It looks like not a lot of the English-speaking community has picked this up, so I wanted to do a quick write up.

So, for the headline crash: during the Hyundai N Festival N2 Cup Masters championship, a massive 4-car crash happened at an estimated 110km/h: https://youtu.be/7LcXpZj4IY8?t=16818 (timestamped; 4:40:22 if it doesn't work)

Note car 017 is the first to crash; you can see them spinning out shortly after cutting to the drone view.

Unfortunately, while nobody was killed, there are rumors that one racer has suffered 3 fractured bones.

Now for some context behind the drama:

The Hyundai N Festival

This is an annual event sponsored by Hyundai (and a few other companies like Kumho tire) and operated by "Playground" (just a separate LLC sponsored by Hyundai) where they have sponsor booths, food trucks, showcasing cars, etc. The highlight of the festival are the spec race series.

There are three classes: eN1, N1, and N2. eN1 is run with moderately modified Ioniq 5N chassis with a rollcage, suspension, brakes, widebody, and mild aero.. N1 is similarly modified, but with Elantra N instead

N2 Cup Woes

N2 is the problem child. N2 is a mostly stock Elantra N with a bucket seat, half-rollcage, steering wheel, brake pads, and a spec semislick tire.

No suspension modification of any kind, nor brake modifications are allowed. The point is that Hyundai is marketing a mostly-stock Elantra N can be driven in a wheel to wheel race and still be okay--if you're active in the US track scene, in fact it mostly is... on a track day.

Since the series began, the N2 cup was shrouded in some hot water. Almost every year, there was an incident where tires were debeading off of the wheels. While nobody has publicly blasted Hyundai for these spec rules, it's pretty obvious that stock suspension with stock roll stiffness causes way too much camber loss and thus too much rollover unless you run fairly high tire pressures. If you watch the original video and wind back to some random point in the N2 race, you will see how bad the tire rollover is.

The Brake Situation

The Hyundai Elantra N (Avante N in Korea) in the Korean domestic market comes with the usual 1-pot floating calipers that's also standard in the US. However, in Korea, a 4-pot fixed piston brake caliper supplied by HL Mando is is also available as an option.

Since last year, Hyundai has been trying to mandate this brake option as part of the N2 cup presumably to advertise it, but ever since its introduction, multiple racers have complained that after only a few laps of use, the brakes malfunction and lose all brake functionality. The common symptom is brakes going extremely squishy, absolutely no brake functionality, with "0 bars" of brake pressure shown on telemetry.

This is an example of the failure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIkyc2bjU7Y

FYI this is a tech youtuber that does this for fun, so don't judge his driving skills too much.

This concern was brought up in the N2 series and in the offseason repeatedly, and Hyundai was adamant that the mechanics haven't bled the brakes properly with race fluid, and additionally commented worse drivers are overusing the brakes and thus overheating them much easily. Conveniently, the people who crashed due to brake failure were weaker drivers. However, the cars are maintained by a few garages that support dozens of Cup cars each, so blaming the mechanics seems like a horrible cop out.

During last year's stint while the brake situation was being investigated, Hyundai recommended reverting back to the 1 pot floating caliper stock brakes for a few of the rounds, and that caused the issue to go away. The drivers did comment that the 4 pot brakes do have more brake power and that the 1 pot brakes do suffer from more brake pad fade, but said this type of total loss in brake was not seen. Ironically, before the 4P was pushed upon everyone, nobody complained about the 1P brakes.

Due to Hyundai's response, a famous youtuber that's also very competitive in the scene had declared he is not participating in this year's round 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XKV8zmHUNc

Note that in the N1 series, a 4 piston AP Racing brake kit is used.

Disaster on Round 1

The race weekend started with eN1 and N1, the "normal" races and things seemed to go smoothly.

During the N2 race, it was pretty obvious that something was wrong long before the crash.

For example, 4:35:25 shows a highly ranked racer (김태희, 006) going off-roading because she went wide after not being able to brake enough before the corner.

Right before the crash, 4:40:22 shows her going wide likely due to brake failure

Finally, disaster strikes and the 4 cars crash right after each other.

Now it looks as though some fluid was spilled because it seems highly unlikely that all four cars decided to spin out right at the same spot at the same time. This may be hearsay, but folks have claimed marshals said there were no fluids on track at that spot.

From what is circulating all across the Korean car sphere, it appears that all four cars got brake failure in that particularly harsh part of the track, since it's a downhill heavy braking zone.

This video appears to be from an uninvolved racer after that eventful race: https://youtu.be/kgHad1Uk_zA. Look at 4:08 where the racer applies full brakes and yet the car appears to not stop at all.

