Someone made a tool to remove CSAM content automatically: https://github.com/db0/lemmy-safety

You can upload images to a Lemmy instance without anyone knowing that the image is there if the admins are not regularly checking their pictrs database.

To do this, you create a post on any Lemmy instance, upload an image, and never click the "Create" button. The post is never created but the image is uploaded. Because the post isn't created, nobody knows that the image is uploaded.

You can also go to any post, upload a picture in the comment, copy the URL and never post the comment. You can also upload an image as your avatar or banner and just close the tab. The image will still reside in the server.

You can (possibly) do the same with community icons and banners.

Why does this matter?

Because anyone can upload illegal images without the admin knowing and the admin will be liable for it. With everything that has been going on lately, I wanted to remind all of you about this. Don't think that disabling cache is enough. Bad actors can secretly stash illegal images on your Lemmy instance if you aren't checking!

These bad actors can then share these links around and you would never know! They can report it to the FBI and if you haven't taken it down (because you did not know) for a certain period, say goodbye to your instance and see you in court.

Only your backend admins who have access to the database (or object storage or whatever) can check this, meaning non-backend admins and moderators WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MONITOR THESE, and regular users WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REPORT THESE.

Aren't these images deleted if they aren't used for the post/comment/banner/avatar/icon?

NOPE! The image actually stays uploaded! Lemmy doesn't check if the images are used! Try it out yourself. Just make sure to copy the link by copying the link text or copying it by clicking the image then "copy image link".

How come this hasn't been addressed before?

I don't know. I am fairly certain that this has been brought up before. Nobody paid attention but I'm bringing it up again after all the shit that happened in the past week. I can't even find it on the GitHub issue tracker.

I'm an instance administrator, what the fuck do I do?

Check your pictrs images (good luck) or nuke it. Disable pictrs, restrict sign ups, or watch your database like a hawk. You can also delete your instance.

Good luck.

This time in Gabon. I don't know much at all about Gabon's politics but from doing some quick reading it appears to be yet another ousting of a French puppet just like in Niger.

"Gabon military officers claim power, say election lacked credibility Television announcement comes shortly after state election body announces incumbent Ali Bongo had won a third term as president.

A group of senior military officers has gone on national television in Gabon saying they have seized power because elections held over the weekend were not credible.

The officers, appearing on Gabon24 in the early hours of Wednesday morning, said they had cancelled the elections, dissolved all state institutions and closed the country’s borders.

They said they represented all security and defence forces of Gabon.

The announcement came shortly after the state election body said President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won a third term in office in Saturday’s disputed elections.

“In the name of the Gabonese people … we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers said.

The Gabonese Election Centre said Bongo had secured 64.27 percent of the vote compared with 30.77 percent for his main challenger Albert Ondo Ossa, after a process beset by delays.

Nothing confounds me more than the droves of "libertarian socialists" and "anarcho-communists" who insist on clinging to the world's least relevant ideologies. Speaking as someone who used to be an anarchist (before I became old enough to drink), I can identify at least part of the reason being a vehement anti-Soviet and Sinophobic worldview cultivated by decades of malicious propaganda.

But I don't think this critique gets to the core of their beliefs. The true operative factor is twofold. On the one hand, anticommunist "socialists" avoid the consequences that come from aligning oneself with actually-existing socialism. This boils down to the simple fact that no one, especially not the powerful, are actually threatened by western leftist "movements" which spend all of their time and resources owning the red fash tankies online. Functionally, radlibs and liberals are on the same team aside from some nominal points of disagreement. This is clear enough from the Ukraine news cycle and its predictable effects on the minds of these terminal losers.

But on the other hand, every single anarchist "revolution" ending in defeat and failure has advantages for those who wish to profess to the ideology. Within radlib mythology, the fundamental failures of anarchist movements can all be blamed on external sabotage. This, of course, is exactly what we have been shouting from the rooftops for decades upon decades. And yet this seemingly obvious point of weakness shields anarchists from having to prove that their ideas actually work. If you have no surviving socialist project, there's nothing to criticize.

