Connect with Jesper Gerved

Jesper Gerved interviews Richard Seiersen, one of the authors of the best-selling book “How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk”.

"In my conversation with Richard Seiersen, when he visited our studio in Copenhagen, we explored how organizations can transform cyber uncertainties into clear, actionable insights. For those deeply involved in risk quantification, one significant takeaway is the emphasis on working backwards from value at risk.

𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭: Richard highlighted the importance of understanding "value at risk" by assessing potential threats and disruptions to core business functions. This approach ensures that your risk quantification efforts are directly tied to what the business stands to lose, effectively prioritizing protection efforts.

𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Managing cyber risk is not a solitary task—it requires collaborative efforts across the organization. Leaders from finance, operations, and risk need to align strategies to safeguard business resilience.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚: Richard emphasizes that you probably have more data at your disposal than you realize and can start making informed decisions without needing perfect information."

SEC-T 2025 (self.security_cpe)

I attended SEC-T 2025 and it was mostly great. There were Good bits and Ugly bits.

The good bits was most of the conference. Nerds and nerd heaven. Lots of coffee, cool talks.

The UGLY bit. On a day that the IDF bombed schools and tents to massacre 65 people [1] because they were Palestinians, SEC-T thought was a good day to platform 2 IDF members (Tomer Nahum, Jonathan Elkabas) for a talk. The IDF is an organisation that conducts ethnic cleansing, it is on trial for genocide [4], it enforces apartheid [5], its leaders are wanted for war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Hague [6]. The IDF is deliberately starving 2 million people. [2] The IDF regularly snipes kids in the head. [7]

The talk presenters are suspected war criminals according to the UN Human Rights Council, Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, inc. East Jerusalem, and Israel. [3]

<"Our finding that the basic military strategy used by the Israelis Since 7 Oct'23 leads to the inevitable conclusion that all those who have played a role in any way in the implementation of this strategy are suspected of the Commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. That means:

  • the air crew in the bombers that are dropping the bombs and the Rockets,
  • the crews of ships off the coast that are shelling parts of Gaza,
  • destroying fishing boats and the livelihood of fishers, the Palestinian people who depend on the sea,
  • the soldiers on the ground who are implementing the strategy of destruction of infrastructure and killing of people in their thousands.
  • Those who are far away from Gaza, who were piloting and controlling the drones that are inflicting slaughter on the Gazan people
  • Those who man the checkpoints to implement a strategy of starvation against the Palestinian people of Gaza. ">

fwd:cloudsec NA 2025

fwd:cloudsec is a non-profit conference on cloud security. At this conference you can expect discussions about all the major cloud platforms, both attack and defense research, limitations of security features, the pros and cons of different security strategies, and generally the types of things cloud practitioners want to know, but that don't fit neatly into a vendor conference schedule.

Thomas Dullien, also known under the pseudonym Halvar Flake, has been in and around the low-level computer security field since the late 1990s. He has published highly-cited papers on technical matters both practical and theoretical, pioneered at least two practices that are now industry-standard (BinDiff’ing and eBPF-based multi-runtime profiling), and given many many talks, among them a keynote at CyCon 2018 that Rob Joyce deemed a must-watch. He also founded two companies (one security-focused, acquired by Google in 2011 in response to Chinese government attacks, and another one, efficiency-focused, acquired by Elastic in 2021) and was involved in Angel investing.
