard to shoot.'"

[–] Pandantic@midwest.social 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Small body count, bullied white male - it’s too boring.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 years ago

And in Iowa :(

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago

What a fucked up reality.

[–] Grayox@lemmy.ml 25 points 2 years ago

Cause all the Republicans currently campaigning in Iowa dont give a fuck about school shootings.

[–] OpenStars@startrek.website 2 points 2 years ago

Do you think it's bc of the other things going on in Iowa right now? The Iowa quota may be full.:-P

[–] Cold_Brew_Enema@lemmy.world 32 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Because it's so common it's hardly even news worthy. School shootings are just a very common occurrence here.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This angers me so much as a parent.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This is so sick and I hate myself for thinking this, but-

We took my daughter out of school last year and put her in online school because she was being severely bullied.

And after we did it, one of my first thoughts was, "well, at least she won't be in a school shooting."

I know it's still rare even though it happens in the U.S. more than anywhere else, but it still scares me.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I shouldn't have to worry about it because the spoiled dicks want their toys.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I don't disagree. No one should have to worry about sending their kids to school.

[–] KreekyBonez@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

rightly so. the government is failing to protect its citizens from easily preventable dangers.

as long as politicians get kickbacks from munition sales, nothing will change.

[–] Default_Defect@midwest.social 25 points 2 years ago (1 children)

We're a small town, I'm not really surprised. But be happy you don't have to hear all of the conspiracy theories about the shooting that happened a mile from you, its maddening.

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

If it happened in a small town anywhere else, it'd be international news though

Food for thought

[–] PopcornTin@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

After people went through his social media, there were hints he may have been leaning towards coming out as trans. News then went quiet about this one.

[–] jdadam@lemm.ee 76 points 2 years ago

His daughter said he tried to talk the shooter down while protecting others. Chokes me up as a fellow Iowa teacher. I identify with that so much. Never met him, but I respect the hell out of him.

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

[–] SpringMango7379@lemmy.world 41 points 2 years ago (1 children)

And yet still no gun control.

[–] dovahking@lemmy.world 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The American govt will let every last student die before regulating guns.

[–] Raxiel@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

They protected their debt, what more do you want?

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 26 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is this the death where trump said, "Get over it"?

[–] Pwnmode@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Yes. Not to defend him ... I would never, but it was more than just get over it. Still fucking horrible.

A brave man trying to protect his kids. I don't want to hear shit about teachers for at least a week.

[–] rusticus@lemm.ee 21 points 2 years ago

Kim Reynolds can fuck herself.

“Nothing can be done, says only country where this happens regularly”

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

What a fucking hero.

For all the shit we give high school principals while we're in school, they usually really care about the kids.

My high school principal was actually a surprisingly decent guy. He let my girlfriend (now wife) put on a Christopher Durang play. Christopher Durang plays usually have gay themes, including the one she put on. But he thought it was really funny and he let her do it.

This was in the 1990s.

I still gave him shit, but I feel bad about it now.

[–] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago

RIP Hero. There is nothing more honorable than protecting the kids. Rest well Dan.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

"his family wrote on GoFundMe. "

Is there any more to this story or is that just their choice of communication?.

[–] snooggums@kbin.social 20 points 2 years ago

My guess would be that GoFundMe is being used to fund his healthcare expenses since we apparently can't just have that free at the point of service like the rest of the civilized world.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Sounds like the Perry HIgh School is about to be renamed the Marburger High School.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 years ago

Damn, the news couldn't have put his name in the title. What a shit job. Rest easy Dan.
