a place for weird, unique, or oddly specific playlists

the rules:

  1. be civil. let’s try to keep our community as chill as possible. no bullying, zero tolerance for transphobia, hate speech or any of that bigoted bullshit.
  1. be content with the content. if someone didn't make a playlist the way you would, make your own and post it please. no bullying, no picking on, mocking or complaining about anyones playlist or musical tastes.
  1. remember: all music is good music to someone. general discussions about music you like and don’t like is fine, but please refrain from comments that will make someone feel bad about what they enjoy.
  1. no self-promotion. this is not a group for promoting your music or a business, website, app, instagram.. you get the idea. it's just playlists in here

What can we post?

  • Any weird, bizarre, or oddly specific playlists you find that you think the community would like; you don’t have to make the playlist yourself. We also accept music-themed memes, as long as they don't break the rules (the rules are on the sidebar)
  • An ideally finished playlist would have: unique cover art or an image that inspired you, a weird, bizarre, or oddly specific title or theme, a detailed description in the post, and a link to the playlist-BUT! thats the ideal, and your playlists do not have to be finished to that level; if you’ve got a vague but really unique idea go ahead and post it!

What can we comment?

  • We can talk about anything! Posts may have specific requirements, but comments can go in whatever direction they want. Just be nice, no singling out and mocking a persons taste in music, and no complaints about someones playlist. General discussions about music you like and don’t like is fine, just don’t make it personal. Let’s keep our community as chill and drama-free as possible.

Some examples of playlists:

  • instead of a “gardening playlist” try something more descriptive and particular like “I’m an angry gnome, tending to my garden in a rainstorm”
  • a “break up playlist” wouldn’t be very unique, but “you broke my heart so hard I developed pyrokinesis” sounds like a pretty good playlist
  • “popular music playlist” wouldn’t work, but “I was raised in a cult and haven’t listened to popular music since 1983” would be interesting

What are the post requirements?

  • Please try to be as specific as you can. Check out the examples I posted above. If you're making a playlist I find the more specific you are, the better. It's helpful to ask yourself, what's the vibe or aesthetic I'm going for? Is my playlist meant for any particular music genres? decade? mood? song titles? bpm?
  • Remember to tell us if you want/don't want song suggestions!
  • If you’re using an image as inspiration, post it! But please tell us about the image and what you’re going for. If you need help you can always ask by commenting in this post.
  • Ideally, I'd like you to post a link to the playlist (on spotify, apple, youtube, etc.) If there isn’t a list built yet, please consider creating one yourself and sharing the link
  • Please don’t overpost or repeat posts. Let's go for quality and variety over quantity.

Future ideas:

  • We will need ~~an icon and~~ a banner at some point

  • We might end up choosing a day of the week for posting memes eventually, but for now I'm gonna be pretty lax about posting til we get bigger

  • I’m also thinking maybe we’ll have off-topic days?

  • maybe community built playlists?

  • how about theme posts, everyone shares their playlists that fit the theme?

  • sometimes I like to nerd out about really specific bits of music history; if people are interested we can do posts like that as well

  • maybe we can do music recommendation threads? or we can have a day of the week where we do this?

Any suggestions or questions, please ask them in the comments on this post. Thanks!

K-Mart Shopping Radio (kmartradio.com)

tl;dr:

Help classify the content of the K-Mart tapes at https://kmartradio.com/ and https://www.openculture.com/2016/01/attention-k-mart-shoppers.html.

I recently read an article about the Attention K-Mart Shoppers archive.org collection and could not help but to grab the files, save them all for posterity, and broadcast them worldwide on a random rotation. Honestly, this is amazing study and work music. It's ear cotton. It's nostalgic. It's uplifting. It's trivia.

Read on for a stupid, optional idea: Let's break the large tapes and records into identifiable songs, where possible, and mark the metadata for announcements, ads, pretty much anything we can. This is an impossible task for one person and I can only imagine what Amazon Turk might return, though given funds the results may be worth publishing in an open scientific journal....

If you want to help, message me here on Lemmy and let's embark together on a meaningless yet fulfilling project.

What I am looking for at a minimum is song name, the name of the K-Mart album, and time stamp. Any extra data, such as running length, recording quality, original broadcast date, genre (holiday, elevator cover), anything really would be really helpful. All contributed information will be collated on some sort of community-recommended data collection service, be it git or calc or whatever, and will be shared back to archive.org in the Attention K-Mart shoppers collection. All data collected will be public domain and open source. The interested community will provide input on compatible licensing.

That's my proposal.

FAQ:

Q: Why?

A: If you are asking this question this post isn't for you.

Q: What would I do?

A: You hear a song. You know something about the song. You jot down what you know (title, artist but that is a long-shot on most of these, genre, anything relevant to categorization and metadata) and send that info and the album name and time stamp to the to-be-determined data collection service. I/someone will then rip out the song, add metadata, and add it it the archive.org collection.

Q: This is dumb.

A: Not a question and yes, I know. But, let's have some fun if you are not a neurotypical like myself and want to contribute some data that may be useful in an entity's computer core someday.

Q: I only know something or a little bit. Should I contribute?

A: Yes.

Contributions will be open if enough interest is shown to form a community. Otherwise, well, I tried.

tl;dr:

Help classify the content of the tapes.

it's the 1990s and you're an angry little anti-establishment feminist scribbling in their zine (mostly riot grrrl, punk, early queercore, and whatever else fits)
