The freegames community has been going for a year and a half now, probably time I updated the info.

What to post

This is a place to post limited-time giveaways of full video games that are then yours to keep forever at no cost. Please use the search to check what you're posting hasn't already been posted, and start your posts with [Source] or [Store via Source] so that people can ignore giveaways they're not interested in. For example, if Fanatical were giving away a Steam key for Pong, I'd title the post [Steam via Fanatical] Pong.

I post deals as I find them (sometimes spread out over a few days or bundled together so it doesn't get too noisy) but feel free to post them if you find them first.

If you have keys that you'd like to give away then !giftofgaming@lemmy.world is a better place to post.

Forever-Free Friday

The main exception to the limited-time giveaways only rule is for the occasional posting of games which are always free. On Fridays you can post a game that's permanently free if you think it's worth showcasing to everyone. Maybe it's a FOSS project, maybe it's a game that's gone free-to-play, just make sure that the post starts with [Forever-Free Friday] and that it's something worth playing and not just the publishers trying the freemium model instead!

No such thing as a free lunch

Nothing is ever completely free, and there's a definite hierarchy to the kinds of giveaways posted here:

  1. Free open-source software is pretty hard to beat, it's the free-est lunch you can get!
  2. Indies being given away directly by their creators on sites like itch.io, they may ask you to pay what you want or message you about their other games but that's about it
  3. DRM-free storefronts like GOG, you can download the installer and keep it forever but obviously they're hoping that you'll start using their site for making actual purchases too
  4. Steam, Epic Games, IndieGala, Fanatical, Microsoft, Google Play, etc. will offer freebies which could theoretically disappear at any point (this doesn't happen often, but always remember that you don't really "own" most digital items), they also hope that giving freebies will encourage you to spend money on other games of theirs
  5. Subscriptions like Amazon Prime Gaming cost money but you do get to keep the games even after you cancel
    • They offer free trials (supposedly only requiring a unique email) so you can sign up, claim all the games you want, then cancel
    • This is basically where I draw the line as you can still keep games forever if you're willing to jump through the required hoops
  6. Subscriptions like Netflix, GamePass, PS+ and Switch Online are more like renting games, you lose access to them when you stop paying so I don't count them as free games even if you are somehow able to access them for free
  7. Freemium/pay-to-win games which you can play for free as a second-class citizen don't count, and they generally have enough marketing budget that you're aware of them without the need to have them posted here!

We're all adults here and I hope you don't need to be told to be wary of blindly installing dodgy software or not to support companies you don't like. If you don't want to see giveaways from a particular source and you use a Lemmy client which supports filters then you can block specific strings from showing, for instance if you didn't want to see anything from Amazon then you could hide the string Prime].

Keep it civil and keep it chill!

[Itch] Splithead, indie horror (terrortalesproductions.itch.io)
submitted 5 hours ago by smeg@feddit.uk to c/freegames@feddit.uk

Splithead is a first person psychological horror game inspired by classic Slender style survival.

Lost in a dark forest, you must search for scattered pages while avoiding a presence. Staying too close for too long causes reality to break, distorting your vision and overwhelming your senses.

The entity becomes dangerous when it is on screen and nearby. Looking at it for too long builds exposure, distorting your vision and audio. If exposure reaches its limit, you die.

Occasionally, a head intrusion may occur. During this event, Splithead forces itself into your view and traps you in a struggle. To survive, you must rapidly thrash your camera to break free before the exposure overwhelms you.

There are no weapons and no combat. Survival depends entirely on awareness, movement, and knowing when to stop looking.

The Maze is a game where the main objective is to escape from a maze that is generated entirely procedurally (randomly). In this maze, you will find a large number of secrets and enemies.

Each wall may or may not be decorated with a unique decoration, ranging from a sword, bow, or shield to a candelabra, torch, or armor. The armor decoration is special, since for each body part (helmet, chestplate, belt, pants, boots, and hands—left and right) one of the 16 available equipment pieces may appear, giving a probability of 0.0000003726% that all 8 pieces belong to the same “set.” In addition, you can interact with these armors to equip them.

The floor and ceiling may also appear modified. The floor has 2 types of traps: one that always activates when you step on it, and another that activates when stepped on, but can be avoided by jumping or changing direction.

The maze also includes moving walls that can shift both upward and downward. There are also 2 types of doors: the normal one, which can be opened without any requirement, and the colored ones, which require finding the corresponding key to open.