Aftermath

The crash happened in the N2 Cup Masters division (basically upper league), and in the following N2 Cup Challenger division race (lower league) more than 10 cars boycotted the race and one car pitted after the parade lap in protest.

Hyundai has released a statement that they are committed to a thorough investigation with full transparency.

The tech youtuber mentioned earlier has released a video after the crash mentioning that he decided not to attend the race from the get go due to Hyundai's handling of the matter since last year.

Currently the community is waiting for the investigation and is outraged at the quality of the supposed upgraded brakes that appear to be less durable than the standard floating caliper brakes.

I had a car and it had almost $7k negative equity that was paid. What was your loss on the car, like bad financing rates, high fees, negative equities and etc.

I recently bought a new 2025 Civic Si after trade in values spiked and I was able to get close to what I paid for my 2023 F150 18 months ago. I liked the truck but didn't utilize it's capabilities very often and missed having something fun to drive. In 2019 I owned a 10th gen Si for eight months and always regretted getting rid of it but never considered another Si because of the pricing madness surrounding these cars. That has passed and they can easily be had at MSRP now. I'll just say it now, an Si is in no way worth paying a markup for.

The main reason I went with an Si besides nostalgia is the cost of ownership. I don't keep cars very long and try to pick ones where I won't lose a ton a money to depreciation. I traded my '19 in for exactly 2k less than I paid and looking at used 11th gen values, it shouldn't be too much of a hit when I eventually dump this car.

I traded a Charger Scat Pack in for my original Si then had an S550 GT, 6th gen SS, Silverado 6.2, F87 M2 DCT, C7 Z51, CT4 V Blackwing (lemon law or Id probably still have this one), F150 5.0 and now this Si. Just for an idea of where my opinions come from here.

Compared to the 10th gen, the 11th gen Civic is a huge improvement in most ways. I've only driven the Si variant of each, but at least for those two the chassis is much stiffer. Which makes the car feel much more solid going down the road. Helping that feeling is the fixed suspension. The adaptive dampers in the 10th gen were great for daily driving. In Normal they were downright soft and comfortable. Sport firmed up nicely but didn't do much as far as the car being more composed. There was still a bit of body roll. The fixed suspension on the 11th gen is rougher and firmer than the Sport setting on the 10th but there is barely any body roll and it feels a lot more sports car like suspension wise instead of a warmed over economy car with nice adaptive dampers. Not that the Si is a sports car, just the suspension tuning is amazing considering what kind of car it is. I can take a cloverleaf on ramp at 55 to 60 mph and it just hugs the pavement and grips while feeling like it has more to give. It could be considered borderline too rough depending on road surface for a fun commuter but I like it. Definitely the standout performance aspect of the 11th gen Si along with the steering feel. I'm not sure I'd rate the steering as well as on the GM Alpha cars but it's close.

The other big thing you get with the Si is a real LSD up front. When you're taking one of those cloverleaf ramps you can continue to press the throttle and feel the LSD pull the car through the turn. I'm very interested to see how this is on track later this year closer to the car's limits. I haven't felt the car understeer but admittedly haven't pushed it beyond 7-8/10ths yet. Handling feel and capability feels like a nice step up from last gen. Torque steer is present if you go WOT in 1st.

The most controversial aspect of the Si is the engine. I'll be the first to admit I wish this car had a detuned version of the 2.0L from the Type R. VW does it with the GTI and R. I couldn't fault anyone for passing on this car because of the 1.5L engine. It's okay considering it's a tarted up eco motor. Gets stellar fuel economy. It can easily touch 40 mpg on the highway and I've been getting 32-33 mpg average while driving it like a rental car. It's tuned better than the 10th gen engine as well. The turbo spools quicker and lower in the rev range. You still need to be over 2,500 rpms for any power though. It pulls harder up top too. The 10th gen really died off at 5,500 rpm. The 11th, pulls solidly all the way to redline. In 3rd and 4th it feels like there's a small boost in pull starting from 5,500 to 6,500. It's barely noticeable but still a big improvement over the last car. Even with the improved tuning the Si is easily the slowest in class. It doesn't feel like an absolute dog like my Forester but you also are never impressed by the power at full throttle. It simply feels not slow. A large step down from the VW and Hyundai 2.0Ls. As well as much less power than the 2.4L in the WRX.

