This was given to me today and I'm trying to mess with it to no avail. I haven't been able to root the damn thing no matter what I try. And the OEM unlocking option is absent from the developer options altogether. I have tried trick after trick, gome through step after step, and it just doesn't seem to want to let me root it. I can't flash anything on it without that as far as I am aware. The I try to mess with thw bootloader but the whole thing is in Chinese. I am extremely limited in my ability to read it. I would post pictures but for some reason I'm not able to post pictures on here anymore. But that's a separate issue. Here's some more info on the device: runs Android 4.4.2, kernel is 3.4.67. It's an iDroid Royal v7. Dunno what else I need to add, but I'll say what I can I just want to root the damn thing to play with it further. Thanks.

I have a Western Digital 4TB hard drive, and everything has been going well until recently where I had to move a computer from one room to the next. Everything was turned off and then unplugged to be moved. I plugged it all back in, turned it all back on, and then suddenly it's locked me out. I also previously before putting any data on it (this was months ago now) formatted it to be ext4 for internal use with my computer (Arch btw). Now a thing pops up in Removable Devices called WD Unlocker. I looked for everything to help me. I even plugged it into a Windows computer I had lying around to use the tool. I never put a password on it, so the tutorials were kind of useless and despite running the unlocker .exe it still won't let me access anything on it. The error message I get at the top of Dolphin says an error occurred while accessing mydrive, the system responded: an unspecified error has occurred. Did not recieve reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. I was able to get access to some files somehow like 2 days ago, but now I'm dealing with the same issue, regardless of booting the computer, and cycling on and off, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix this. I even tried using a partition manager to see what was up, but it either loads in days amounts of time, or will pull up but not show what could be causing this since I didn't expect any software to be active on it since originally formatting. Please help me. I don't want to lose almost 4TB of stuff just because it's acting stupid on me. I feel like I've tried everything, and the only other answer from looking things up I've gotten was that WD drives are stupid as hell for this specific reason. I'm at my wits end.

Edit: I'll probably use the wifi connection as an indication of power outage:)

I got a UPS that apparenlty doesnt send a shutdown signal when power goes off from the mains. What could I do to let the server know ac power is off and gracefully shut down?

My ups: Powertech UPS 1150VA Line Interactive PT-1150LI https://www.skroutz.gr/s/23613693/Powertech-UPS-Line-Interactive-1150VA-690W-me-2-Schuko-Prizes.html

I'm thinking of somehow having a device sending an "on" signal when connected to the mains that when it is interrupted (like, gone for X amount of time) the server shuts down. Then also set my server to attempt to boot up automatically every half an hour.

I have something like this just as a sample starting experiment:

digraph unix {
        margin=0;
        ratio=0.5625; /* 9/16 */
        subgraph cluster_cf {
                label = "imperial Cloudflare empire";
rankdir="LR";orientation="landscape";/*newrank=true;*/
shitjustworks_philly [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philly@sh.itjust.works](/c/philly@sh.itjust.works) “philodelphia”"];
shitjustworks_philosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philosophy@sh.itjust.works](/c/philosophy@sh.itjust.works) “Philosophy”"];
philosophycafe_philosophy_cafe_ja [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philosophy_cafe_ja@philosophy.cafe](/c/philosophy_cafe_ja@philosophy.cafe) “哲学カフェ(日本語)”"];
literaturecafe_Philosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!Philosophy@literature.cafe](/c/Philosophy@literature.cafe) “philosophy”"];
literaturecafe_philosophicalpoetry [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philosophicalpoetry@literature.cafe](/c/philosophicalpoetry@literature.cafe) “Philosophical Poetry”"];
lemmyworld_askphilosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!askphilosophy@lemmy.world](/c/askphilosophy@lemmy.world) “askphilosophy”"];
lemmyworld_debatephilosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!debatephilosophy@lemmy.world](/c/debatephilosophy@lemmy.world) “Debate Philosophy”"];
lemmyworld_indianphilosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!indianphilosophy@lemmy.world](/c/indianphilosophy@lemmy.world) “Hehehh”"];
lemmyworld_philos [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philos@lemmy.world](/c/philos@lemmy.world) “Philos”"];
lemmyworld_philosophy [shape=rectangle, label="🏰[!philosophy@lemmy.world](/c/philosophy@lemmy.world) “Philosophy”"];
        }
        123           [shape=rectangle, label="🗽☯[!naturalphilosophy@slrpnk.net](/c/naturalphilosophy@slrpnk.net)"];
        123 -> shitjustworks_philly [label="blocks",fontcolor=red,color=red];
        { rankdir=TB; cluster_cf}
}

The problem is that the nodes are wide due to wide labels. So they should be vertically stacked inside the subgraph. But they are horizontally all on the same line, making the graph extremely wide. I have fiddled with various rankdir settings (TB and LR), and tried orientation="landscape". These settings have no influence.

Date format bug? (infosec.pub)

Does anyone know why the "render" of the data would be wrong? I changed it from the US format to the ISO 8601.

