Welcome to Maple Music, a community on the Lemmy.ca instance focused on bringing attention to Canadian music and musicians!

Like everything else, Canada has a rich music culture, spanning from the traditional music of the First Nations to a unique spot in the Punjabi music scene, a rich variety of folk performers to the big names in pop, and established underground music cultures such as the Edmonton hiphop and rap scene to the metal scene in the Atlantic provinces.

This community allows for postings of Canadian music news, covering anything from the local scene to world-renowned names such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Celine Dion. It also allows for sharing Canadian musicians you wish to give a spotlight to, individual songs and albums by Canadian artists you enjoy, and even a bit of Canadian music history seeing how poorly documented some Canadian music history can be at times.

--

Please post albums using odesli.co! It's essentially link tree but for music. This allows people to listen to the song on whichever platform they prefer, assuming that it is available there. This is not strictly required, but is the most ideal way to share music.

Community Rules and Guidelines:

  1. Follow Site-wide rules: We are all guests in lemmy.ca's house. The house has rules that we must follow. We are polite guests.

  2. Formatting: Song and Album posts should follow the this format: "Musician - Title [Genre] (Year) (track length)". Genre, Year, and track length are not required but encouraged. Posts regarding news articles must include the article title in the post's title. Otherwise, make titles relevant to what you are trying to talk about.

  3. On Topic Posts only: All posts must be related to the Canadian music scene to some extent. For example: News about Taylor Swift will be removed. News about Taylor Swift having a Canadian tour will be kept.

  4. French & English Equal: French and English content, posts, and comments are equally welcomed and encouraged.

  5. Self-Made Music Welcomed: Are you Canadian and artistically talented? Feel free to post it here! Please do limit excessive self promotion however.

The No Rules:

  1. No shaming of music tastes: Mumble rap is not for everyone, and neither is country or dubstep. Avoid all "real music" type comments. Refrain from downvoting music that is not your taste, everyone should feel welcome regardless of the genre you enjoy.

  2. No music piracy. Much of the musicians and music shared here are likely small independent acts that deserve fiscal support. If money is an issue, please look into free and/or Creative Commons releases, a list of such titles will be made and built on as the community grows.

  3. No Spam: Please avoid spam. Rather than make individual posts for each song by a musician you like, instead make a singular post bringing attention to the musician. This applies for self-promotion posts as well.

  4. No AI Generated content: AI music posts will be deleted. This community is made to support Canadian talent. An AI cannot be Canadian, nor can it generate truly original content without infringing on countless other artist's copyrights.

  5. No doing stuff that makes me need to make more rules: Moderation reserves the right to take action on anything seen as detrimental to the community. Just cause I didn't write it down here doesn't mean it is necessarily allowed.

Rules are subject to change as the community grows.

Hi all!

This was a post I had made in this community previously when I had my account on the lemmy.ca instance. Unfortunately, when I deleted my account there, it didn't clue in that in choosing to delete my posts as well, that that would include the resource posts I've made. That said, here's a recreated list that will be added to as time goes on:

Provincial Music Organisations:

Most provinces and territories have their own non-profit music organisations for the province. These organisations often help serve a role in connecting venues to musicians, musicians to those who are able to provide services of use to them, and giving musicians an opportunity to advertise themselves on the local level.

The following links are for the major music organisations in each province and territory sorted in alphabetical order of the province they serve. Please note that British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are absent as their sites lack a browsable directory, and that Nunavut is absent due to the absence of a territorial music organisation.

Quebec has also been excluded because of the language barrier on my part. If you speak French and know of the go-to organisation in Quebec with a musician directory, please let me know and I will add it.

Regional Music Organisations:

There are plenty of music organisations that either serve smaller regions than those of provinces and territories, or regions comprising of multiple provinces or territories such as the prairie provinces or Maritimes. The following is a list of organisations at a more specific or broad regional level:

Music Organisations based on Genre or other metric:

There are a number of music organisations in Canada that specialise in a specific genre, or serve specific communities such as those who are indigenous or black. A few of them include:

Canadian Music Streaming:

There is a lack of Canadian options for music streaming, with only two options coming to mind:

  • CBC Listen - CBC Listen offers music streaming, though the features of the platform are quite limited. Music is offered purely in playlists that can't be browsed, and while Canadian musicians are often featured, more mainstream artists from abroad are not uncommon.
  • Nikamowin - Nikamowin is a music streaming platform based in Canada that is catered and built for Indigenous musicians. On top of basic search functionality, one is able to search by genre, tribe/nation, and language.

