[vivid hate of Morrissey…] The bangers by The Smiths remain bangers. If only they could be enjoyed live without the taint of Morrissey infecting them.

Enter Rick Astley!

Not content with Rickrolling stadium crowds… the meme king of side quests has made it his mission to make The Smiths songs enjoyable live again, appearing at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival over the weekend to not only perform a set of his own, but to then put on a secret show with English group Blossoms, which consisted entirely of The Smiths covers. This isn’t the first time that Astley and Blossoms have gotten together onstage to perform the material, and judging by the reception it might not be the last. Morrissey is dead, long live New Morrissey.

oh please let me find video of this

We pop fans are pretty used to shade, but each of us has unpopular opinions that could cause bar fights even among us.

One of mine is, even though Born This Way is a caricature of itself, I reach for it more frequently than any other Gaga album.

I also still like "Never Gonna Give You Up."

For many, it’s impossible to think about Barbie — or the upcoming Barbie movie — without also thinking about the hit song “Barbie Girl.” The single, released by Danish-Norwegian band Aqua in 1997, quickly became a global success — being described as both a masterpiece and the most annoying tune ever made.

What is less well known is that Barbie maker Mattel tried to sue the band over the song.…

After years of legal tennis, the case eventually made it to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, where Judge Alex Kozinski wrote in his legal opinion, “If this were a sci-fi melodrama, it might be called Speech-Zilla meets Trademark Kong.”

On a more serious note, Kozinski ruled in favor of MCA, noting that the song was parody and therefore protected by the First Amendment. But he concluded his opinion with the memorable line, “The parties are advised to chill.”

call me any -ist you like, but i'm not taking any boomer dude's advice on a britney-themed jukebox musical. even if i fully expect it may be actually no good.

at least they found someone on copy desk to write a punny headline for him

[At an Ava Max concert in LA] a man ran on stage and slapped the singer mid-performance. Security dragged him away, as Max continued to finish her song.

Working on which day of the week, but Mondays are boring to me. What are you listening to? What are you finding yourself repeating over and over because you can't get enough?

Looks like there could be a new Alessia Cara album in the works.

On the bad photo sharing app, she's just posted about how she's been busy "putting down some old thoughts and picking up new ones"...

Just saw this video for the first time on a random channel that uploads some old RnB content - it's incredible! I had no idea Patty could sing in that style. It's almost like Dolly a little bit.

What has Kesha been up to over the last few years? That's a name I haven't heard in a while

i was reminded that 'million dollar baby' bears a dianne warren writing credit just for interpolating a few notes from the hook of 'can't fight the moonlight'.

that led to looking at neighbor listens, where someone just listened to rihanna's 'bitch better have my money'. which i remember as a rap song from practically before she was born.

looked it up on musicbrainz and it's a different song, and with her having a writing credit: as robyn fenty, which i now remember as her real name. i think she uses variations of this on some merch lines.

sting as gordon sumner made sense, who wants to be a rock star called gordon, although 'gordon sumner for jaguar' makes more sense than sting.

any funny or favourite stage names out there?

Wow 110 subscribers! Coming from checks notes zero 2 weeks ago this is pretty startling for me. Welcome all, thanks for being here!

Just a few notes for folks here. My name is scrubbles, I'm the admin and I run the instance we're all sitting on. I'm so happy to run this for everyone, after the fallout with Reddit I've decided that I'm not going back. My time here on Lemmy has been better for my mental health, I feel like content is fun again. That's my way of saying I'm in it for the long haul, we're here to stay!

Now onto new business

Reporting

Lemmy and the fediverse is seeing huge migrations in people. New folks are coming in every day, with that there will be some people that aren't as kind as we've seen so far. Please feel free to hit the report button if something doesn't feel right. Even if they aren't breaking an explicit rule, let the mods know. We don't have a full set of rules yet after all, maybe we need a new one.

Calling all mods

Now that we've broken 100 subscribers, I'd like to officially extend an invite for volunteer mods. Previously it was just me in ~~an attempt to retain absolute power~~ kidding folks I didn't want to run this place with a thousand rules and guidelines right off the bat. However now that we're crossing 100 I don't think I should be the only person running the show here. If anyone would like to step up they are honestly very welcome to do so, just DM me and we'll get you started. Running the instance will be a job for me alone, I'll need additional people to help run individual communities. They'd be given a pretty wide latitude to run the communities how they want, (obviously within reason). They'd could even start running some fun things like...

Ask not what the sub can do for you

Or do, really. What things do you wish we were doing? Should we do daily threads? Should we do weekly "what am I listening to" threads? I've been throwing up random articles I find along the way, but I'm sure that's getting boring. Pitch ideas, what have you liked in other places?

Community creation is open

You can create communities here! I haven't because 1) I'm not sure what people want to see and 2) I'm going to need some help modding more communities. So, if you feel like you want to mod a community and create it, just ask. I'm happy to create any and ~~all~~ most communities (they're are already some NSFW communities here on Lemmy around popstars...) you will be given full domain of those communities.

Is it time we set up a Carly Rae Jepsen one? Someone ping me and I'll get it going for you! (....aaaand it's done already, what other ones do we need?)

In addition I'm open to mods for the TaylorSwift community and we have a new CircleJerk community that someone was going to run, but they haven't responded to me in a couple days now...

Don't be a lurker!

It's very easy to be a lurker here, god knows I was for years, but as we're getting started don't be afraid to post. Whatever news, excitement, theories, pictures, whatever feel free to post! I promise you people have been much nicer here than other places.

Concerns or criticisms?

I'm new at this, so please I want to make a good community for you all. If you have anything you don't like, you can call it out in comments or in a private message. All I ask is you follow some great advice one of my managers gave me, "Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions." If there are problems, give me some ways I could fix the problem and I'll absolutely do my best.

Again, welcome, and happy to have you!
