If you don't know Chinese, you might not know that right now, the biggest movie in the world is Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants. This blockbuster adaptation of Jin Yong's classic wuxia epic novel, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, is one of the defining works of the wuxia genre. It stars Xiao Zhan as hero Guo Jing and is being hyped as director Tsui Hark's biggest comeback in decades. It opened this week for Chinese New Year, the biggest Chinese holiday and movie season of the year, and has already racked up 300 million ticket sales. You wouldn't know any of this because until Deadline reported on the Chinese New Year opening day box office earnings, no Western media had written about it at all.

The original novel of The Legend of the Condor Heroes has an official English translation from a UK and US publisher, all four volumes of it, and is bigger than Lord of the Rings – virtually every Chinese person knows it, and not just in China. Tsui Hark is one of the most influential action directors in the world next to John Woo, who has helped shape action movies in Hollywood and the rest of the world since the 1980s and 1990s, not counting his two forgettable Hollywood-funded Jean-Claude Van Damme movies in the 1990s. Yet there's not a single article written about this movie in English language or Western media, not even the Hollywood trades beyond a report on the box office charts.

On Avenue Mews in the leafy North London suburb of Muswell Hill, long-term friends Ruth (Ruth Syratt) and Megan (Megan Stevenson) run Cha Cha Cha together from rented premises. There they sell vintage goods – “anything we can get our hands on that’s from the past”, as Ruth puts it. They do not, however, sell the old dodgem car – with flashing lights and lo-fi control boards attached – which they find abandoned by the bins outside their shop, but instead, upon discovering that it is a time machine, use it to gather genuine antiques from different places and eras.

Six years later, business is booming, but strange meteorological phenomena suggest that something is amiss in the space-time continuum. A secret club of local eccentric inventors known as the Technology Engineering Scientific Thought and Innovation Society, or ’T.E.S.T.I.S’ (it will later be renamed B.R.E.S.T.S., in part to reflect the shifting gender balance of its membership), realises what is happening, and recruits the two women to their group.

...

Narrated by Stephen Fry, Time Travel Is Dangerous is a very English kind of sci-fi comedy, with very little actual science, but plenty of absurdist emphasis on the schlubbish, amateurish, no-budget side of invention – and indeed of inventive filmmaking. It is an endearing, surreal and funny portrait of friendship lasting across time.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has cut ties with Marvel after expressing disappointment with his alleged treatment at the premiere of the latest film.

The artist and writer is the brains behind the foul-mouthed anti-hero, and has a working relationship with the comic book publishers lasting more than 30 years.

But he felt sidelined at the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, the first Deadpool film to be released since Disney acquired Fox, and has opened up about his perceived experience.

According to Liefeld, he felt ignored by Disney bosses, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege, at the July 2024 event and was upset to discover he and his family had not been invited to the premiere afterparty.

...

Liefeld, who receives large revenue streams for the character he created in 1991, revealed that, one month before the film’s release, he requested more involvement with the marketing and promotion.

He also wanted a special credit different to the standard one given to comic book creators at the end of the film – noting that his request stemmed from Marvel’s decision to give Roy Thomas a Wolverine co-creator status alongside Len Wein and John Romita, Sr.

He wrote in the email: “Marvel’s treatment of creators has never been their strength. Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create – and in this specific case, the world of Deadpool – there are no films to shoot. No blockbusters to distribute. … I am not the easy button at Staples. I am the human imagination behind it all.”

Liefeld claimed that his response did not get received in the way he was after, tweeting: “My reps were screamed at today ‘We are NOT Fox!’ Tell me about it. Also hung up on.”
