The weaponization of Kirk’s death is so alarming that even one of Trump’s former allies is rattled. Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host who was once one of the loudest voices in the Magasphere, recently issued a stark warning about the way that the Trump administration appears to be leveraging Kirk’s murder to trample civil liberties.

“You hope that a year from now, the turmoil we’re seeing in the aftermath of [Kirk’s] murder won’t be leveraged to bring hate speech laws to this country,” Carlson said on Wednesday during an episode of his podcast. This was in reference to attorney general Pam Bondi’s comments (which she has now walked back) that the Trump Department of Justice would “target” people disseminating “hate speech” following Kirk’s killing.

“And trust me, if it is, if that does happen, there is never a more justified moment for civil disobedience than that, ever,” Carlson added. “Because if they can tell you what to say, they’re telling you what to think … There is nothing they can’t do to you because they don’t consider you human.”

Like Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right congresswoman who has recently started speaking a limited amount of sense on certain topics, Carlson is no ally to progressives. Indeed Carlson’s hate-mongering, and his former public cheerleading for Trump, are a large part of why we are in such a mess. But the fact that even a far-right voice like Carlson is worried about the authoritarian direction in which the US is heading should chill you to the bones. Carlson appears to have realized that no one is safe in the dictatorship that Trump appears intent on building. Not even him.

Just got banned from lemmy.ml for asking how Kirk oppressed anybody. I literally did not ask or do anything else.

These people are unhinged. But they can't stop the conservative wave.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) changed the name of his gerrymandering rally from “FAFO” (for “F*ck Around and Find Out”) to “Yes on 50,” named for Proposition 50, after the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

As Breitbart News has reported, Newsom and the state legislature tossed out the state’s constitutionally-mandated, independently-drawn congressional map in favor of a back-room gerrymander that removes at least four of the nine Republican-held seats. They are calling a special election in November, on the legal theory that since the independent commission was passed by voters, the new, political map can be as well.

Newsom has cast the gerrymandering effort as necessary to “defend democracy” after Texas began to consider redrawing its map in line with recent federal court rulings, removing several Democrat seats.

On September 9 — the day before Kirk was assassinated — Newsom posted a flyer for the “FAFO” event..

1On Tuesday, Newsom posted the new poster for “Yes on 50”.

ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman is under fire for putting a spotlight on what he called the "very touching" text messages Charlie Kirk's alleged assassin sent to his transgender partner.

After the press conference announcing the murder charges against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, Gutman marveled at "such specific text messages" that were unearthed about the murder weapon.

"But, also, it was very touching in a way that many of us didn't expect," Gutman said. "A very intimate portrait into this relationship between the suspect’s roommate and the suspect himself, with him repeatedly calling his roommate, who is transitioning, calling him ‘my love.’ And ‘I want to protect you, my love.'

"So, it was this duality of someone who the attorney said not only jeopardized the life of Charlie Kirk and the crowd, but was doing it in front of children, which is one of the aggravating circumstances of this case. And then, on the other hand, he was, you know, speaking so lovingly about his partner. So a very interesting and … riveting press conference."

For years, Vice President JD Vance came to know Charlie not merely as an ally, but as a beloved friend. Today, Vance takes up the microphone for his fallen friend and hosts The Charlie Kirk Show. Vance and others at the White House share their memories of the man who has become an immortal American hero and Christian martyr.

VP Vance hosts the Charlie Kirk show, I found this talk extremely compelling both for its staunch appeal to free speech, but not condemning those who disagree. It's worth watching - in full - regardless of political ties.

TLDW: It's both a remembrance of the departed, and a condemnation of the celebration of violence against someone who would debate anyone.

Note - I'm not a conservative, very far from it. I however was very disturbed by the recent assassination, and I've been trying to parse the rhetoric, I thought it is very relevant to this community. What I found most alarming is that people are actioning violence using only vague references about what someone said, rather then what they actually said - a very sad game of political telephone inciting violence. This has to stop. Honestly, the us vs them mentality is very much part of the problem (a thing which JD Vance falls into in this very video).
