The founding fathers and those who wrote most of the amendments legitimately didn't think American voters would be as stupid as they are being now, unfortunately.
The caveat being that at the time, American voters consisted almost entirely of landholding white men. I.E. those that thought like they did.
That's not true though. They thought the lower and middle class would ruin the country of allowed to vote. That's why you had requirements to own property and be of certain age and race for most of this countries life.
Some of them thought that and some thought owning land gave a person a more vested interest and made them less susceptible to manipulation.
