Was anyone else taught this, and were you constantly living in fear of your own subconscious thoughts?

This is the root of my scrupulosity. The idea that I was being watched all the time.

"If The Saviour Stood Beside You" and "Dearest Children, God is Near You" both have lyrics that fed the notion that I was being constantly watched. For a time, I was even afraid to shower when I was a pre teen. I would wear a swimming costume because I knew I had to be modest and God could always see me.

Such dangerous and damaging teachings.

Leaving the church was a big decision for me that I did not take lightly. And based on the discussions I see here on r/exmormon I would assume most of you went through a similar process. But at work I've been talking with a lot of the other exmormons who I expected to relate to and have common experiences and opinions with. But they don't seem to have put that much thought into leaving, saying it's "just not for me" but don't really disbelieve it either. And I wonder if these are the people who give exmos the reputation of being "lazy learners" who "fall away from the church". Do you guys know people like this? Do you think it's more common for people to "fall away" than it is to make a conscious effort to leave? I have one sibling and a few close friends who are like me and tend to analyze all the aspects of the church and are very deliberate in our choices but it sets a different expectation for the exmos I meet in the wild because they just don't seem to relate. What are your thoughts?

I believe the new hymn book is supposed to be out in two more years. There are two hymns that will either be gone, or have word changes. "If You Could Hie to Kolob" and "Praise to the Man".

Even though I think the sound of "If You Could Hie To Kolob" is pretty cool, how can this hymn continue when the MFMC is trying to rebrand as traditional Christian? There are at least two lines that won't make the cut. Maybe they will just take them out.

"Find the generation where godS began to be".

Plural godS?? Gods evolved? We can become gods, too? YIKES

Then there's this gem:

"There is no end to race"

Wow, racist enough?! According to the MAGA crowd, I thought in the celestial kingdom everyone ends up white??

Then there's "Praise to the Man"

I predict the MFMC will downplay the Joseph worship in this hymn to try to appear like JESUS is actually the most important person in mormonism. We all know who it really is... Joseph Smith. Jesus is a bit player. Hopefully this song will be gone.

Can you think of others that will be gone, or have word changes?

yesterday my mom went to the temple grounds to help with landscaping/weeding (idk what tbh) at the temple grounds. when my mom was explaining all she did (it was a lot) i told her “you think the church could just hire people to do that with all the money they have” she then started talking about all the charities the church does around the world and how she thinks it’s a “privilege” to do service for the church. it’s just wrong how the church gets away with that stuff only to promise blessings in return. i get that it can be a nice feeling to help people out and serve around you, i just don’t think it’s fair that all members just willingly do that stuff for free without batting an eye lol.

also on a side note, she said it was soooo peaceful there, but i’ve literally had friends who micro dose and go there to purposefully see weird shit lol. the energy coming from that building is creepy.

but yeah anyways…

I hope this doesn’t come across as disrespectful or dismissive of anyone’s experience—this is just something I’ve observed and wanted to share. From what I’ve seen, many of the people who remain active in the Church tend to be wealthy, successful, and part of large, seemingly happy families. Interestingly, some of them are fully aware of the historical and contemporary issues within the Church but still choose to stay.

In contrast, I’ve noticed that many who end up leaving seem to come from the upper-middle class or lower socioeconomic backgrounds—people like myself, who are just starting out in adult life after finishing school.

I’m genuinely curious—has anyone else noticed this kind of pattern, or is it just a reflection of my own limited perspective?

A few have you have noticed that sometimes contributor to this subreddit and ExMormon parody marvel--Cultural Hall--has removed his YouTube channel.

A few people have reached out to me directly to find out what happened because Cultch and I had a livestream scheduled last night to continue breaking down the Midnight Mormons/Ward Radio debate with Radio Free Mormon.

I figured it would be easier to provide this information once here for anyone interested, rather than answer a ton of individual questions or allow people to speculate on what happened.

Here's what Cultch was comfortable with me reporting on why his channel won't be returning: "online Mormon folks went over the line messing with my family and professional life." Speaking to who is responsible would be nothing more than speculation.

This is just my personal reminder that there are real people, real families, and real lives behind these YouTube channels and podcasts. Please allow this to guide your online behaviors and actions. This Rando, at least, will sincerely miss Cultch's unique blend of humor, irreverence, and compassion.

Anyone else find this hymn creepy as fuck? How is this NOT prophet worship?

