...but I often find myself NEEDING TO CHECK EVERY LAST CRATE, BARREL, ETC.

It feels wrong to leave an area when you know there's that one you didn't check--PROBABLY it's just a rotten carrot, but you never know.

Has it ever been worth it? I've just restarted as the Dark Urge having gotten most of the way through Act 1 and I'm skipping so much of that pointless looting now.

Subjective, I guess. I just came upon an area with like a dozen-plus boxes filled with relatively valuable alcohol of all kinds. And I've previously found enchanted boots and a couple of mission items.

I've done a few trips of selling all those silver cups, short swords, leather arnors etc. so that I can buy that extra magic item.
