Hello everyone, time for another update on the war in Ukraine. If you'd like to get these updates in your inbox every week, please check my profile for the link to my substack.

Video of the week:

https://reddit.com/link/1lwfe3w/video/hge4yjxh52cf1/player

  • This video shows several Ukrainian long range strike drones hitting Russian military/industrial targets. These kinds of strikes happen almost every day at this point.

Maps:

Note: For reasons I don't understand, ISW has been messing around with their maps in a really annoying way, and now it won't display the yellow unconfirmed advance layer or the blue liberated Ukrainian territory layer. Hopefully those features will be fixed next week.

  • Russia has pushed further in this sector both in the center and the west.

  • Russia advanced within the city for the first time in a while. I expect that it may fall in the next few weeks.

  • Russia advanced towards Myrnohrad, and also pushed forward in the southwest of this sector.

  • Russia advanced significantly west of Velyka Novosilka again.

Events this week:

  • Trump made his most caustic comments yet about Putin, saying that his words are "meaningless" and that he throws around a lot of "bullshit." He said that in response to questions about new sanctions on Russia that he wanted to give Moscow a "little surprise." He had a conversation with Zelensky several days ago that Zelensky described as the best talk they had had so far, and he ordered a reversal of the blocking of military aid shipments to Ukraine, that had apparently been ordered by senior political staffers at the Pentagon without his knowledge. He said he was also trying to arrange the purchase of another Patriot battery by Ukraine. While the actions and words from his administration about Ukraine have been incredibly schizophrenic, I do think this represents a real change for Trump as he is finally realizing there is no negotiating with Putin about the war, and that he and Putin don't have a real relationship. While I wish that this whole thing would have been less pathetically predictable and transparently about Trump's ego rather than what is right, I'm still glad that the US finally seems to be moving in the right direction.
  • On that note, the sanctions bill against Russia now has very significant momentum in Congress, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune saying it could even be passed this month. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also expressed support for the bill this week, which I don't think he had done before. When this bill gets passed (not if), it will turn Russia's already bad economic situation into a potentially catastrophic one.
  • Germany has released more details on its massive rearmament plan. They want to buy 1,000 tanks, thousands more APCs and IFVs, and large quantities of other crucial military equipment. By comparison, Germany currently has just under 300 tanks in its military, so this would triple that number. The scale of this plan is quite significant and they are clearly taking this seriously after a long time of treating their military with contempt. Merz also said he wants to finance the purchasing of more Patriot systems for Ukraine. Germany has production facilities for Patriot missiles which means it's one of the only countries outside the US that can natively sustain a Patriot capability.
  • Bloomberg reported that Russia is resorting to confiscating property from businesses in order to sustain its war effort since their oil revenues are declining so much. They have supposedly stolen almost $50 billion dollars from their own people this way.
  • Another Bloomberg report says that the EU is considering budgeting over $120 billion dollars in aid for Ukraine over the next 7 years. They are also looking at different ways they can fill the $19 billion budget gap that Ukraine is projected to have next year.
  • Russia keeps hitting Ukraine very hard with larger and larger drone and missile strikes, last night's attack was the biggest yet. Unfortunately each week sees larger attacks. Extensive damage was done in Kyiv and also in western Ukraine.
  • Ukraine is working on ways to counter this threat, however, especially with cheaply manufactured interceptor drones which can do the work of air defense missiles with a much smaller footprint and for far less money. They are rapidly scaling up production of these drones, which could be a real game changer for air defense against other drones.
  • The Economist published new estimates on casualties and deaths for Russia and Ukraine during the war. They say that since May 1 alone, 31,000 Russians have been killed. In total, they estimate between 900,000 and 1.3 million Russian casualties (killed + wounded), and 190,000 to 350,000 killed. For Ukraine, they estimate 73,000 to 140,000 total deaths in the war. These are shocking numbers.
  • Russia is allegedly planning on importing tens of thousands more North Korean troops to man their border with Ukraine, freeing up Russian troops to be sent into the country and fight on the front line.
  • Both sides have begun widespread use of drones with autonomous terminal guidance systems that allow them to attack targets on their own, limiting the ability of electronic warfare efforts to hinder them. I personally think autonomously targeted drones are an enormous threat to the human race, but I understand that in this war, you can't really take the moral high ground at the cost of your own soldier's lives.

Oryx Numbers:

  • Total Russian vehicle losses: 22,295 (+45)
  • Russian tank losses: 4,065 (+16)
  • Russian IFV losses: 6,054 (+9)
  • Russian SPG losses: 956 (+1)
  • Russian SAM losses: 338 (+2)
  • Russian Naval losses: 28 (+0)
  • Russian Aircraft losses: 162 (+0)
  • Russian Helicopter losses: 159 (+2)
  • Total Ukrainian vehicle losses: 9,292 (+18)
  • Ukrainian tank losses: 1,210 (+0)
  • Ukrainian IFV losses: 1,409 (+0)
  • Ukrainian IMV losses: 1004 (+4)
  • Ukrainian SPG losses: 590 (+3)
  • Ukrainian SAM losses: 171 (+0)
  • Ukrainian F-16 losses: 4 (+0)

Not sure if Oryx simply hasn't done much updating this week or something, but these are some of the lowest vehicle loss numbers, if not the absolute lowest, I've seen in almost two years of these updates, which is quite strange considering that there is heavy combat happening all over the front.

Thank you for reading!

One of the Ukrainian drones tried to hit the Russian equipment, but the REB system went off. However, the second and third drone sorties were more successful. The Russian combat vehicle was hit and the paratroopers scattered.