For those unfamiliar or never-MO’s, I’ll put the lyrics below:

  1. Praise to the man who communed with Jehovah! Jesus anointed that Prophet and Seer. Blessed to open the last dispensation, Kings shall extol him, and nations revere.

Chorus: Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven! Traitors and tyrants now fight him in vain. Mingling with Gods, he can plan for his brethren; Death cannot conquer the hero again.

  1. Praise to his mem’ry, he died as a martyr; Honored and blest be his ever great name! Long shall his blood, which was shed by assassins, Plead unto heav’n while the earth lauds his fame.

Chorus

  1. Great is his glory and endless his priesthood. Ever and ever the keys he will hold. Faithful and true, he will enter his kingdom, Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.

Chorus

  1. Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven; Earth must atone for the blood of that man. Wake up the world for the conflict of justice. Millions shall know “Brother Joseph” again.

Chorus

There’s so much there that is so weird or antithetical to Christianity that if I were to write all my commentary, I’d be here all day.

Curious to see what y’all’s thoughts are!

Looking back, I remember joking with a kid about exorcisms when I found my dad's leader handbook, and my mom saying, "Oh that's very rare". But fast forward a dozen years, I found myself on my mission in another country, and the stress causing me to have my very first focal seizures, usually while sleeping. All I knew is that I was having terrible night terrors and waking up with headaches, and completely zoned out and exhausted the rest of the day.

My MP, who was from Utah, and should have known better (I was in Europe, not a third world country), proceeds over the course of several weeks to attempt to cast demons out of me. I realize now what a complete ego trip that would have been for him. He ended up sending me home under the assumption I had unrepented sins allowing Satan to have more hold, and said when I can finally get more sleep I can come back.

To this day, I've felt quite alone in this experience and have never known anyone to have had to go through the same.

BYU has been the only option in my family for generations. Now that I don't believe in the church I don't know where to begin in guiding her in this important decision. She figured out the con about the same time I did and would like to leave church activity when she leaves home. She is leaning towards a Utah school but I wonder if that's just because of familiarity. Will a Utah school be toxic church-wise? Would it be easier for her to find her new tribe at a Utah school and fit in culturally with a high exmo population?

Other relevant info:

We live in the west (not Utah), she has strong academics, politically liberal.

https://www.ksl.com/article/51318185/mobile-temple-recommends-soon-available-for-latter-day-saints

Apparently the church is going to roll out temple reccomends for your phone. The number of people in the comments who are virtue signalling about how they leave their phone in the car while at the temple or even at Sunday service seems very on par for the holier than thou moridor.

I was having a somewhat good theological debate with a Mormon friend and after an hour or two of texting I kinda just agreed and said at the end of the day we believe what we believe but he kept just going on and saying there's proof of god and all this. like bro I do not care anymore and it was almost like he was trying to convert me 🤦

if I as an agnostic atheist tried to unpromptedly convert him to stop believing he would be pissed and I'm not gonna do that cuz he's happy with his religion but I was not happy in it so I left. shit just feels disrespectful to me, sorry I'm lowk ranting but I'm sure some of yall can relate 😭

TW: Abuse

Update to my last post.

I've been reaching out to the stake president & bishop expressing concern about an abuser in the ward being given a calling that will occasionally allow him access to children.

The stake president responded this evening, saying that he is unwilling to further discuss the matter over text. The only way he will continue the discussion is in-person. He also said that I'm making assumptions about the abuser's calling (ward missionary) that he wants to clarify, and lastly he said that he has questions for me that he will only ask in-person.

Not sure what to think of this. I don't really want to meet in-person. Is there any way I can possibly get him to keep it on text?

Growing up in a mormon household, did you ever feel/ sense/ see something paranormal in your home for which you had to get the church's help? Pleeeease share how it went down!

Was there an exorcism- but mormon style? Did they cite the book of mormon with references about dispelling spirits? Etc etc ...

Exmo here, and since this crossed my mind I can't stop thinking of it. Omggggggg just share it already!!!

Original Title: Turns out that my entire perception of reality was based around the teachings of a man preying on young girls and other men’s wives. It is disturbing that in 2025, LDS people still sing “Praise to the Man” during services

If someone lies and says they are a full tithe payer when they haven’t paid any tithing and says they pay directly to Salt Lake, is there a way for the bishop or stake president to track or look it up? Or if you say you donated stock, could they look that up?
