As we all know, the EU loves regulation, sometimes even overregulation. One area where I feel that regulation would help is computer hardware sale. When I want to buy a laptop and I visit the online retailers, normally 80% of the laptops come with Windows, 10% Linux and 10% Freedos or without any. I would very much welcome if the EU made it mandatory for manufaturers to offer the choice of OS when buying a new laptop. Just like you chose the color, how much RAM you wanted, SSD size, you could also chose what operating system you want it with. As part of that, manufacturers would be obliged to send a fix donation after every sold piece to the corresponding Linux distro team, which would help the chronic underfunding issue. Not sure how much the manufacturers pay for Windowsfor the license, but theoretically the Linux equivalent machine should be cheaper even after the donation. Any views are welcome.

It's now been six weeks since I started writing thoseย Buy Europeanย bulletins. And now,ย withย Meta's frankly infantile reactionย to the fine issued by the European Commission over their breaching of the Digital Markets Act, the time has come to tackle their services directly. Today, weโ€™re learning how to leave Meta, how to leave Facebook, how to leave Instagram, and ultimately, how to leave a toxic relationship that, for many, has brought nothing but misery andย decay.

Since the warm summer months are coming there'll be people needing to buy fans once again and I'm here to suggest the Dutch brand "Duux"

After getting it recommended by a friend I bought myself a Duux Whisper 2. Its really quiet and of great quality + has an app integration.

They also have air cleaners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, mobile airconditioners and heaters!

Colleagues. I don't feel like having to publish 20 disclaimers here to clarify exactly what I mean. People who want to understand my message will understand them. You should not look for too many "double-bottoms" or "hidden messages" in them. Do you have a problem with the "superficiality" of my post.... so be it.

Hey,

since this community is very much about choice of product based on where ownership and manufacturing is located, I though you might know some good video/text that explains how modern supply chains work.

I do not want just a theoretical explanation of what a supply chain is. I want some stats and examples related to present-day supply chains and their potential reshaping/disruption.

Any good suggestions for alternatives to Kindle and Audible? I'm looking at storytel, tolino, libro.fm, and also places like Casa del Libro, wondering if anyone's used them and if they're good?

Or another service?

Hi! Does anyone know a good European rateyourmusic.com alternative? They store all data in the US...

Just bumped on this word this morning on the CNN YouTube channel and it put a smile on my face. That's a great word... "Detrumpify". Maybe I'll make a t-shirt.

I have a beautiful teal blue wool/cashmere blend zip-up hoodie that's starting to show its age that I bought years ago at a big retail chain (like Devred or Jules or Celio). Unfortunately, this model isn't made anymore. It's a shame because it's the perfect mix of chic (cashmere sweater) and casual (zip-up hoodie).

Do you know any brand that makes affordable knitwear hoodies?

Thanks!

We've all already talked about switching away from google/apple maps to something like openstreetmaps, mapy, tomtom amigo, etc. But all of these services use openstreetmaps (UK non-profit) as a source and they still miss a lot of local data even for bigger cities!

If you have some spare time, think about adding a bit of data to the map with your local knowledge. There's a lot of business data missing that is on google maps like websites, phone numbers and opening hours but also stuff like parking lots and whether they're publicly accessible and free or not. Adding these makes the competition of ALL services using OSM as a source better.

I also use the mobile app https://streetcomplete.app/ and https://every-door.app/ to add data while on my walks, these make my walks more engaging and I actually take longer ones + see new places because of it. Streetcomplete also has a focus on important and easy to collect data with their default filters, and you can choose what you want to contribute.

If you really want to get into the thick of it and contribute more than just simple data you can always check out https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/How_to_contribute and see in which of the many ways you can contribute!