Obviously, this is in actuality a serious problem for every anarchist. When all "anarchist" socialist states are fanciful stories of flawless communism sealed in the distant past, there is no scientific socialism and no historical progress along those lines. Apparently, this suits them just fine, though it does make them deeply unserious.

Hey comrades, in a discussion in another thread I've realized that I'm still extremely under-informed about all the socialist movements that exist across the countries of Africa. For instance, a comrade brought up Angola and my first thought was that they're led by a socialist in-name-only party, but like I said I'm extremely under-informed so I think there's a good chance that thought has to be a kneejerk reaction due to some propganda I've consumed unknowingly in the past.

So, I'm here to ask for any of your favorite reading about this! Essays, articles, even a well sourced yt vid (hopefully I don't just get vids tho lol), whatever you think has been a good resource in studying this area! Again, specifically want stuff focusing from ~2000 onward, I of course still need to read more about the 20th century (and even other earlier de-colonial struggles!), but I'm much more confident that at least have a good grasp of the broad strokes of 20th century movements.

Interesting in-depth read on stock buybacks and the main perpetrators (Apple is #1 of course). Stock buybacks are corporate corruption, where senior executives cash in the profits of the company by getting paid in stocks and then colluding to use the company profits to buy stocks (thus artificially inflating the value of stocks) and then dumping them. Literally a pump and dump scheme.

When someone mentions that there is no corruption in the private sector, send them this article.

🌩🌩BRAINSTORM SESSION!🌩🌩

There was a recent post reminding us to organize IRL. While that is essential, most of us spend time online and off Lemmygrad. And there is ALWAYS small opportunities for radicalization.

Social media is terrible and often a terrible waste of time and energy. However, for those of us on it, it is undeniably, in this age, a major way that people form opinions on political matters.

We in the Western Left have a lot of work we need to do. It can seem overwhelming at times because we don'tknow where to start. The populace is intuitively sympathetic to our analysis and even our proposed solutions, but they are completely innoculated against it, which makes it very difficult to recruit for IRL organizations, to agitate, to even have simple conversations with people. Even those who might be receptive are simply living in a reality that is completely different from ours, because they have never even been exposed to our narrative at all! Small bits of exposure is what will be the groundwork towards radicalizing many people.

Whether we like it or not, we are essentially Nazis in terms of censorship...no, worse, actually! I see people talk about Jews or Blacks etc. pretty regularly with little consequence, but it's gotten to the point where anytime I try and say "America" I get censored.

So, it got me thinking, and I used some emojis instead.

Suddenly, I could talk about the evils of 🦅🇺🇲🪖🕵‍♂️🐷🇪🇺🤵💰🇺🇦 all sorts of things, and my comments, posts, etc. were censored less (keyword less). It certainly worked better than when I said things like N@tzees, n4yto, or similarly self-censored words that probably get flagged as spam (?).

It sucks that we have to stoop to the actions of Nazis, such as dogwhistling. This truth should be sung from rooftops. But we must accept the reality that we are a targeted demographic in every sense and that we could learn from the social engineering successes of the goblinoids on 4chan that played a small part in popularizing Trump, "race realism," Jewish Cabal conspiracy, and many other psychosocial parasites that have persisted to this day.

What do you think? What are other good dogwhistles? Have you noticed any particular things that get you censored or any tricks to bypass it?

There have been users spamming CSAM content in !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world causing it to federate to other instances. If your instance is subscribed to this community, you should take action to rectify it immediately. I recommend performing a hard delete via command line on the server.

I deleted every image from the past 24 hours personally, using the following command: sudo find /srv/lemmy/example.com/volumes/pictrs/files -type f -ctime -1 -exec shred {} \;

Note: Your local jurisdiction may impose a duty to report or other obligations. Check with these, but always prioritize ensuring that the content does not continue to be served.

Around 5,000 protesters gathered in Seoul on Saturday to condemn Japan's release of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea, and to criticize the South Korean government for endorsing the release plan. The protesters urged the Japanese government to immediately terminate the discharge, while demanding immediate action from the South Korean government to stop Japan's dumping of the radioactive water.
