So I have thoughts about what if platforms that we seemly are trying to move away from such as Reddit decided to Fedirate and join the Fediverse.

Do you think it would be beneficial or practical in the long run?

How do you think people would change their thoughts of the Fediverse if platforms like Reddit did do this sort of thing?

What would you do if Reddit did join the Fediverse?

Greetings, Kbinners (and anyone else from the 'verse who might be reading this). Back on the platform most of us migrated from, there was/is a subreddit called r/menslib, which was like r/mensrights minus the misogyny and shitting on marginalized groups and minorities. Those of you who subbed will remember it was a great place to chat about mental health, gender roles, societal expectations, toxic masculinity, things like that.

So far, I've not been able to find its equivalent in the fediverse. Here on Kbin, there's m/men, but that basically mirrors the old mensrights sub. It's gross. I found https://lemmy.ca/c/mensliberation in lemmy.ca, but that community is small (9 members) and inactive. I used Kbin's magazine/community search and only found those two; I then tried Google, came up with no leads and figured either my Google fu just sucks or their algorithm is getting worse (likely both), so I tried duckduckgo and still found nothing. Pretty much everything I found that is even remotely related is from people looking for the same thing or is a post or comment on Reddit itself.

Is there a place out there like the old menslib? I mean, there must be, right? Help me, fediversers. You're my only hope.

Edit: I have been banned from m/men. I mean, that's fine, I wouldn't fit in there anyway, because I don't think men are the ones being oppressed.

Maybe this has been asked a million times (I didn't find it... links and useful search queries are appreciated). But how should I deal with a toxic friend in a group?

I'm sure this situation is very common.

More details below, you could just skip it :)

We are a large group 7-11 friends ages 20-30 (group A). The group is very nice, and I am the common friend with all of them. After the summer the group will be 5-7 friends (the others return home after 6 months), with the toxic friend and his girlfriend in the group. The rest of the friends were friends for longer.

The toxic is very subtle. I know him for 8+ years, I didn't like him at first but I don't remember why. Recently I have seen his subtle manipulative behavior with another circle of people (group B), somewhat larger and "less friends". He took the lead a long time ago, decreased meeting frequency by a lot.

[Edit: This paragraph is hard to understand, try to improve it]
This is an unsorted list of things (very broad) that I recently noticed:

  • He is blaming others for things not going well.
  • He blames other people for his own actions.
  • Instead of working as a group, he works only with a friend and he does not report any kind of progress, we are "guilty" for not taking initiative.
  • When a task has to be done, he asks very open-ended questions that nobody can answer in the chat. One of the persons that could have answered was outside the group because she was his ex and he didn't want to be in the chat with her. We had to forward messages back and forth between them, communication was a big issue, we hardly met in person this year. Then he blames that nobody answers his questions.

We said everything in the previous paragraph to him, we are "personally attacking him". The person that he blames the most for things not going well is her ex.
For rest of the group (except him and his friend), the bad atmosphere is his fault. We work well together, if someone doesn't have time to do something, someone else does it. We meet regularly, etc.
From now on we will be taking the lead so hopefully thing will go better. (He resigned willingly, as everything is falling apart from his point of view).

The issue remains with my group of friends, I'm good friends with the others, but I don't want to find myself in shitty situations with them.

Some time ago, in a smaller group 3-5 friends (group C), ages 20-25 I detected toxic behavior with one of the friends (always wanted the group to follow his plans). I didn't know how to handle the situation, so I showed up less with them using working on (group B) as an excuse, as I didn't want him to feel bad.
Just seeing the group less backfired with him being a very active member in group B just to keep the friendship with me.... Luckily he improved a lot recently, but we are still not so much friends as we once were.

Now talking about the toxic guy I'm currently asking:
I thing he is not ok and I'm a bit worried. Maybe he needs help, and if something like this happened to me, it would feel very bad if friends just vanished.

There is a lot of advice in the line of "you are not responsible for others feelings" and to avoid toxic people, this is what I followed the first time that I found myself in this situation. I'm not sure anymore how to deal with this.

I've you have read so far, thank you a lot :)

For any here who are both multilingual and also experience synesthesia/ideasthesia -- concepts such as numbers, days of the week, educational subjects, music, etc. being felt or experienced to have a specific color, taste, smell or whatnot -- is the color, etc. of that thing different depending on which language you're thinking in?

It has just occurred to me that while I've always pictured Thursday to be a kind of prussian blue, the turkish word for thursday (Perşembe) is bright carnation pink. Sunday is yellow (for obvious reasons), but Pazar is white. Same with anything else. Phys Ed has always been blue, but beden eğitimi is coffee-colored.

The differences with numbers, I could chalk up to relating them with whatever pictures I was given when I was first learning their names, but one cannot present an educational depiction of the concept of Tuesday.

I'd be dying to hear anyone else's experience with this. I'm super curious, especially, to hear if this difference still stands in people who grew up bilingual.

Hey y'all, is there a way to expand media (images) in the main timeline without opening the whole thread? I don't want to use the auto expand setting since that expands all of them. Just a button to expand ones that look interesting. Thanks :)

Maybe I just miss Reddit is Fun, not Reddit, but I still have RiF installed (I just can't delete it) and it still "works". I can't sign in or participate, but fuck I miss browsing everything. I've definitely replaced it with Kbin, but opening the RiF app just gives me sadness. Fuck spez.

