[Solved thanks to @tal. See instructions below.]

I'd like to subscribe and occasionally post to some usenet newsgroup like sci.physics or sci.physics.research. It's difficult! I tried to simply enter "sci.physics" in Thunderbird's Newsgroup reader, but apparently it doesn't work simply like that... Even subscribing to news.eternal-september.org didn't help – I think my understanding of providers and groups is very confused.

Could anyone kindly help?

Newbie question: is there any benefit of invite only indexers over good (paid) open indexers?

If yes, what is it? Or is "invite only" policy, only a marketing strategy? I just started and I don't know much but seeing people asking for drunken slug invites makes me want one, even though I have no idea what's behind those closed doors.

I have a few indexers and providers and I have some missing material, I am hoping the slug can fill in the gaps. Thanks

When should I be concerned whether or not a provider comes with a newsreader?

Hello! I am looking for a drunken slug invite. While I have experience with private torrent communities, the usenet is new and exciting to me.

If anyone could help I would appreciate it.

Hi,

Lately I've been looking into Usenet, and maybe this time I was planning to try it out (I am aware of Usenet since circa 2000s, so I sort of know what it is).

Still there are some things I still didn't figure out:

  • from what I see a Usenet provider and an indexer is required. And from what I gather, both are paid (indexer not exclusively paid but its better). Considering what Usenet is used for, is it sort if a requirement to pay in btc?
  • what sort of content is usually Usenet more useful for?
  • for what I see, Usenet tends to use SSL like the rest of the web. However, i would argue it gives to the ISP the visibility that you are in fact at least starting/ending connections to Usenet. Is this an issue? If so, does it make VPN a mandatory requirement? Or orbot for that matter
  • one thing that bothers me greatly: I've checked the privacy policy for the most 3 known providers (news hosting, Usenet server and euweka) and, first of all, i find incredibly sus that these seemingly 3 different providers have a sort of copy pasted privacy policy. Then, I noticed there is this magic line on it

Communicate with you about products, services, promotions, events, and other news and information we think will be of interest to you.

So I assume they are selling data somehow to advertisers?

Hi, I'm searching for an indexer that provides almost everything available in remux or even has special releases, like the 1.2TB ProRes version of Apocalypse Now.

Is there an indexer similar to PTP(PassThePopcorn) tracker that meets my requirements?

I've been perusing this community and it seems invite requests make up half or more of the posts. That said, it seems its the best way to get an invite. Anyone have one they could share with me? Thanks!

Seems some of the mods on /r/usenet went on a power trip and deleted any post they didn't agree with. A new sub Reddit was created called /r/UsenetTalk and people are abandoning the old one. In my opinion it is better to just move to Lemmy.

Hey all, it's the time of the year where my subs are running out. Wondering if I should change things up. Right now I have drunkenslug, nzbfinder, geekhub, and nbz.su. Any suggestions on new/better sites?

I am hoping to get a drunken slug invite. I have gaps to fill in my plex server. I am currently using Geek and althub but still have problems with many failed files. If anyone has DS invite it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I've been reading recently that bulknews' SSL certificate expired and people have not been able to connect security. They were able to connect only if they disabled secure connections.

This was a little more than a month ago and, crickets, I see no resolution.

If you are on bulknews, can you tell me if it is up and running for you and on a secure connection?
