If he's trying to escape then it's not a play area but a jail.

Unfortunately we live in an apartment, so we can't let him free roam for play time. He usually wants to go back to his cage when he starts acting like this. Chinchilla's are prey animals, and he's quite content to never leave his cage on most days.
