Abolish is to flourish! Against the prison industrial complex and for transformative justice.

See Critical Resistance's definitions below:

The Prison Industrial Complex

The prison industrial complex (PIC) is a term we use to describe the overlapping interests of government and industry that use surveillance, policing, and imprisonment as solutions to economic, social and political problems.

Through its reach and impact, the PIC helps and maintains the authority of people who get their power through racial, economic and other privileges. There are many ways this power is collected and maintained through the PIC, including creating mass media images that keep alive stereotypes of people of color, poor people, queer people, immigrants, youth, and other oppressed communities as criminal, delinquent, or deviant. This power is also maintained by earning huge profits for private companies that deal with prisons and police forces; helping earn political gains for "tough on crime" politicians; increasing the influence of prison guard and police unions; and eliminating social and political dissent by oppressed communities that make demands for self-determination and reorganization of power in the US.

Abolition

PIC abolition is a political vision with the goal of eliminating imprisonment, policing, and surveillance and creating lasting alternatives to punishment and imprisonment.

From where we are now, sometimes we can't really imagine what abolition is going to look like. Abolition isn't just about getting rid of buildings full of cages. It's also about undoing the society we live in because the PIC both feeds on and maintains oppression and inequalities through punishment, violence, and controls millions of people. Because the PIC is not an isolated system, abolition is a broad strategy. An abolitionist vision means that we must build models today that can represent how we want to live in the future. It means developing practical strategies for taking small steps that move us toward making our dreams real and that lead us all to believe that things really could be different. It means living this vision in our daily lives.

Abolition is both a practical organizing tool and a long-term goal.

Welcome to Maple Music, a community on the Lemmy.ca instance focused on bringing attention to Canadian music and musicians!

Like everything else, Canada has a rich music culture, spanning from the traditional music of the First Nations to a unique spot in the Punjabi music scene, a rich variety of folk performers to the big names in pop, and established underground music cultures such as the Edmonton hiphop and rap scene to the metal scene in the Atlantic provinces.

This community allows for postings of Canadian music news, covering anything from the local scene to world-renowned names such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Celine Dion. It also allows for sharing Canadian musicians you wish to give a spotlight to, individual songs and albums by Canadian artists you enjoy, and even a bit of Canadian music history seeing how poorly documented some Canadian music history can be at times.

As with any community, here are some rules to follow when engaging with this Lemmy community:

  1. All rules of the host instance (Lemmy.ca) are to be followed at all times.

  2. Posts should follow the following format: "Musician - Title [Genre] (Year) (track length, optional)"

  3. No shaming of music tastes. Mumble rap is not for everyone, and neither is country or dubstep. Avoid all "real music" type comments. Refrain from downvoting music that is not your taste, everyone should feel welcome regardless of the genre you enjoy.

  4. Do not encourage music piracy. Much of the musicians and music shared here are likely small independent acts that deserve fiscal support. If money is an issue, please look into free and/or Creative Commons releases, a list of such titles will be made and built on as the community grows.

  5. All posts must be related to the Canadian music scene to some extent. News about Taylor Swift will be removed. News about Taylor Swift having a Canadian tour will be kept.

  6. Please avoid spam. Rather than make individual posts for each song by a musician you like, instead make a singular post bringing attention to the musician.

  7. AI music posts will be deleted. This community is made to support Canadian talent, not those who mooch off the talent of others for personal gain.

Intelligence reports from preppers around the world.

1. What are you seeing that affects your prepping? Post should be based on something you're actually seeing / experiencing locally. If it is outside of your area / is speculation, prepare to have current and substantial evidence such as multiple and neutral links as to not have the content removed.

2. Post title must have a general description, location / region plus flair. We're not asking or wanting exact locations, just a general idea of where you're talking about in the beginning of the title. It greatly helps people read / filter posts.

3. If your post isn't from your own eyes but affects you, it is encouraged to have evidence. (Links) Recent and up to date links, benefit all and help others understand and contribute to your post.

4. Unconstructive comments may lead to removals or bans. We are here to gather intel, not hate. This includes personal attacks, name calling, pushing politics, religion, racism, sexism, condoning / avocation of violence, trolling, ill will towards others and so on.

5. If you feel that the intel is wrong, link your own recent and relevant intel on the direct subject. If you feel the need to argue back, calmly do so with recent and relevant evidence on the subject. We do not care who you are, or which side you're on, we seek truth and transparency through sheer informational evidence.

If your view isn't backed up, (and at this point likely causing an issue) it may be subject to removal.

User may have a chance to research and find intel to restore their comment after contacting a moderator... Don't make a habit of this.

Discussion and News forum for all things video game emulation related, or tangentially. Platform agnostic. Mobile is welcome too. We'll keep it loose, but more focused on emulation. Piracy discussion is allowed, that's one reason we're on this domain.

A General Discussion will be stickied for the community to chat in about whatever. Staying on topic isn't important in any GD stickies.

Rules

#1: Obey our domain rules first and foremost.

  • TheDude abides. Try to be like The Dude here.

#2: Mundane Tech Support/Game Sourcing Questions need to be kept to the stickied posts, unless it's something novel/interesting others might want to see.

  • if the community grows, the stickies should be renewed monthly.

#3: Unless it's at least tangentially relevant to emulation, no politics. Don't get your toque in a knot.

#4: Be nice, and consider reporting an offending hoser of #4 instead of responding to mean people to begin with.

Inspired by negative impressions of /r/ROMS:

#5a: Strive to be polite & patient with noobs asking questions.

  • We all start somewhere.

#5b: Doesn't mean be a doormat.

  • Report rude, unjustifiably entitled, or ungrateful users asking questions too.

What is Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.

