Looking for something that is kind of whiteboardy-pinteresty way of creating idea boards from images, text, links, etc. that isn’t tied to a subscription and I have full control of. Any ideas?

I’m looking for something that is less linear than Obsidian, but I do like Obsidian a lot for other things.

Have you tried the canvas on Obsidian?

I usually use that for mood boarding. Each box acts like a note in itself, so you can add images with texts.

Isn’t obsidian not foss though? Or am I mistaken?

You are correct. The source code for Obsidian is proprietary, but a lotta FOSS-friendly folks give them a pass since it's all plaintext Markdown etc on the backend.
