So.... I went to a DIY market today and found this guy selling restored and modded Gameboys. Couldn't get over the cuteness factor here-- a Gameboy Pocket modded with the IPS backlit screen of a Gameboy Light Pokémon, with two USB-C rechargeable batteries included. It came with the game, which I test played and loved.

I then randomly drew four games, the whole thing coming down to about 95 euros.... yes... I know that I totally overpaid, but I'm brand new to the modding market and otherwise don't have the drive or time to find reliable sources in my area. Very happy to get One Piece, Tetris, and Doraemon (but not the meaningless horse race betting game) in the draw, but it's all in Japanese! Will have to figure this out.

I waa super excited to see GBA Rhythm Heaven offered from mint condition to second hand, but the guy was selling them for at least 22 euros and I had to get a Gameboy Advance to play it.... so I guess that's that for now.

I hope that with this ridiculous purchase, I won't be tempted to buy Playdate.

My most recent build. Removed the CPU and RAM from a very corroded board.

My post on Console Repair has some closer pictures of the soldering.

Hi all! I recently learned about the tactile button mod for the GBA, but I’m seeing that it’s possible to hit all 4 direction buttons at once unless you put some cardboard under the membrane, but Mahko states that makes the d pad difficult to press over long periods of time.

Has there been any update made for this mod to fix the issue with it?

Installed this clock mod (over and under) into my SuperGameboy CPU modded Dmg. Now I can play games up to 1.5x faster with that faster boot time.

ModRetro is bringing back cartridges! They're publishing newly developed GameBoy and GameBoy Color games, manufacturing actual cartridges, and selling them in stores. In addition to making the Chromatic, a pretty darn good FPGA Game Boy Color compatible system, they're making a line of new games on cartridges. These titles not only work on the Chromatic but also on anything that can play GameBoy or GameBoy Color. I review all six launch titles, including:

  • Tales in Monsterland DX: A charming platformer with RPG elements.
  • Dragonyhm: A delightful turn-based RPG with exploration and puzzle-solving.
  • Toki Tori Ultimate Edition: A challenging puzzle-platformer.
  • Patchy Matchy: A fast-paced puzzle game.
  • Traumatarium Penitent: A hardcore, resource-management RPG.
  • In the Dark 2: A sci-fi adventure with logic puzzles.

Orange FM – Radio in a cart (shop.insidegadgets.com)

Orange FM is a cartridge for Game Boy that allows you to listen to FM radio stations through your Game Boy’s speakers (on certain models, see compatibility chart below). It features an internal antenna for strong signals, as well as support for external antennas connected to the cart’s audio jack. In addition to mono audio output through the console, the cart delivers stereo audio through the cart’s audio jack to connected headphones or speakers.

Just drag and drop some images into it and download a ROM for your Game Boys without installing anything. It runs locally in any modern browser.

Why have one oled when you can have two? The regulator shows the current power voltage and ma usage.

This is an open source project that adds a GBC processor and screen into a DMG shell. Have to say, I really enjoy the weight. The github can be found here.

They tried to claim that they weren't ending the game boy line.......welp. Still waiting on that Game Boy Advance sucsessor any day now....

We all know the DS was the next Game Boy. WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST CALL IT THAT??? The original ones even played GBA, GBC, and GB games for fucks sake!

The DS WAS a Game Boy. That's it. That's the end of the story.

The 369 in 1 can be reflashed with the Nightrap rom. Funny thing too, the bootleg shell feels higher quality.

My A button was requiring a harder press for the input to be registered than normal, so I opened up my GBC and noticed this transfer on the PCB. I guess years as a child hard holding A to improve pokemon catch rates had caught up. What's the best way to remove this? Isopropyl alcohol and cotton bud?

Limited Run Games did preorders last April fools 2023. No actual gameplay, just the movies in quality similar to the GBA video carts.

Rom is 256mb. It doesn't load in the Mister, OpenFPGA, or mGBA.

Won this manual at a Good Will charity auction. Just wanted to share it here in hopes that it would make some of you smile as big as I did!

This game was so much fun in highschool. I never purchased the Lost Age way back then, but I saved my password for decades with the intent to pick it up eventually. I was pretty ecstatic about the games being released on Switch Virtual Console, but playing The Lost Age on the Switch... It just isn't the same.

So I just started playing it on a modded 2DS. I have decided this is the console I'm going to finish the series with. Definitely better dpad (and joystick), comfortable to hold, and maybe the smaller screen helps it appear more like the original games.

Bought this little kit for a few dollars on aliexpress awhile ago figuring it was an interesting project. I would not recommend it and I've already revered back to stock.

  1. It makes the cartridge bulge.
  2. The long term reliability is questionable (my chip seemed like a rebadge).
  3. It will not work correctly on the analogue pocket (and possibly the FunnyPlaying FPGA GBC).

Also I wouldn't use clips like this for the battery when you can use the HDR retainer. This was done years ago and I don't have any more of those on hand to replace it.

DS Lite? Yes. DSi XL? For sure. 2DS XL, 3DS and its New and XL variants? You bet. But not a single 2DS aftermarket shell. Single backplates are sold here and there but not the whole assembly.

What gives? Is the 2DS really that niche compared to its siblings?

Fun project to convert a Japanese cartridge to a Flashcart I assembled a while back. https://github.com/JRodrigoTech/FLASH-ROM-Adapter-for-GameBoy

If you haven’t given this romhack a shot, it’s worth a go. It tries to recreate the original 1997 demo of Pokemon Gold/Silver from Nintendo SpaceWorld.

Link to STL file here

The ReBoi kit promises to replace the Game Boy’s guts and display with no soldering required, but you’ll need to source the Game Boy and Raspberry Pi yourself.

Create a bootable, working Pokémon game by recording it crash multiple times.

Not the actual use case for this extender, but I think it's fun that it works on real hardware.