Canadian Music Databases:

  • Museum of Canadian Music / CitizenFreak - The Museum of Canadian Music is Canada's largest private music museum. Over 960,000 tracks of Canadian music can be found here sorted by decade, genre, region, and more.
  • Canadian Music Centre - The Canadian Music Centre has preserved over 26,000 works by Canadian composers. These can be browsed, listened to, and watched freely for anybody interested.

Canadian Music News:

The pages listed below are publications based in Canada that mainly focus on the Canadian music scene, publications based in Canada focusing on music abroad have not been included. They are as follows:

  • Exclaim! - Canada's largest independent music publication.
  • Canadian Beats - Independent Canadian news magazine focused on spotlighting Canadian talent since 2013.
  • Hip Hop Canada - The best source for news on Canadian hip hop. Unfortunately uses AI for many of the article thumbnails.
  • Roots Music Canada - Online publication posting articles on Canadian roots music.

Canadian Music Awards:

  • East Coast Music Awards - An annual awards ceremony focused on recognising music from Atlantic Canada.
  • The Junos - An annual awards ceremony to celebrate the best of Canada's music talent
  • Polaris Music Prize - An award presented annually to the best Canadian album based on artistic merit alone

Canadian Music Charts:

  • !earshot - !earshot tracks music charts for campus radio stations across Canada. Canadian musicians on the charts are labelled with a Canadian flag next to their name.

Non-Canadian Resources for finding Canadian music:

A lot of the time one will need to utilise non-Canadian platforms to find Canadian music. Some of these include:

  • Bandcamp - While based in the U.S., Bandcamp is renowned for being a supportive platform for smaller musicians. In the discover page, one is able to search for musicians by region such as country, province or territory, or city. Be cautious however, as sometimes music by non-Canadian musicians will be posted to the pages of labels based in Canada, such as Monstercat.
  • ReverbNation - Owned by BandLab, which is based in Singapore. One is able to search for musicians based on country, province or territory, or city.

This list will be a constant work in progress. Feel free to mention more resources below, and I will gladly add them.

The Band is a Canadian-American classic rock band that formed in 1968, but the members had a history of playing together as early as the 1950s. With the Canadian members being from Toronto and the American vocalist being from Woodstock, New York, the group made a truly timeless and iconic version of rock that has strong roots in classic rock, Americana, folk, R&B, jazz, and country. The Band played together with members coming and going from 1968 to as far as 1999, but their prime was in the 70s and 80s.

To this day, The Band is immensely popular and has influenced music in Canada, America, and globally. They still get nearly 3 million monthly listens on Spotify, with the majority of listeners coming from New York City, Chicago, and Toronto.

I figured this song would be most fitting for me as I just scored my first union job! I don't want to doxx myself, but it is a sight for sore eyes, even with its blemishes, compared to lots of the jobs I've worked where I've had no protection and few rights.

Emma Alves is an "experimental R&B" artist from Vancouver, Canada

I like her calm sleepy style. The song 'The Gardener' is new to me, and the other songs from the album have been out for a few weeks. I may have posted about them in the past.

Pretty chill song from a dude in Toronto. Doing support for Pink Mountaintops in Ottawa tomorrow at the 27 Club.

This track in particular gives me grunge meets psych vibes.

Bandcamp artist bio:

((C.ROSS)) ......formerly known as NORDIC NOMADIC is the solo project of toronto, ontario, canada's Chad Ross (QUEST FOR FIRE, COMET CONTROL). Acoustic psych jams performed with deep fried guitars, space echoes, broken synths, shakey junk, green shake, chirping birds and cans of beer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rezz

Isabelle Rezazadeh (born 28 March 1995), who is known by her stage name Rezz (stylized in all caps), is a Ukrainian–Canadian DJ and record producer from Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Rezz is an electronic music producer and DJ; her sound has been described as "midtempo bass" and a modern styling of "new beat".[1] In 2015, MTV called her the "new queen of the dark techno scene", writing she had been "making electronic and techy beats for two years" at that point.[3] EDM.com's Niko Sani wrote Rezz's "deliciously ominous, often alien-sounding bass music" helped gain her popularity within the electronic music scene in around 2016.[54] Other music writers have referred to Rezz's music as sounding "dark",[55] as well as "menacing", "mechanical", "haunting and industrial".[56] Spotify's outlet For the Record profiled Rezz, calling her "one of the most highly regarded producers of downtempo soundscapes", and saying she "strikes a firm balance between minimal original tech compositions and the all-heavy bass"