You will also encounter 6 enemies, divided into 2 categories: passive and aggressive. Among the passive enemies are bats, which move from the beginning to the end of the maze; the orc, which moves back and forth between fixed waypoints; and the spider, which can travel on the ceiling or floor and moves to random locations within the maze. On the other hand, the aggressive enemies include the ghost, which appears after 5 minutes of gameplay and chases the player; the skeleton, which roams the maze randomly, attacking and chasing when near the player; and the golem, which behaves similarly but follows waypoints. All enemies have different versions of themselves and spawn randomly.

As for the player, they have animations for 8 directions at 3 different speeds (walking, running, and sprinting), 3 different idles, as well as jumping and turning animations, along with sound effects for walking and jumping.

Finally, there are 5 ambient music tracks that play continuously and randomly, along with a small menu where you can choose the maze size and the central area size.

Paradise Island, a world outside reality. There’s been a murder only "investigation freak" Lady Love Dies can solve. Investigate and interrogate in this open world adventure. You can accuse anyone, but you’ll have to prove your case. It’s up to you to decide who's guilty.

An island outside of reality.

A rogue human civilization hoping to resurrect dead alien gods. A murder behind locked doors.

‎Paradise is an island that regenerates every few millennia.

The psychic power that the alien worshipers within release into the universe is meant to feed and eventually resurrect their fallen deities. But this force also attracts undesired interest from demons, who eventually corrupt each island — until a new alternate reality is birthed by the Council.

‎The system isn’t perfect, but it will be one day — on Perfect 25, the next island-to-be.

But on the eve of rebirth, the Council is murdered and Paradise is killed.

In the aftermath, the “investigation freak” Lady Love Dies is summoned from exile to find the culprit. This is the crime to end all crimes.

What are the facts? What are the truths? Are they the same?

The Deed is a game in which you must commit a murder and then, through a process of making the right choices and planting the appropriate evidence, convince the authorities of your innocence and somebody else's guilt. The stand-alone expansion Dynasty offers three new scenarios based on this original concept.

Taking place in three different eras, each of these new scenarios allows you to explore the sordid ancestry of the Bruce family as you take control of a character who aims to commit a murder and escape free of suspicion by framing one of the other characters in the game. You will explore a 15th century English castle and a wild west frontier saloon, before finally returning to Dunshiel House fifty years prior to the events of the original game.

Just as in The Deed, every decision you make can influence the outcome and lead to one of many possible endings, which are even more varied and numerous this time. There are many ways to do the deed, multiple pieces of evidence to use to your advantage and a wide selection of characters to frame for your crime.

Explore the Setting

This expansion aims to provide richer and more varied environments which immerse the player in the various historical time periods of the game, whether it's Medieval England under the reign of Henry IV, a violent frontier town in the Old West or a grand old estate in the Victorian era.

Meet the Characters

Each scenario contains a number of non-player characters, some of whom are based on real historical figures, and almost all of whom can be framed for the murder. The conversation system has been developed and improved, offering a greater amount of control for the player and more branching options which will lead to a more unique experience every time.

Choose the Murder Weapon

Choose from various murder weapons appropriate to the time period in which you find yourself, whether it's a medieval greatsword, a pair of household scissors or a good old-fashioned six-shooter. Figure out which method of murder is likely to point towards a character other than yourself.

Plant the Evidence

Items of evidence can be used in multiple ways to raise the suspicion of the authorities. Think carefully about which piece of evidence could be used to frame which characters, depending on where you plant it.

Face the Authorities

There's no question that the stakes are higher this time. Life in prison is one thing - but what about finding yourself on the headsman's block or strung up at the gallows for a grisly public execution?

Life could be brutal in the olden times, and so could the death of a convicted criminal. Can you manage to do the deed while also avoiding such a terrible fate?

Free for only today.

Weird West legends meet eldritch horror in BLOOD WEST, an immersive stealth FPS. Become the Undead Gunslinger, doomed to roam the barren lands until he finds the means to purge their curse and free his soul. No, this isn’t your typical Wild West desperado redemption arc. This is a damnation arc.

The Canyons, the Swamp, and the Mountains. Each swarming with abominable monsters and unholy demons, these are open-ended worlds for you to explore freely at your own pace. It will take the player over 20 hours on average to complete all three scenarios, and over 35 if they want to see everything the barren lands have to offer.

Blood West is a stealth FPS inspired by the genre classics such as the Thief series (whose fans will be happy to hear the voice of Stephen Russell, the actor voicing the master-thief Garrett, returning here as the protagonist), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, or - from the contemporary catalog - Hunt: Showdown. The gameplay rewards the careful approach: scouting the area, stalking your enemies, and striking from the shadows. Can you figure out a way to clear a fort full of ghouls and monsters without raising an alarm?
