I've had a steamdeck for a couple years, one of the pre-orders back in the day. Absolutely love it.
Also let me play more PC games with my son, him on my desktop me on the steamdeck.
My wife and I decided he was old enough to get his own steamdeck. She kept an eye out on facebook marketplace until we found a good deal, and snagged it. (LCD model).
I wiped it, gave it a cleaning to as close to as new condition as possible (it was already very clean, had original case and screen cloth).
Yesterday we finally got to give it to him for his 9th Birthday. When he opened it, his initial reaction was a little subdued. Happy? But subdued. When we set it up and he started playing on it, he got a little more excited. And finally, a couple hours later he was over the moon excited / disbelief that he really had one.
Turns out...when he opened it, he thought it was my steamdeck. Not sure exactly what all went through his head, but I know he's heard us talk about finances, and us being more watchful of our spending / eating out. So I guess he thought we couldn't afford a gift for him, so I was giving him mine? Then seeing that it really was his...that he finally owned his own gaming system rather than everything being the "Families".... he was just ecstatic.
He also loves recording videos with his toys, using an old ipad 2 that still kinda functions. So we got a good webcam and I installed OBS and Openshot. Started teaching him how to do basic video editing. He had so many ideas he had trouble falling asleep because he was thinking of all the new things he could do with basic transition effects, etc. He's already recorded and edited his first video on it. Part of showing him it's a full PC. (And introducing file / folder structure, etc to boot!).
All this to say...I absolutely love this device, opens up so many possibilities. It's basically the device I've wanted for 20 years and never thought would exist. And now it's made a birthday memory that will never be forgotten!
