I mean, how serious are these surveys? I can see myself answering HTML is an STD as a joke.

And JS is the cure. Obviously.

I got diagnosed with Hyper Transmittable Meat Leprosy 5 years ago... At least I have JavaScript to keep the worst of the symptoms at bay.

Here's the original

https://www.science.org/content/article/one-10-americans-thinks-html-sexually-transmitted-disease

According to the Los Angeles Times, the study questioned more than 2300 adults and was conducted by vouchercloud.net, a coupon website that wanted to know how much tech jargon the public knows.

So probably not that serious

Either it is a multiple-choice that the surveyor fucked up and put STD as an option. Or it is an open question and the "one in 10" is legit.

[–] mrbubblesort@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was a 3 option multiple choice according to the original article

"What is HTML?"

  • A markup language
  • STD
  • I don't know
[–] lauha@lemmy.one 7 points 2 years ago

Probably not a joke but simply people answering multiple choice survey wrong because they don't know. Most likely answer is that most of those people simply have no clue about html instead

[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was done by a coupons website. 12% of the people thought USB was an European country. 18% that blu-ray is an animal. 15% that software is clothing...

There is no way that people were serious.
