After reading a completely credulous article attributing the success of OpenAI's latest model on the ARC-AGI test to the spontaneous emergence of genuine AGI and not, as seems more likely, the fact that the benchmark has recently become fashionable and therefore they've been specifically aiming for it as they develop the model, I finally took a look at the test itself.

It's sort of a fun little challenge for the bots, but it's absolutely nothing compared to playing the game of Go as they managed to do in 2016. Meanwhile actual AGI as we traditionally think of it will be when an artificial intelligence can hear about the game of Go somewhere, having never heard of or trained on it, find it interesting, and teach itself to play.

Today I thought up a new version of hell: Someone is placed in a town. Everything looks normal. However, upon closer inspection they'll realize all of the food in the town has 0s on the nutrition label. All made from cellulose, no calorie sweetener, etc. Endlessly eating as they try to stop the hunger while they slowly wither away.

Bluesky is a thing now.

Opened an account last week or so, and it was great…for a week…mainly scientists and academics…then the Twitter migration kept happening, just like the Reddit migration happened here…and now BlueSky seems to be a new echo chamber only talking about Fascism and resistance.

The loud crazy guy spewing leftist conspiracy theories has moved there now.

While I’m glad that Twitter users have found a safe heaven there, I still like my corky international Fediverse feed better.

The local grocery store does delivery! This improves my life somewhat. They take orders by email, which are relayed to a man employed by the store to pick the orders and drive the van. No shitty big-data rent-seeking middlemen involved. It's pretty good.

I've learned that the reason why the brand of honey I've been buying is so good is that it's unfiltered and unpasteurized. It gives me a vague sense of unease as I wonder if there's some good reason why so many producers of the stuff do filter and pasteurize it even though it tastes this much better when you don't.

I mentioned, whimsically, that it was a personal failing of mine that I hadn't persisted for a single day being constantly aware of every breath, inhaling and exhaling. She reacted with horror at the idea of doing such a thing, imagining it possible only if every breath was difficult and painful. I easily dismissed her reaction as a misunderstanding, but perhaps I shouldn't have. Simple awareness can incite many feelings.

Week 8 of my campaign of diet and exercise: I think my body is building up a tolerance to wheat bran.

Common sense is less common than you think

I stopped the whistling tea kettle from doing it's whistle this morning, to avoid disturbing the deer that were hanging around on the other side of the kitchen window. Showing such deference to wildlife makes me feel like I'm being slightly stupid, but it seemed like the polite thing to do.
