Winston straight up flipped on Cop City Referendum then took part in doxing petitioners, but sadly he is unopposed. His backing of Overstreet is unsurprising seeing as the two share the same playbook (cop city, militarizing police, blocking council oversight, etc), and she claims to support transportation... as long as it is not in her backyard. So multiple strikes in my book.

Georgia prosecutors are facing what one expert called “probably the highest-profile failure of using conspiracy charges to indict a protest movement” in US history, after a two-year attempt to prosecute a criminal conspiracy in connection with opposition to the police training center known as Cop City.

Fulton county superior court Judge Kevin Farmer announced his decision to dismiss charges against the case’s 61 defendants during hearings this week on a handful of defense attorney motions.

After an hour-plus of discussion in this week’s hearing, Farmer came back from a break and used only 18 words to stymie the state’s prosecution, nearly three years after arrests: “At this time I do not find the attorney general had the authority to bring this Rico case.

Urge Congress: Save Public Media (protectmypublicmedia.org)
submitted 5 months ago by ryanvgates to c/atlanta@lemmy.world

Public media is facing its most immediate and serious threat yet.

The House has passed a rescissions package that would claw back $1.1 billion in public media funding already approved by law. If enacted, the impact on local stations would be swift and severe.

The Senate will take up the bill next. Send a message now urging your Senators to vote against rescinding public media funding.

Clawing back this funding – about $1.60 per person each year – wouldn’t just force stations to scale back – it would dismantle essential services that countless communities count on.

“Andrea Boone cast the sole vote against the measure, while Council member Michael Julian Bond abstained, expressing concern over the lack of public input.”

“This is a gross failure of process unbecoming to a city of Atlanta’s stature,” said Kathryn Kolb, a conservationist who has worked on the ordinance for years. “For many properties, the recompense will effectively be less than what developers are paying today. It’s a regressive joke.”

A woman has sued an Atlanta police officer for allegedly leaving her breasts exposed while taking her from her house to a squad car – where she sat several hours, topless, while officers stopped and looked at her, with one masked officer opening the car door to take a photo.

The incident took place during a pre-dawn, Swat-style raid staged by Atlanta police and agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (or ATF), on 8 February 2024. The agents sought evidence related to the arson of police motorcycles and cars, carried out in opposition to a controversial police training center known as “Cop City”, which has attracted local, national and internet media attention.

The raid – including the woman’s experience of being left topless for hours – was reported on by the Guardian at the time. The lawsuit, filed 23 May by Atlanta-area attorneys Jeff Filipovits and Wingo F Smith, asserts that the woman’s fourth amendment rights protecting her against unreasonable seizure were violated during the raid and draws on details laid out in the Guardian’s story.

Ximena is a 19-year-old college student currently under ICE detention. We are raising funds for her immigration attorney and bond. Ximena is a graduate of DHS. She came to this country in 2010 at the age of 4. She did not qualify for DACA as the program ended the year before her family immigrated. She has babysat for my kids for years. We adore her. Ximena is my close friend and my children’s favorite babysitter. All money raised is going directly to Ximena and her family to be used for legal representation.

Join Kristin Klingshirn and Chateau Elan for an afternoon of community, connection, and giving back at the Pinot & Period Party. This special event supports the incredible work of Helping Mamas, Georgia’s baby supply bank, which serves nearly 60,000 children each year and distributes over 2 million essential items to families across the state.

Helping Mamas is dedicated to ending diaper need and period poverty—one donation, one care kit, one mama at a time. That’s where you come in.

At this open volunteer event, guests are invited to drop off donations of period products—pads, liners, and tampons—and help assemble period kits for women and teens in need. While you give back, enjoy a glass of wine and live music by DJ Willie T from Q99.7 in the beautiful Pavilion at Chateau Elan.

No tickets or RSVP are required—just bring your generosity and join us on May 4th at 2 p.m. as we support women, uplift our local community, and make a meaningful impact together.

Summary

Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) faced backlash at a town hall in Roswell, Georgia, over his support for Elon Musk and deep federal budget cuts.

Constituents jeered and booed as McCormick defended layoffs at the CDC, arguing AI makes some jobs redundant.

Attendees criticized the cuts as rushed and extreme, chanting "shame" and accusing him of harming local communities.

The heated event echoed past voter outrage at town halls, with some Republicans avoiding similar meetings after Trump’s first term began in 2017.

I have both silicone from caulking projects gone bad AND kitchen mat silicone that I want to get rid of.

I don't want to send it to the landfill, but also don't really have room for silicone reuse projects in my life.

The websites for CHARM and Fulton county waste say nothing about silicone. Does anyone have any pointers?