So I seem to have found smaller Magazines / Communities that haven't been on Kbin before and after finding them they seem to have no posts but after looking through Lemmy it seems they do have posts. Does it take time for Lemmy to add all the posts or is it only new posts that will come across?

What the title says. I think the site needs to reach critical mass sooner rather than later, and on top of the relatively low activity for now, we want to avoid obstacles to new migration, even if it's small convenience stuff. So, what would make your life easier as a kbin user?

Personally, I know I use the save button a lot for important resources and future reference. Even twitter has bookmarks! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's anywhere to be found. It's also my feeling that a lot of people would prefer the boost feature to be an effect of upvoting instead of a separate button. It makes sense as a kind of "retweet" thing for microblogging, but on the threads side, it doesn't really work with the magazine-centered instead of user-centered feed.

(not sure this is the right place for this discussion, but this is currently the largest mag about kbin itself, above kbin and kbinmeta)

Hi guys, kbin noob here. Usually I don't have much trouble subscribing to Lemmy communities from kbin especially if they're on the main Lemmy world instance, but I noticed that when I try to subscribe to https://awful.systems/c/sneerclub, I can't seem to find it in search.

What's happening here? Is it a problem on kbin's end or awful.systems' end? Should I just wait it out? Thanks!

EDIT: I did end up waiting it out, and they've fixed it already on their end!

I have most of the Fediverse-based account and seem to have just gravitated towards Lemmy over Kbin as found it very confusing, What makes you prefer Kbin over Lemmy or any other Fediverse instances?

See the title. It's one of the few things that is preventing me from being able to browse super efficiently. Unfortunately a lot of my scrolling is going through the same stuff over and over.

Also hooray for more images being embedded so you can just hover over them with IMAGUS to see it!

There are a fair number of totally empty magazines created during rexit, with no threads, yet a fair number of subscribers (because the name matches a popular sub from Reddit). I clicked on one this morning, because I saw it in random magazines side bar section. No threads. Created a month ago by a user who hasn't posted a single thread or comment on Kbin.

This is like obvious scammers during a gold rush. Some people just wanted to reserve magazine names with no intention of doing anything helpful. Maybe they just wanted bragging rights by claiming to be a moderator. Maybe they think they can sell control of the magazine later. It doesn't matter to me. I just think an admin should delete these sorts of magazines. Anyone who starts a magazine should at least post a few threads. Absolute 'no effort at all' owners contribute nothing.

I just think Kbin would seem more functional and positive if the magazines that exist actually had some content.

Edit: based on a comment below, it seems that Ernest has a tentative plan in place for this sort of situation, which is great :)

What the title says. Every year I hear everyone at work go buzzing about Prime Day, and then when I'd go check what items were on sale they were mostly cheap gaff and a bunch of minimally discounted tech products. Am I missing something that's optimal to get around this time of year?

I'm American and in addition to our messed up healthcare system. Teeth are simultaneously so important that I have to see a specialist (dentist) for routine care, but so unimportant that it's not included in my healthcare coverage. Is it like that elsewhere?

The youtube comments can be a very toxic place but if you know where to look there are also very wholesome communities.

Those of you among us who remember that Don Imus used to be a thing, why was he so influential and how did he slip completely from memory?

I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech.

Mastodon has already caved, and the silence of lemmy's and kbin's developers over this matter isn't exactly reassuring. Since I more or less still have my bags packed from leaving reddit, what are some other communities I could try that would be more resilient to corporate encroachment?

195

Not that I’m complaining; nice to not be inundated with beans.

I’d assume with federation the active posts would mostly be the same on both.

Edit: I think it may partly have to do with how voting works differently between Lemmy and Kbin.

Introverts: which ones have you enjoyed the most?

Personally, this one:

-The newlyweds had theoretically been together for 5 years but saw each other so little that they were almost strangers to each other.
-The bridegroom discovered only belatedly that the one he was going to marry was a spoiled child submissive to her mother.
-The groom wanted children and the bride said she would think about it, but still hadn't made up her mind on the wedding day.
-Everyone was originally supposed to sleep at a friend's house, who suddenly put the dishes in the big ones, but the mother of the bride decided on a whim that no, her daughter would not sleep in said house, although obviously without notifying the owners.
-3 people (the bride, her mother and a guest) ended up spending the night in the village hall. The mother slept glued to her daughter and the guest had to stay awake all night for lack of a place to lie down.
-During the feast, the guests were of different origins and gathered in homogeneous ethnic groups who stared at one another.
-The DJ only played Senegalese music, which obviously only appealed to guests of Senegalese origin.
-The mother of the bride has a disconcertingly fragile ego, preferring to refuse to answer a question rather than admit that she does not know.

Over many years of using messageboards, forums and reddit, I've had the 'search, don't ask' ethos drilled into me, the idea being that creating new threads to ask simple questions is a bad thing because it decreases the signal-to-noise ratio of content.

But now that we're trying to grow a new platform, it occurs to me that a lot of appeal in established platforms is the searchable index of knowledge that has come out of people's questions being asked and answered.

In light of that, do you think we should be creating question posts more enthusiastically to build up our library of information, even if it might be stuff that could potentially be answered by doing a reddit search?