Edit: Adding some spaces in the equation helped.

Several different, random seeming files across various different Syncthing folders keep failing to sync even after restart, rescan, and reconfiguration, with the below error

syncing: finishing: opening temp file: open /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Webcam/.syncthing.2024-07-1621:42:30.jpg.tmp: operation not permitted

I don't how how to fix it, the desktop app has the required permissions, and the Android app has as many storage permissions as I can give it under Android's horrible SAF limitations.

It seemed to used to be happening only to some specific old files, but now it's happening to all the new files I add onto my laptop under Videos or Music.

In addition, when trying to sync files with a specific server, it shows as disconnected, even when both are online and connected to the LAN (my phone via WiFi, the server via Ethernet), and there is some error about encryption expectations

2025-06-20 23:33:38: Failure checking encryption consistency with device server for folder "Music" (8ipwu-ehye4): remote expects to exchange encrypted data, but is configured for plain data

The server is running Syncthing GUI on Fedora GNOME, same as the laptop (which does work besides for the first issue), so I don't know what the difference is that would be causing this, not a single file has been synced to the server.

This is honestly making me want to get a Fairphone 5 with Ubuntu touch to get rid of these issues, but I can't do that now.

If anyone could advise, I would really appreciate it!

While sometimes logs aren't too difficult to follow, there's also often times they're inscrutable to those not in the weeds of their respective OS. So I was wondering if anyone around here might have some pointers to guides or the like for where to find, and help understanding, different system error logs.

On Windows there's Event Viewer to some extent, and on Linux I think it's typically /var/log (and some distros may have a GUI System Log Viewer?). Not sure of MacOS.

Thanks in advance for any replies with pointers to resources!

I watch an episode of a series, and then it randomly starts to heat up my CPU. The most reproducible case is when the episode ended while I'm not looking at it, then the PC get locked and the screen gets turned off, and VLC then, on a pause, starts to use 20%+ percents of my CPU and get completely unresponsive before I kill the process of it. If it was in fullscreen before, it'd show just a dark screen before I alt+f4 out from it. It doesn't use as much resources when it plays videos, so I guess it's VLC not reacting right to some system conditions? I'm a noob so it's just a guess.

As a side note, what do you use for watching shows? I still can't find a player that I'm 100% comfortable with. MPC-HC is what I used on Windows for years and I'm too used to how it works it seems, but I'm open to try something lightweight with simple controls to choose languages on the go.

I would like to get to the bottom of what I am doing wrong that leads to black and white documents having a bigger filesize than color.

My process for a color TIFF is like this:

tiff2pdfocrmypdfpdf2djvu

Resulting color DjVu file is ~56k. When pdfimages -all runs on the intermediate PDF file, it shows CCITT (fax) is inside.

My process for a black and white TIFF is the same:

tiff2pdfocrmypdfpdf2djvu

Resulting black and white DjVu file is ~145k (almost 3× the color size). When pdfimages -all runs on the intermediate PDF file, it shows a PNG file is inside. If I replace step ① with ImageMagick’s convert, the first PDF is 10mb, but in the end the resulting djvu file is still ~145k. And PNG is still inside the intermediate PDF.

I can get the bitonal (bilevel) image smaller by using cjb2 -clean, which goes straight from TIFF to DjVu, but then I can’t OCR it due to the lack of PDF intermediate version. And the size is still bigger than the color doc (~68k).

update

I think I found the problem, which would not be evident from what I posted. I was passing the --force-ocr option to ocrmypdf. I did that just to push through errors like “this doc is already OCRd”. But that option does much more than you would expect: it transcodes the doc. Looks like my fix is to pass --redo-ocr instead. It’s not yet obvious to me why --force-ocr impacted bilevel images more.

I've had this thing for about a year and everything was fine until a few months ago. It has a night light on the base part that also has a wireless charger. Lately if I wake up in the middle of the night or early morning and just glance at the time, the nigh light will flash on for about 2 seconds and then fade back off. I've googled and found nothing exactly like this issue. The night light feature is turned off as well as the microphone and I have no alarms set. It's like it can tell when I wake up and then flashes the light. This morning I just disconnected the base because I'm so annoyed by it. I rarely use the wireless charger so I think I'm just going to leave it without the base unless anybody here has any insight. Idk maybe it's ghosts. Lol

My Windows 10 guest running on Debian 12 using VirtualBox is creating metadata for every file that is moved or created in a shared folder. They are not seen by Windows, but they are fully visible on Linux. Also, a "System Volume Information" empty folder is created on each boot (shared folder is set to mount automatically) and is write protected, and cannot be deleted from KDE Plasma and only via terminal due to its protection.

How do I stop Windows from polluting my system?

My laptop has 8gb of ram and when idle, uses around 4.7-5gb (or60%) of it. Is this normal? If it isn't, how do I get it down to the 'normal' levels? This is a new laptop as well, so I don't have much installed on it.
