After 2,5 years of intensive research and programming efforts, the entire Openwebsearch.eu project team is excited to grant access to its pilot of the first-ever federated pan-European Open Web Index (OWI).

From June onward, commercial and scientific development teams of any size as well as interested individuals are welcome to access and make use of almost a petabyte (and growing) of open web data under a general research license or – upon request – under a designated commercial license as well.

Given that the European Commission has launched the InvestAI initiative to mobilize €200 billion of investment in artificial intelligence, the Open Web Index comes with perfect timing.

The OpenWebSearch.eu consortium actively calls early adopters to pioneer innovative projects surrounding vertical web search, argumentative search, LLM applications including RAG and more.

“The OWI symbolizes a first step towards true European digital sovereignty and is a fundamental step in paving the way for a comprehensive open European AI landscape.“ says Community Manager Ursula Gmelch and further:

“Our goal behind this initial pilot phase is to onboard a range of projects from diverse domains to get early feedback in. We look forward to users confirming the quality and value in current functionalities and/or helping us pivot in such ways that real market demands can be met and further expanded upon.“

An official kick-off event will be hosted on 6 June from 10 am to 12 am CEST via Zoom.

Registration to the event is open under the following link:

Probably like many of you i switched to Linux. I first used it in 2012 when i heard about it in School. Back then i used Ubuntu, but could not figure it out how to play my Games on CD, DVDs and Steam so i switched back to Windows.

Over the Years i often tried it out again but had various problems with it.

Now, thanks to the Trump Donald, i have a real reason to no longer use Microshaft Proudcts. Our Boycott!

So far i tried Linux Mint, KDE Neon, Kubuntu, ZorinOS, PopOS, Debian, Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Gnu Guix, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch, Antergos. That is over 10 years.

What i found out:

  • i dont like gnome, i find the ui weird. xfce is too cobbled together imo and ugly, lxqt too.
  • i like kde and budgie
  • im currently on kubuntu and gnu guix :)

Since the warm summer months are coming there'll be people needing to buy fans once again and I'm here to suggest the Dutch brand "Duux"

After getting it recommended by a friend I bought myself a Duux Whisper 2. Its really quiet and of great quality + has an app integration.

They also have air cleaners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, mobile airconditioners and heaters!

We've all already talked about switching away from google/apple maps to something like openstreetmaps, mapy, tomtom amigo, etc. But all of these services use openstreetmaps (UK non-profit) as a source and they still miss a lot of local data even for bigger cities!

If you have some spare time, think about adding a bit of data to the map with your local knowledge. There's a lot of business data missing that is on google maps like websites, phone numbers and opening hours but also stuff like parking lots and whether they're publicly accessible and free or not. Adding these makes the competition of ALL services using OSM as a source better.

I also use the mobile app https://streetcomplete.app/ and https://every-door.app/ to add data while on my walks, these make my walks more engaging and I actually take longer ones + see new places because of it. Streetcomplete also has a focus on important and easy to collect data with their default filters, and you can choose what you want to contribute.

If you really want to get into the thick of it and contribute more than just simple data you can always check out https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/How_to_contribute and see in which of the many ways you can contribute!

Cargo shorts

Does someone have recommendations for cargo shorts? I need new ones for the upcoming summer. Everything I find are shorts without additional pockets and/or they are to short, I like mine at knee length. Thank you!

Hi, I have mostly degoogled since last year. Now switching to all european. Although there are a few things I am still struggling with. What are you currently using to replace the followings and what is your feedback on it? Feel free to also mention unlisted things which you've been impressed about!

  • Google maps/waze:

=> I use waze while driving mostly for real time alerts such as accidents and police control. What have you found to be the best alternative on this side?

=> I use google maps for going to places by walking or bus, which is not present on Waze. I also use it to see restaurants reviews and so on. Is there any platform with people's feedback?

I have just downloaded Tomtom ami go, osmand and organic map and will be testing testing them out.

  • Drive that syncs with everything automatically

=> Currently on Microsoft one drive. I have a samsung phone and it saves my photos automatically. It also saves all the files on my computer automatically.

Admittedly, on my phone, when I try to go back to old drive pictures, it's a disaster and nothing loads. Any alternative which would allow seamless syncing and work better than this? I might look into moving to Linux later on when i get the time, currently on windows 11.

  • Google find.

=> oh do I dislike Google having my position at all time. I have samsung find too, but it only detects my samsung devices and ignore my earbuds. Any good recommandation of a service with good privacy? Any which would work with motorola smarttag?

  • While I'm here: windows 11 on laptop. Which alternative set up have you chosen and why?

  • Anything which beats the free version of NanoGPT? I already have Lechat, but nanoGPT answers on the free version have been more detailed and accurate.

Ideally, I have a focus on privacy.

Thank you for your help!

There are some amazing sneaker brands from Europe. Few of them are :

Adidas (Germany), Puma (Germany), VEJA (France), Salomon (France), Diadora (Italy), Karhu (Finland), Gola (United Kingdom), Superga (Italy), Hummel (Denmark), Munich (Spain)

Adidas and puma is obviously my fav but there are many others.

Please share your fav European brand for our sneaker heads :)

You also need an API key for the Gemini API. You can get one by creating an account on aistudio.google.com and then creating an API key.

So this is basically a wrapper for Gemini?