I loved Wolf Castle's other album, 'Waiting for the Dawn'. Stephen Hero is new to me.

https://www.wolfcastle.ca/

Wolf Castle is an Indigenous rapper, producer and singer from Pabineau First Nation, New Brunswick.

https://www.conservationcouncil.ca/community-engaged-art/featured-artist-stephen-hero/

Stephen Hero (Matthew Elliot) makes raw, working-class hip hop from Canada’s east coast. His style is influenced by alt-rap legends like Kool Keith and MF DOOM, with a strong penchant for the relaxed and joyous experimentation of groups like De La Soul and Beastie Boys, but with a contemporary feel.

Fantasy Life is a collection of thirteen songs written under the heat of the sun in Los Angeles, California and then recorded during the dead of winter in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It’s about the mundane and the magical, the delusional and the hopeful, the thrilling and the crushing. It’s the promise of spring and then all the snow melts to reveal piles of glittering garbage. It’s watching bright balloons float away into the clouds. It’s a slimy fleshy worm feeding a beautiful garden. A place to escape to but not to live forever.

There’s a spirit of freedom to this record that was such a big part of the songwriting sessions I had in LA with deadmen. I spent a little over a month in total with them writing this record every day and it’s the most RIGHT in songwriting sessions that I've ever felt. Everything felt so easy and fun and that has never happened to me quite like that before. This freedom allowed me to go to more complex and comfortable places with my voice and in my lyrics than I have in the past. I feel like I’ve grown so much in my sound and my confidence in the last few years and I know that reflects in this record.

The Tragically Hip hardly need introduction but here it is regardless. Formed in 1984 in Kingston, Ontario they are likely the most ironic Canadian music band, standing shoulder to shoulder with other iconic groups such as Rush. While Rush found more success across North America, The Tragically Hip stayed Canadian in the topics of their songs, arguably limiting their success but forever weaving themselves into the tapestry of Canadian culture.

As well as being Canadian icons, they are a band that have proven themselves time after time with their dedication to raising awareness and funds for a variety of humanitarian causes.

I try to bring the spotlight to lesser known and niche Canadian bands in this community, but I think we can carve some space for some of the iconics from time to time.

Bring the Light is a very recent melodic hardcore punk band formed in 2018, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec -- otherwise known as the South shore of Montreal. The members consist of ex members of the disbanded punk rock bands Subb, Twenty2 and The Lookout.

This band is possibly the smallest band I've posted on the community! As of now, there are only 379 monthly listeners, although Take Back the Crown does have 100k listens. All the rest are less than 5k listens. I highly recommend giving some of their songs a try, they are really cool. Sounds like something you'd hear on Tony Hawk Skater Pro, and I mean that as a compliment.

Bring the Light is still active and regularly plays in the Montreal region and releasing new original songs. They are currently working on their first album, to be released without a label, some time in 2025 or 2026.

The Dirty Nil is a band from Hamilton, Ontario. Fitting as I am likely going to be moving to Hamilton for work soon! They originally formed in 2006, and are still actively playing in Canada.

They are a 3 person band, with the Lead vocals and guitar, Luke Bentham, and Drums, Kyle Fisher, being with the band since 2006. Their Bass and backing vocal member has changed ever 5 years or so, with the most recent change being this year, with Anthony Vitanza taking the role.

Pain of Infinity it not even remotely one of their most popular songs, but it is the one that I like the most. The opening riffs are super nice to listen to, and the lyrics remind me quite a bit of previous relationships I've had. If you listen to the lyrics, you'll piece together it wasn't a healthy one.

The Real Mackenzies is a Scottish-Canadian Celtic Rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. The Band is centered around one Paul Mackenzie, who is the only original band member from its inception in 1992.

The band features strong Celtic influences first and foremost, as well as a steep sense of tongue-in-cheek humour that the Scottish are known for. The band is largely known for starting the Canadian Celtic Punk scene, a scene which I did not know existed until Spotify randomly played this song for me a month ago. However, I think it is one of my most favourite niche genres of Canadian music now.

The band is still active and performing to this day.
