I'm awake. Yeah I'm awake. I just have to stay awake. Didn't sleep well last night.

This is a daily post for “casual” conversation. If you want to post or talk about something non autism related this is where to do it. For example if you want to info dump about your special interest but it doesn’t fall into “autism related” then you can post it here in the comments. I always got called out for being weird throughout my life but NOBODY ever mentioned to me they thought I was so I just got exhausted of being misunderstood and misinterpreted sometimes and tried learning the social etiquette my entire life, somethings I don't necessarily agree but I do it anyway and try understanding others doing for the sake of fitting in and I just got quite used to it, miserable at times yes, but it's become my life all of that and any quirkness I just assumed to be due to having more individuality than others since no one ever questioned me directly if I had anything other than just plainly calling me weird. I've honestly been hopeless with life more than I'd like to admit so I'm not sure how I'm going to process all of this, I figured if anyone could understand or relate to this life experience I have would be others diagnosed as well, has it been like this for everyone here and felt this same way when diagnosed (for those who were diagnosed after already becoming adults)? I'm overwhelmed and needed to talk to someone about this but I have no one other than my psychologist however I'm not comfortable discussing it with her right now about it and since Lemmy is semi-anonymous/anonymous I feel a bit more inclined to talk about it here 😞

There was a nicotine + adhd thread today in c/whitepeopletwitter@sh.itjust.works and I got to write a few paragraphs about my favorite subject: anything tobacco.
I don't know particularly what is so cool about it, but I just can't get enough information on the subject. Old fashioned snuffboxes, cigarette boxes and holders, pipes... And the rich history and culture of each brand and style and how it evolved in every part of the world is just so interesting to me.
So it made me curious about what are some of the other more unconventional special interests around this community

Howdy Folks,

From talking with many neurodivergent people throughout life, and finding community among those who have a fascination with linguistics…

Are any of you deeply interested in the subject? If so, what first sparked your curiosity? What abilities did you hope to acquire?

To connect with a wider group of people? To read ancient languages, or perhaps to win your favorite scrabble competition in a tongue you can’t speak?

I’m curious, as it feels like language learners form a spectrum of their own. For me, it helps contextualize so many facets of life, and has widened my world of friends and literacy.

Plus, it’s fun to know what someone may be thinking in their native tongue when speaking your mother language.

Living in a foreign country whose language I spoke for 15+ years from childhood gave me a huge shock, when I realized psychology and phrasing play a larger role in communication than just a daisy chain of words.

Makes me wonder how peculiar my own accent(s) / phrasing sound to their respective natives. One of my favorites it when speaking Spanish, is to accidentally declare that you are pregnant instead of embarrassed… Makes the correction twice as effective! Or when a man in German expressing his love for Hummer cars is not actually professing passion for lobsters 🦞

For those of you whose native language isn’t English… Have you had any mismatched moments like this? What funny things have you heard English learners mismatch?

I torture myself with a tongue scraper every morning. I hate it, but it helps with bad breath.

I used to rip/rub my clothes - absolutely loved the texture of the hems of a ripped up pair of jeans. It’s socially a little odd to keep a piece of denim in your pocket to fidget with.

But my beard? Always with me. Accessible 24/7. The texture is always changing and interesting. Stroking my beard makes me look like a smart person thinking about things. A+++

If i didn't already have access to an isolated cabin, for this exact type of vacation. I think i could get over all the religuous iconography in order to access this kind of silence and solitude only an hour outside a major metro area. "Don't talk to me" is an actual rule instead of me just being weird and rude.

We're supposed to be getting new windows today. But it is going to rain all day so I think may have to reschedule.

12TET (12 tone equal temprament) is a system which divides the octave (eg. C3-C4) in 12 equal parts and it's the system used on many instruments, especially in western music. Maybe I'm getting bored of it bc of the fact that I've probably heard every possible combination of notes in this system. The thing i hate about it is how limiting it is, because in between even a semitone there's a world of possibilities and i wanna study and use microtones. The thing is guitars are caged in a 12 tone system, as many western instruments are. My point? I WANT A FRETLESS GUITAR/INSTRUMENT I WANNA DISCOVER MICROTONAL CHORD CHANGES bit of a rant

  • Do you have difficulty identifying burnout?
  • Do you have difficulty identifying when you've recovered?
  • How do you decide when to go back to work?

Sorry, no answers here. I was asking you...

I'm off sick from work, because I'm burnt out, and because I know what can often occur when I am burnt out (losing temper, upsetting people, getting really frustrated with people and it getting perceived as aggression).

I didn't feel burnt out, but evidence was mounting and I had a hunch that I might be. And then I reacted kind of badly to something, and I knew "hey, I'm burnt out!". The first two days off sick involved lots of sleeping, and not being able to begin menial tasks at home.

I started to feel a lot better yesterday - I say "feel", but I don't really feel it; my physical being does something or does not do something, and then I observe that it has or has not done something. I was back to doing things like housework and hobbies, and could hold a conversation with my mum on the phone without being to braindead to talk. I must be feeling better...

I started work this morning (from home today, just by luck of the schedule), and a few hours in it was clear to me that I shouldn't be back yet. On reflection, it probably hasn't really been enough time to recover, but:

  1. I experience guilt that I'm just bunking off work because I don't feel like it today while I'm off
  2. Each day I'm off, I'm going to have to catch up on that work, which might be stressful, so I begin to get stressed that I might get stressed in the future
  3. I don't feel much in myself, it all just feels very much the same - burnt out and normal. Introspection isn't something I do well and I need to see the effects of what's happening inside me to know what's happening inside me.

I'm hoping others can share thoughts and experiences that might help me. Also, it's just nice to dump my thoughts at times like this and see that I'm not on my own in some of my experiences.

Oh, and finally: a positive I have taken away from the experience is that I seem to be getting better at preempting my burnouts, as I had the hunch it was coming before it came.
