This is a really interesting and informative video about how booster packs helped the game grow compared to their utility now in a much more mature game.

I've been trying to get my brother and brother-in-law into draft so I preordered draft night and am hoping it'll motivate them to give it a try (my wife will also play).

My plan is to have a gimmicky but fun prize for each place (they like alcohol):

  • First place: A shooter of a fancy scotch
  • Second: A shooter of bourbon
  • Third: A shooter of spiced rum maybe?
  • Fourth: A shooter of fireball

So the collector booster doesn't really need to be a prize, I could keep it for myself since they won't really understand its value anyway. But I like playing with what I buy so I was wondering if it could be added to the draft in a fair way?

I was thinking maybe lay that pack out face up after drafting and take turns picking a card to add to your draft pool. But is there a fair way to decide who goes first? I guess there will be multiple rares so we could just roll a dice and hopefully everyone gets something for their colors. And I suppose the commons and uncommons will still be relevant.

Anyone have any ideas?

So I've been anxiously awaiting Lorwyn - I wanna love this set so badly, and it looks like a lot of care was put into its creation. I love draft and so I've specifically been wanting a great draft environment that's replayable and fun and has some cool build-arounds and maybe one of those hard-to-do decks like shrines from Avatar.

So only seeing 5 main archetypes worries me. Especially because they're tribal and that's lower on my list of archetypes I enjoy... To be fair, it seems like they aren't just straight tribal - Goblins is blight and Elementals is 4+ cost spells - for example.

I'm fairly new to draft/magic - so is this a bad sign?

My hope was to build a set cube, so I guess I could tweak/expand the other 5 color pairs. My understanding is that they're just missing some support, I heard they're missing a signpost card each, but if they also lack depth and aren't really a cool thing to do in draft then I worry the format won't feel very replayable...

Although 😭 maybe I'll only have time to draft 5 decks since it'll only be at my LGS for 5 weeks before TMNT...

From the prerelease guide: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/lorwyn-eclipsed-prerelease-guide

There are five two-color draft archetypes in Lorwyn Eclipsed, each of which is tied to one of the set's prominent creature types. There are also draft archetypes for the other five color pairs, but those are focused on mechanical themes rather than creature types, and they aren't the focus of this guide.

While it isn't impossible to build a deck that's outside of these five color pairs, we'd recommend sticking to one of the suggested draft archetypes for your first few outings with Lorwyn Eclipsed. Don't worry, there's plenty of texture to be found in these five archetypes.

The last sentence feels hard to trust...

I wanted an easy way to playtest MTG online with friends, and I couldn't find one. so I made one, and made it opensource.

2026 ‘Forest’ secret lair promo card. My final of the ‘Lotus Lands’ and will be available next May 1-3 at the Las Vegas Magic Con.

It’s a happy/sad moment in my 30 year tour of duty with Wizards Of The Coast. It’s probably my last one. I don’t want to say never again, as that’s unknown, though I am now continuing to put my health first and ‘hitting my technical standard’ is still rather beyond my physical limitations! However maybe I can re-boot somehow one day. Pat and I intend to move house next year so will be a busy one and I am daily working on my own stuff, not at the computer, but drawing and developing projects that I’m passionate about. I want to say a huge thank you again to those who have supported my art. There are many many fine new illustrators out there and I am really ready to be more in the background. We will have various options in the new year to purchase products related to these.

Those huge signings were a blast and I’ll miss the interactions. Hope Christmas was good and Happy New Year from a sunny Sussex. J.