Cyberpunk characteristics include:

  • Dystopian city setting where mega-corporations rule
  • Full integration of technology into society, featuring cybernetic implants
  • Outsider protagonists (punks) who often are very familiar with the technology around them
  • Hard boiled detective and film noir vibes and influence
  • Themes dabbling in trans-humanism, existentialism, and what it means to be human.

Things that you’re in awe at the size of.

Absolute Unit: an Animal, Public Figure or Object who is larger than one would normally expect.

Rules

Absolute units, not normal units. More detailed definitions here

No creepshots / fat shaming pics allowed. Mainly the subjects are animals, but big foods and objects, like statues, are also allowed. If you are submitting humans, only public figures are allowed, and not only to showcase that they are fat, they must be also large in stature; no harassment or creepshots; fat-shaming is strictly prohibited.

while mild NSFW stuff is allowed (as long as its put in it's own tag when posting), anything more than that (and borderline NSFL) is straight up banned. This includes stuff that is sexual in nature, gory, anything not very palpable for the eyes.

Don't forget to follow the rules in your server

If you dislike RSS Bot communities please block this one.

It’s FOSS is an award-winning web portal that focuses on Open Source in general and Linux in particular.

It’s FOSS was founded in mid-2012 as a hobby project to help desktop Linux users and spread awareness about Linux and open source. As the popularity of It’s FOSS grew worldwide, it was incorporated as an independent company CHMOD777 Media Tech in mid-2018. The term chmod 777 is inspired from the Linux command chmod with parameter 777 which signifies access (to knowledge) for everyone.

Ask anything you would consider too vague or too stupid. It is not supposed to be very refined or thought through, it can as well be a string of random symbols, just tell us how to read them. Consider it a very serious questions community, where questions most definitely are not serious, or the other way round. WE APPRECIATE ABSURDISM. WE APPRECIATE CREATIVITY. WE THRIVE ON ANSWERING GENUINE CURIOSITY!

These could be questions which you think a 5 year or 10 year old would ask, but you are not 5/10 year old and you don't have anybody to ask.

Rules:

  • Standard Netiquette reference - TL;DR - just be civil

  • Lemmy Instance Guidelines - TL;DR - just be civil

  • Post format is simple - it should be a question. You can add additional context to your delight, for example, what do you expect the answer to be, or how do you think one should try to answer it. Questions can be any any language (preferably english) but do what you like, just tag the post appropriately (you can select language while creating post). NSFW is fine as well, but please tag appropriately.

  • Stupid in a general sense - Ideally questions should not be stupid because they use fancy words. For example, if someone asks - why do we not use ferritic steels in cold temperatures? This question is stupid to all metaallurgy people because almost all of them know of ductile to brittle transition. But how many of us are metallurgists? (or have taken some crystal structure courses). They can be niche, we are not against questions that only some of us understand, but if you think the questions are too specific, give us additional context. WE ARE WELL SERVING SERVERS!

  • Academic Integrity - try to answer questions just the best way you can. if you think a alphabet is good, just do it, if you think.

  • New Rules maybe added in future - to which all of you also agree to while creating any post. YOU MUST OBEY A CONTRACT INDEFINITELY. BY POSTING/COMMENTING, YOU ARE CONSIDERED TO BE AGREEING THIS CONTRACT. IF YOU FAIL TO UPHOLD TO THE CONTRACT, YOU SHALL SACRIFICE YOUR FIRST BORN CHILD OR BEAR THE CONSEQUENCES OF ENRAGING THE GODS WHO SHALL PUT A CURSE OPEN THOU (or the subsequent ones in case you already sacrificed one, we are accepting in that sense, we would not be cursing your lineage/subsequent lives and stuff. If you do not have kids, then have them. The kid should be born or Feb 29 of any year, and must be 32 years and 42 days old at the time of sacrifice. Please do remember to contact us for the birthday parties, we can bring the best food and entertainment (rated the 17th best party organiser, by my friends list of - best birthday organisers who were born on 29th feb). Also, most of the blessed servants of god (read moderators) are very kind, and can "pardon" your crimes, for appropriate gifts).

This is a community just for some fun based on the spurious correlations website made by a university student. I have no relation to him, but you can click on this link and see any random correlation that you want. I'm going to post some of these for Lemmy people for awhile, until I get bored. https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious/random If you do actually follow the link you will see not only the graph but an ai generated explanation and an AI scholarly paper that supports these correlations. who knows what is going to happen when the AIs pickup these hundreds of scholarly papers and put them in their training data.

for things that are not interesting at all

unofficial clone of r/notinteresting

What does this mean?

it's not immediately obvious what the point of this community is, so here is an explanation of the intended content:

basically the point is to post something that, at face value, is not really interesting (uninteresting), but you sneak in a little detail that makes it more intriguing, but the point is to act like it’s nothing at all, while the people in the comments get weirded out trying to understand what’s going on or just meme about it

there are a few rules that follow along this premise:
  • The post should not be interesting

    • This rule is just for posts, not for comments.
  • No Racism and Hate speech

    • Racism, homophobia, and hate speech will be removed.
  • No NSFW content

    • NSFW content is allowed, as long as you put it under it's tag. But straight up porn, gore, and borderline NSFL will get removed, and the poster will get banned.
  • No Blank Images or really low effort posts

    • Posts that are just a solid color or REALLY low effort will be removed. An example of what counts as "really low effort" is only posting a picture of a bodypart.
  • No contextless selfies

    • No posts that are just a selfie with a random title. If you are doing something in the picture that's one thing, but just a selfie of you smiling at the camera and the title is "I had pizza for lunch" or anything like that, it will be removed.

Hope you enjoy this community, and have fun!
