... hold on, "players are unable to emote when flying through the air"?
Is that currently possible or is it supposed to be? Either way I have questions.

It used to be possible. They removed the mid-air emote ability in the last patch for some reason

Because emoting gave you gravity damage resistance for some reason and people were surviving crazy heights when emoting