Another standout aspect of the Si is the shifter. It is one of the best I've ever felt. An improvement over the 10th gen's already great shifter. I'd rank it up there with the ND2 Miata and TR-6060s I've owned as far as shift feel but the clutch holds it back. It's extremely light, literally no effort has to be exerted to depress the clutch, but there's also very little feel through the pedal. Enough so you know where the bite point is but it's a far cry from an ND2 or Camaro SSs clutch. It makes stop and go traffic a breeze, not fatiguing at all besides going through the motions. The gearing is also insanely short in the 11th gen Si. 4k rpms comes up before 20 mph in 1st and just over 30 mph in 2nd. That with the low power can be annoying especially when the engine is cold. Once rolling though the gearing is great for winding it out on public roads. 2nd red lines at 54 mph, 3rd at 73. Not sure where 4th and 5th end but 110 mph is over 5k rpms in 5th.

Another improved from the 10th gen, but not improved enough aspect is rev hang. It's just ever so slightly noticeable under 4k rpms but not enough to be annoying. Full throttle to red line and it's still very present. It seems to be worse in the lower gears. I haven't measured the time but when you clutch in from 1st it feels like at least 2 or more seconds before the revs drop enough to let the clutch out into 2nd. I tuned this out on my 10th gen and am considering doing it here as well. The car felt and was significantly quicker post tune going from a 92 mph to 99 mph 1/4th mile trap speed.

Overall I'm really enjoying this car considering it cost 32k otd. While it is a big downgrade from the other performance cars I've owned I can't say I'm having any less fun while commuting to work with traffic, stop lights etc. If anything I'm enjoying it more while getting double the mpg, shifting much more and not being frustrated trying to constantly use 450+ hp. Now, taking it down an empty back road on a weekend drive it's a far cry from a 6.2L Corvette but for a daily driver and all that entails it's a solid choice.

Plans for the Si are to track the hell out of it at HPDEs. I have two scheduled this year for Summit Point and VIR and plan to do more in 2026. I also plan on picking up a Miata at some point in the near future because while I like the Si for a daily, it doesn't scratch the rwd two seater with an NA engine itch at all.

I'm glad they posted this - I always loved the 1995-2000 Avenger (and the Sebring coupe). An interesting point they brought up was how the Avenger defies precise categorization, something Chrysler has done many times with their cars. It's more upright and capacious than sports coupes like the Probe, Celica, and Eclipse (despite being heavily based on the Eclipse), but not as big as the coupe versions of regular sedans like the Accord coupe and Monte Carlo. Chrysler did a similar thing with the Cloud cars (Breeze/Stratus/Cirrus) - bigger than compacts like the Contour, 626, and Grand Am; but not as big as a Taurus, Grand Prix, or Camry. The LH (Intrepid/Vision/Concorde) cars, too - they were fullsize cars that Chrysler was pushing on both the midsize and fullsize markets.

Also, a side note, why did Don Schroeder spend three paragraphs rambling on about the Daytona and Laser? Jesus.

My parents are in a bit of a financial hole and to help them out, I gave them my paid-off 2020 model year car with 40k miles. They sold their most valuable car (they had two) to stay afloat.

Some will argue I should’ve let them consolidate down to one of their own while I kept mine, but part of the reason they are in bad financial shape is because they bought things to keep up with the joneses without budgeting for maintenance. And since they’re providing the roof over my head, I kinda have to give into their demands until I live on my own again.

Since I’m mechanically-inclined and they aren’t, they gave me their old Mercedes ML320 to drive around while I job hunt. This car has lots of deferred maintenance but it is drivable.

Now I’m thinking when I do start working again, maybe I should just go all-in and refurbish this car as much as I can to prevent tying up cash into a car payment again. It seems to be what a lot of my friends and old colleagues are doing.

Dream car for me, not just any 599 but also an HGTE, and possibly the closest to OEM a swap has been. Unlike most kits, they have the correct rod setup instead of a cable, proper damping, and the center console looks OEM.

They goes into the history on how the manual was never supposed to be in this car - the F1 gearbox had matured by then and was the first choice for most buyers, the factory firmware is relatively unfinished, the flywheel is dangerously light, and the gear indicator in the gauge cluster doesn't function.

But personally, I think this is the V12 FR Ferrari to have. Big improvement road & track over the 575M being aluminum with magneride, dicier to drive than the F12, and (IMO) better looking than either, especially if you take some inspiration from the GTO, but I'm sure the majority will disagree.

Even then, you can get a nice HGTE and swap in the manual for under ~200k. I feel that is unrivaled car for the money. and if it matters, the radio is standard din so you aren't left behind on technology either

Interesting to see what factored into the buying decision for someone who actually intended to do truck things with an EV truck*. (spoiler it's literally just battery size). Also Aging Wheels doesn't have.... a regular taste in cars.

*ok, he just wants to tow things, not haul sheet goods. The bed is still short.

Also, wow, not being able to use AC while fast charging is ridiculous. (Engineering brain probably says AC is probably being used to chill the battery, but, woof, that's a bad experience). And damn that infotainment is buggy as shit.
