Your comment posted 3 times so I'm guessing there's something with your internet haha

I'm still deciding how "serious" the project is going to be, but if all goes well I will definitely add support for other formats. I'm already looking at adding Pandoc for document conversions.

The choice of Godot for a UI library is an interesting one; how big is the program in the end?

Not small but not huge either, the app itself will be within 25MB uncompressed (<10MB zipped) - but it doesn't matter that much since most of the file size will be the dependencies used to convert stuff. I have a blog post talking more about Godot for GUI apps if you're interested.

The rest of the feedback is appreciated! I was just about to add some text showing which file was being converted when processing.

Appreciate the feedback!

I'm currently working on a file converter app that lets you easily convert your files in bulk without needing to mess around with 500 settings or confusing command-line apps. It's mostly a replacement for all those "convert X to Y" websites.

This is just a front-end for ffmpeg and imagemagick, but the goal is to make something so simple even my parents could use without uploading sensitive files to shady websites on the internet. I've looked around, and I found all the local GUI converters like Handbrake are unwieldy to use, especially if you just want to convert in bulk.

The project is still very early, but I'd like some feedback:

  1. Does anyone think this project is worth finishing, or are there too many GUI file converters out there already?

  2. What do you think about the UI so far?

Cheers.

Biggest WTF news I've read today. I'm not a web dev so this doesn't affect me, but this is bizarre.

We get a closer first look at what's around the corner for AI coding tools, and make Bun better for it

This incredibly popular tool is now going to merge with an AI company and shift gears to be turned into some forced AI hype machine. Yipee! Exactly what all the devs were hoping for! /s

I've yet to see any AVIF in the wild. I think support for it is not quite there yet, everybody is still relying on WEBP.

It's a heavily modified and upgraded version of source 2, but yeah.

It's probably because the hardware market is really unstable right now. Prices of RAM, storage, etc have gone way up the past few months due to shortages. Valve are waiting to see where they'll land before committing to a price.

It's telling that Valve opted to use open-source Turnip drivers for their VR headset instead of relying on Qualcomm to actually support their own chip.

This episode felt like twenty minutes of material stretched out to an hour.

Yeah, this episode gave me Severance season 2 vibes. Hopefully it picks back up because the first two episodes were really well paced, but I'm starting to skip 10 seconds constantly and not missing anything in the shot.

This almost definitely confirms my theory from episode 2: the hive is 100% compliant with what anybody wants. I'm guessing the other few survivors will figure this out soon and it's going to be a huge mess.

Also I think the hive is being coy about it. They say they'd do anything so Carol to be happy but once again I'm pretty sure they also have a 'biological imperative' to do what they're told to do no matter what. Maybe that was intentional so the aliens that created this code can just walk into earth and instantly take control without any resistance.

I mean it's been shown she's always been a miserable person even before the event, so her acting this way makes sense. She is literally the most miserable/drunk person on the planet right now.

You can help by writing to Apple CEO Tim Cook (tcook@apple.com) and letting him know that you won't buy Apple devices because of their proprietary software and DRM.

There really has to be a better call to action than this:

What a stupid, nothingburger article.

The company is considering releasing millions of old email addresses that were originally created by bots in its early years. These accounts were disabled almost immediately, but the addresses lived on. [...] The problem is that many of these addresses are extremely common.

So what? The author rambles about the horrors of getting emails from people who have accidentally written in a generic email handle. It's not a huge deal. Tons of people using other email services like Outlook and Gmail also have generic usernames, it's a user's choice on whether to get one or not. These are old bot accounts that have been disabled for almost a decade, so it's not like somebody would send emails assuming it was the old person using the handle.

Proton says it wants community feedback, which is good, but the fact that it is even considering such a reckless idea makes me question the company’s judgment.

"I'm mad that the company is surveying their community", great argument.

Google: "Based on this feedback and our ongoing conversations with the community, we are building a new advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn't verified. We are designing this flow specifically to resist coercion, ensuring that users aren't tricked into bypassing these safety checks while under pressure from a scammer. It will also include clear warnings to ensure users fully understand the risks involved, but ultimately, it puts the choice in their hands."

Thank god. I would've ditched Android for good if this went through, and while it sounds like it would be annoying for casual users to enable unverified apps, at least we can still install them.

I haven't see any discussion for this show on Lemmy so I thought I'd be the first!

Pluribus is the new show from Vince Gilligan, creator of Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul. The marketing on this show was so vague that it was intended to be watched completely blind, with nobody knowing what it was even about.

TL;DW: Fast charging over 2 years only degraded the battery an extra 0.5%, even on extremely fast charging Android phones using 120W.

And with that, hopefully we can put this argument to rest.

Hey folks, I just finished writing a guide for setting up NTFS drives for Linux gaming. There's been some misinformation and questions on whether it's feasible, but if you set it up right you should be fine.

Hopefully this can help others avoid the pain I've gone through to make it work without issues!

Richer HTML exports are very exciting to me. I don't know if it'll be viable but if I ever self-host my own blog, I'd be interested in using Typst instead of Markdown.
